Saw in the visit thread he is visiting. Legit interest?

Liked his tape. Very active DL, looks to have a motor and athletic.

Another Sheldon Day?

They haven't updated the top of his profile, but 247 has some measurements from a regional Opening, and he measured 6' 3.5" at 292 so he's probably already outgrown the Day profile.

Freebie from 247 with some less than exciting comments from his coach:

“He's a super player,” Campanile said. “He's really looking forward to getting out (to Michigan). He's a pretty special guy. He's kind of the same thing (as Jordan Morant from a recruiting standpoint). It's going to be a Michigan, Alabama, Clemson thing for him. I think that's kind of where it will be. Ohio State will probably be in the mix too. He's a super player. A really good player.”

“He is a dominant player,” 247Sports National Recruiting Analyst Brian Dohn said. “He is long, thick, strong, and athletic. To me he’s a three-tech. He has great explosion, plays with power, and has good technique, especially for a young kid. He has to keep refining it, but at the high school level you can forget running through the middle when he’s in there. You’re going to have to run away from him because if you’re going to run at him, you better double or triple team him. He is one of those kids that just has natural strength and he plays with a low center of gravity.”

“His level of talent is such that he can go to any school in the country, including Clemson/Bama. The talent is unmistakable. Now, he’s just got to continue to develop.”

Michigan is among the nearly 20 programs that have already made Malone a major priority in the 2021 class. Having his head coach’s brother Anthony Campanile on staff, his teammate (Morant) committed, and a Jersey pipeline that has developed over the years are all feathers in the Wolverines’ cap. Another one could turn out to be getting on campus this summer.

“He’s visiting Michigan and Notre Dame, which tells you he might be looking at the academic side more,” Dohn said. “And remember, (Bergen Catholic) plays a ton of Saturday games. So, he’s not going to be making a ton of visits in the fall. I bet you at least half of their games are on Saturdays, and the early-in-the-year Friday night games will probably be in other states. It’ll be tough for him to make a lot of visits in the fall. And they’ll go deep in the playoffs, so he will have very limited chances to visit places in the fall.”

No coach, this isn't about academics.

FWIW, the first quote was from the coach whose brother is on Michigan's staff while giving an interview for the Michigan 247 site, and the second is from a 247 reporter who may or may not know the kid. Malone did make it to campus today so who knows where it goes.

So you're saying there is a chance?

Zero intel on Malone or his leanings. His coach clearly has Michigan ties and could be a factor, but any time a recruit gets to campus, I'll leave room for a bit of hope.

Christian at ISD said that he doesn't believe Coach Campanile is or will "steer" kids towards Michigan.

With that said, I think it's very similar to Don Bosco and ND. There is a natural pull due to familiarity and fit.

When was the last time we landed a kid from Bergen Catholic? They seem to kick the tires and then go elsewhere, unlike some of the other big NJ Catholic schools.

Don Bosco isn't much better - I think Carlo Calabrese and Elijah Shumate.

St. Joseph's Regional - Howard Cross is all I could think of.

St. Peter's Prep is the current pipeline with Wimbush, S. Simon, Ademilola twins. Cody Simon in January.

Wow, at least 2 of those seem a little surprising for a kid with his talent level.

Anyone know what happened here? He just had no interest? You'd think we'd be able to get more traction than we do with the NJ Catholic Prep Schools.
