I think this is a great get, and exactly what Notre Dame needed. Here me out...
- Notre Dame lost Alt and Fisher. I think it's fair to say that the offensive line will take a step back in the 2024 season;
- Notre Dame will likely lose Estime. Love, Price, and Payne are great backs, each with a unique skillset. However, Estime was a damn workhorse that you could rely on;
- At times, Notre Dame needed the QB to make plays with his feet (see Ohio State - 4th and 1; Duke 4th and 16; Clemson - Hartman 26 yard TD run). Whether that was due to the WR's being covered up, the defense stacking the line to stop Estime, GP poor play calling and scheme, the point still stands, that Hartman had to make plays/attempt to make plays with this legs.
Take a look at RL's stats at Duke:
2022
- Passing: 250/392 (63.78%), 2,967 yds, 20tds/6ints
- Rushing: 124 carries, 812 yds (5.6 avg.), 13tds
2023***
- Passing: 95/165 (57.58%), 1,102 yds, 3tds/3ints
- Rushing: 58 carries, 395 yds (6.1 avg), 4tds
***Obviously, 2023 is skewed due to the injury.
Point being, Riley Leonard is a tremendous athlete. He's a little raw at QB as he hasn't played the position too long, but the point stands, he's an unreal athlete. He can make plays both with his arm and legs. Given the well founded "concerns" of GP, the notable offensive departures (Alt, Fisher, Estime, Chris Tyree, etc.) coupled with the general uncertainty of the guys transferring in, this is exactly what Notre Dame needs - a dynamic, dual threat QB.
Lastly, you've got to love his character. Nothing against Hartman at all, but Leonard comes across as a well grounded, team-first player and leader.
