Yeah, Lanning is a really good coach and seems like an elite recruiter. I actually like the guy, but I don't know there just seems to be something missing. I know those Oregon teams have a ton of talent and that is in part why all of the computers seem to love them, but they don't really feel like a program with a lot of talent. They don't seem to overwhelm their opponents and they're not very physically imposing. I get this is sort of an "eye test" subjective thing, but watching them get pushed around by IU definitely colors my perception of them. They got obliterated by OSU in the playoffs last year too.

I'll be interested to see how they look against USC. Even when the ND game was tight with USC, it was pretty clear who the bigger, stronger, and more talented team was. We physically imposed our will in the run game over and over again, and held an explosive offense in check.
Agree but I think they are becoming more physical this year and that trend will continue. Their last 3 classes have some dudes on both lines (26-24 classes). I expect them to continue getting more physical on the lines. This is a unique year where they don't have the elite skill they've typically had especially at WR.

Lea has done more with less and in a tougher conference
How has he done more? He's definitely had less, but he's done way less than Lanning and Oregon.

Oregon went 13-0 last year, beat OSU at home, won the big ten, #1 seed in CFP, but lost to OSU at neutral site. Vandy went 7-6 last year and played in the birmingham bowl.

Oh I disagree stronglyyyyy here. What is Lanning without Phil Knight's wallet?

I don’t get the question it is not really answerable as a HC. He was still the Georgia DC which is pretty good qualification

How many other Vandy coaches have had the success Lea has had? One? Oregon has a history of success

James Franklin went 9 - 4 twice in three years. His first year they made a bowl. Lea has had two 2 win seasons

Neither Chip Kelly or Mario went 13 - 0 in the Pac 10/12.

Coach involvement in recruiting may be less critical for talent acquisition, but it’s more important than ever for talent retention. That’s what makes Freeman so valuable, IMO. His willingness to stay actively involved helps with acquisition, but it’s absolutely essential to keeping players at a discount compared to the money teams are paying to pull a kid from another program.

So we don’t know if Freeman is a good coach because of NDs history either?
I am talking about Lanning and Lea. I think Lea is a better ball coach than Lanning. Lanning is a good recruiter and talent acquirer. If I needed to scheme a win, I would take Lea. What he has done at Vandy> Lanning at Oregon. Truthfully, MF may be the best combo of these two

Gerry DiNardo went 19-25 at Vandy which was good enough to get him the LSU job. After he was fired in year 5 at LSU he was replaced by Nick Saban. The rest is history

I've been around long enough to still read this and laugh,.... and I'm not hating on current Oregon, but I remember when them just making a lone Rose Bowl was a national story bc before that they were hot trash since forever.
