I get the idea that their offenses could score more, but I would have been surprised to see Miami (OL losses) or Ole Miss power rated higher pre-season.

We are third in SP+ preseason. This is with offense being moderately overrated and defense being moderately underrated IMO.

I have a hard time seeing how there are eight teams with better defenses than ours. (though, frankly, we finished 13th in defense SP+ last year and I don't really get that either).

Really good dual threat QB and really good RB. If they get even halfway decent OL play they should be a minimum top 5 offense in the SEC and top 10 in the country while barely throwing the ball.

I also can't see 8 teams better. I think we were something like 3rd or 4th in defense from post-Purdue onward. And then you upgrade DT, CB, and bring everyone else back.

If KVA is healthy you probably have best secondary in the country, best LB duo in the country, and a top 10 DL in the country.

Agree. Chambliss and Lacey are both the absolute real deal. Chambliss can flat out sling the ball all the field very well and is fearless. Pretty incredible that he started on the bench and then nearly took his team to the title game after his head coach left. Golding I feel will do well. Strikes me as a no bs guy who commands respect.

It will be dependent primarily on the offensive line dominating and them staying healthy. We have, arguably, the
best qb in football, strong backs and receivers, a new 5 star tight end. Loaded everywhere. If this oline gives CJ
consistent time to throws and plows big holes regularly for our backs we will roll.

I can provide some analysis….thinking one of the top defenses in the country at the end last season and a defense that returns 12 starters!* is going to what? Implode? Why would they? THEY WERE REALLY GOOD AND NOW THEY ARE EVEN BETTER!

There’s absolutely no reason to believe that this team can’t compete for a title this season. The defense will be a big reason why.

Lucas Carneiro and that's about it, I like Deuce and Horário but our guys have much more potential and are more talented. I like Lacy as well but if you give any of our backs 300+ carries aside from maybe James they can get 1500+ yds

He’s also a big reason why ND got Charlie Partridge to coach the defensive line.

As far as the defense. ND has had very strong defenses without nearly this much talent or experience across the board.

I remember thinking the same thing going into 2012. The starting DL was going to keep us in every game. And the D-line being so good was going to mean that the O-line was battle tested.

The rest would fall into place.

This year, our defensive depth is completely different than any year I can remember. It’s not really close. And it’s not just good players. There are legit studs and lots of guys with edge.

And we legitimately have an All-American-caliber punter finally. Teams are going to have a hard time putting together long drives against this defense, and that’s exactly what they’ll have to do.

Agree.....No doubt a scratch your head start to last year, but Ash made changes and the D started flexing. This is the D's second year in his D and with the amount of talent returning, there's no reason not to have high expectations.

The "slow start" really was one bad performance against A&M and the first half against Purdue. The defense, while looking confused at times, was not all that bad against a Miami team that eventually played in the national championship.
