Yeah, which may or may not be true, but post-spring the word on the street was basically:
  1. Angeli was told "we appreciate everything you've done, but..."
  2. Minchey was very consistent in practice
  3. Carr routinely made throws that Minchey just doesn't make and Carr has top NFL draft pick style upside
So the narrative was "of course the guy with the golden arm is going to win the job"... in many ways, this situation reminds me of the Wimbush era that was short lived. You had a kid with elite athleticism, a cannon for an arm, and a borderline 5-star rating and of course he was going to win the job over the smaller, slower, worse-armed #512 recruit in the country.

Fast forward a couple years and Ian Book is the winningest QB in ND history. And this kind of shit isn't even that uncommon. Stetson Bennett was a zero-star walk on who beat out how many elite recruits? After leaving to go to a JUCO and then transferring back?

If Minchey wins the job, he wins the job. It'll be because the coaches think he gives ND the best chance to win. And his arm is not chopped liver. I think what is freaking people is that every practice report is some version of "Carr made a few great throws sprinkled in between five thousand interceptions." It's not "wow Kenny Minchey is slinging it" or "Kenny Minchey is the second coming of Michael Vick." People don't want a game manager or someone who falls backwards into the starting job because the coaches are scared shitless about their decision making.
I dont disagree with your last paragraph. But, college football is now a true marathon. If they play the game manager early and develop him into more....all the better. If they start him early to allow more reps for Carr with live bullets post game 2....sweet. I just dont see a scenario at this point t where one of the two is so dominant out of the gate the other doesn't get a chance to develop after game 2. Certainly not ideal, but last years offense was more shitty than Skyline out of the gate and the offense grew in time. Im expecting the same this year no matter who is the QB and the offense will be much better at year end than game 1. I want a game manager the first two weeks because the rest of the team is good enough to win the games. After that, I expect more each week.

@IrishLax if we knew in spring what the case would be in August, would we have kept Angeli?

Last one from me, then I will go back to posting gifs and sarcastic comments.

At this point, I hope it is Minchey. If its Carr, and all he has heard is dont turn it over, be safe, and the like, he will more likely than not pucker up in Miami. If you ask a kid to do something he hasn't shown in that environment, its likely not going to end well.

I’ve said this before, but would y’all really care if his last name was something other than “Carr?” Respectfully, it isn’t “Manning.” Nonetheless, if he was “Joe Jerkoff,” you wouldn’t care about this and you would be fucking amped for Minchey.

May the best man win. And with the o-line,STACKED running back room, and pretty damn stout WRs, Minchey and/or Carr will be just fine fellas.

Tbh I think if ND was playing Navy or Purdue Week 1 it would be Carr, but given the schedule I dunno. Minchey is not turning the ball over in practice and is just fine as a passer. Carr has an "NFL" style arm and ceiling and what I was told in the spring was that it wasn't really close in terms of who had more upside. I think what gives everyone pause is the turnovers + Minchey playing consistently well. Freeman is probably more inclined to go with the mistake-free QB and run the ball, I bet the offensive coaches lean more towards the more talented guy.

I think you’re right. If his name wasn’t Carr, this wouldn’t be as controversial.

Not at all for me. I don't care if his last name is Smith. Its about the higher upside. Tough call really. The high upside guy, or the guy turning it over less right now.

Catching up after several hours, not sure if it was mentioned but the sources at another outlet said Minchey also had ints today.

I think it's more that Carr is our highest-rated QB recruit in a decade (going back to Wimbush, per 247's all-time rankings) and, like, he might have scared off Dante Moore. People want to see him cook. I think that matters a lot more than his grandfather coaching at Michigan 25 years ago.

Kenny had better weekend. Talked how doesn’t get rattled. Even-keeled. Carr was up and down.

Ash is going to be fine. He’s not going to step so far out of what MFMF wants to do where it can go off the rails. Same as Al—who people weren’t excited about—when he first started.
This. Veteran coach that is a stickler for fundamentals with elite talent at virtually every position. He may not be exactly like Golden, but it'll be close.

Snap-board is going to lose it. Heck-I may need a break after the investment I've put into this team since last season ended!!

Onye seems to be the real revelation outta Freeman's pc. If his play this season matches his camp performance to date, this D may very well have found a way to level up.

He was quietly having a really good season when he stepped away last year. Optimistic the young fella puts it all together and empties the clip for his contract year. Rooting hard for him.
