was watching yesterday's podcast from irish illustrated this morning on you tube before going to work and while talking about how bad this team is JB and the two Tims all agreed that they think our head coach will be back for a 4th year
I'm incredibly frustrated as well with the state of the program.
Especially when it seems like every Big Ten school in our geographical area has been able to navigate the new world of NIL.
Michigan thriving
Michigan State continuing to be a top 15 program
Purdue experiencing the best five year run in program history
Illinois one of the best programs in the country this decade
Wisconsin continuing to be a single digit seed tournament team throughout this current decade
Indiana coming back to some national relevance, after a terrible head coaching hire
Nebraska on the verge of getting thier first ever tournament program win
All of these programs listed above play in front of packed houses every home game, and have real excitement and continued hope toward the future right now.
We on the other hand play our home games in front of a barely half full arena, and a joke of a student section.
I don't blame the students for the apathy they feel toward the program, just an observation of how sad things have gotten for a program that once had a feared home court advantage in the prime Brey years.
I will say, to coach Shrews credit it has been way worse in recent memory. (See Ken Pom's yearly rankings this decade below)
It is easy to forget how bad things got at the very end of the Brey era.
Currently: 87th
2025: 98th
2024: 118th
2023: 166th
2022: 38th
2021: 83rd
2020: 57th
If you could promise me Burton, Certa, Haralson, Braeden, Frost and Sundra all returned next year, then I'd be on board giving him one final shot at making the tournament and getting this program on the right track, but I wouldn't blame any of those guys if they wanted to chase the money and a more likely tournament bid form a Big Ten, Big 12, or SEC bigger program and put thier names in the portal this offseason.
It's hard to believe a top coaching candidate like Josh Schertz would want the job with the current state of our program right now, and the ACC conference as a whole.
I would love to be wrong about that though if they do decide three years is enough of the Coach Shrews experience.
