In the NIL age, it seems like a new lesson is emerging: you cannot fire assistant coaches unless you already know their replacement. The time gap between the old coach and the new is deadly when players can transfer without restriction. Even if there is a plan, if it takes too long to become public, you're in trouble.

The TP window is tough all around in its timing. You have what you said here; also, if you're a perennial CFP contender, no one really leaves until you get beat or win it all (which can go into January) and then suddenly, you get an exodus of players and maybe have already missed out on a number of portal entrants for backfilling. HS recruits have been signing up pretty immediately since new 12/20 early signing day, but I wonder if moving fwd, some savvy players who are fairly coveted, wait until February signing day where at that point, some top teams could be hungry for players after getting decimated in the portal period.

Got it. Thought it was a fever dream. I’m going back bed. Wake me up when we start talking about the direction of the s&c program…..
Surprised Gruden hasn't been mentioned for S&C coach..I thought it was a ND mandate that the Saviors name be mentioned for any ND coaching opening, irrespective of position...

Could hire his kid the Duece Gruden. He was a S&C coach in the NFL

I was trying to be funny, but had no idea about his kid. Contact his kid for S&C interview and bring his dad for OC lol

Alternatively, don't fire your assistant the day after you do a press conference talking about the importance of staff continuity unless you find out he's a cannibal

I think it mostly reflects poorly on the players who choose to transfer in that window. What's the rush? It's never smart to make emotional decisions. Also shows that they don't value the ND experience

Agreed, though I'll say that this only really reflects poorly on Rico.

I don't think James and Merriweather's choice to hit the portal had much to do with Stuckey being let go. Seems more like they knew they were stuck behind freshmen and took this opportunity to go elsewhere and try and get a fresh start.

But Rico has zero excuse to rush this decision. You play a ton, as a true freshmen, and have an opportunity to start, get an elite education and bank some good NIL opportunities. What's bizarre to me is that he wouldn't at least be willing to wait until the new guy is named and see if he meshes with him. Short-sighted doesn't begin to describe this.

Maybe it's been mentioned before, but Mike Brown (Wisconsin) coached up several Cincinnati Bearcats players like Alec Pierce (2nd rd in '22), Tre Tucker (3rd rd in '23) and Tyler Scott (4th rd in '23).

Will Pauling (who came from Cincinnati with Brown) has been the Badgers top wideout this season.

It seems like he can develop players.

Maybe it was the presser that set something off. A realization that this offense wasn’t going to change or maybe Chansi and the WR room was the scapegoat and they were thrown onto the sword. The firing just seemed so out of left field.

This would be another bad hire by hiring a friend. Go get a really good WR coach.

What do you really know about Mike Brown that makes you say that, other than who he is not? Genuine question, I dont know much about him so am wondering.

I think the "Wisconsin" label is hurting Mike Brown's reputation on IE. Badgers QB sucked balls in the one year he was there.

Convincing CJ Williams (borderline 5 star) to go from Cali to WI shouldn't be overlooked.

I think if it was mike brown we'd know probably by now. It's just an assumption but I am thinking they are waiting on shepherd who probably wants to wait til after the pac 12 championship to make a decision

I don't know if Mike Brown is a great coach or not, but he's not doing much recruiting wise at the WR spot. 1 WR in the 24 class, none in the 25 class yet.

Wisconsin isn't a hot bed for recruiting WRs, but either was Ohio State until they got great offensive recruiters that focused on the WR position.

So lets say he hires Hartline as a wr coach/co-oc, what narrative are we supposed to follow?
Are we happy cause he brought in a great receivers coach or are we mad because he hired a buddy?
I would be happy with Hartline compared to Parker. He would bring in good WR’s and perhaps get some guys to stay. I’d prefer someone with play calling experience that has done a good job. I’d be optimistic about Hartline calling plays since he could probably scheme ways for the WR’s to get open.

They're buddies how? Did they play together because they haven't coached together.

Does Hartline have any sort of play calling experience? This is a serious question. I'm too lazy at the moment to google search his past lol

There a single program who's had OFFENSIVE success at the highest level with co-ocs?

Not doubting but have no idea.

I think a few here are going to be mad that we have a great receivers coach.
