Its not that Angeli/Minchey would beat him out so much that if one of them transfers after spring ball and Leonard gets hurt, we’re kind of up the creek for depth.

That said, we need a QB with a high-ceiling. In 2024, Leonard is it. You take him every time and try to talk QB3 into sticking around through the season instead of bailing to (probably) back up somewhere else.

I just don't see why Minchey would leave.

He's probably the favorite to get the starting job next year, and I'm not sure he's going to be guaranteed the starting QB position at any P5 school if he leaves after the spring. No matter where he goes, he'll have to compete.

Angeli? Seems far more likely, but again, he'd most likely have to win the job wherever he goes unless he wants to go the G5 route.

Sure, you could. However, with the talent coming back and our easy schedule, we’d throw away and waste a potential great season / run.

That would suck balls.

If Minchey can’t beat out Angeli for the #2 spot, he should transfer. Plain and simple.

Except, as Katz said, no one has ever seen Minchey play college football. He’s not going to start anywhere in 2024, so why not stick another year at ND and see what breaks. (Hopefully not Leonard’s ankle). He still has a lot of upside here.

Angeli, otoh, has enough experience that he could transfer out and plausibly compete for a starting job at a lower P5 or a G5. I don’t think he should leave either (and I hope he doesn’t) but if he’s not QB2 coming out of camp, he’s probably not going to be once Minchey and Carr get more established. So maybe it makes sense to go somewhere he’s more likely to play.

Maybe. Or maybe with more time/development under their belts, Minchey and Carr eventually overtake Angeli, and they should be patient and bet on their superior potential.

I tend to think (OK, hope) that Angeli's utility to the program is peaking this offseason. With an injury-prone QB1, we need a QB2 who has seen some action and proven himself competent. Steve is the only one we've got. But just because he's QB2 on September 1 doesn't mean he will be on December 1, or that that means anything at all about 2025.

Obviously the last 15 years of Notre Dame Football is littered with talented QBs who didn't reach their potential - while three-stars Book and Rees led us to undefeated seasons - but you've got to hope that one of Minchey/Carr/perhaps Knight hits, or what are we even doing here?

Yeah I think Minchey/Carr are competing with each other more so than Angeli from a long term view. In 2025 2 of the 3 will probably see a pathway to PT, but not likely all 3.

That's why I keep mentioning that what's between the ears is more important than the physical tools. Obviously you want both, but finding those guys is something of a crap shoot as evident by our history.

Carr is a Freshman. He’s got more time. I also don’t think Carr is coming to Notre Dame to not play. Again, if Minchey can’t separate himself from Angeli, then maybe he should look elsewhere. Angeli is “limited” in terms of his physical tools. Total “game manager” style QB. Conversely, Carr supposedly has an elite arm and physical tools. You don’t want to hang around and then find yourself behind both Angeli and Carr in 2025.

You do not. (If you are Minchey) But you can hang around through 2024 and see what develops.

If, in December, you’re still behind Angeli and Carr’s looking to jump ahead too, then, yes, go elsewhere and try to win a starting job in spring ball. He’ll still have three years on the clock.

But leaving after this spring doesn’t make much sense. With so little game experience and not even spring ball to learn a new system, Minchey’s not going to start anywhere worth playing in 2024. (Angeli might have a shot at starting if he dropped down a level or two.). So unless Minchey feels Notre Dame is hindering his development somehow, or he just doesn’t like it here, he’s probably better off staying through the season.

All true, but with Denbrock as our new OC, everyone is on a clean slate, learning a new offense, playbook, and scheme. Everyone is on level footing. We've got a stout room (Leonard is your Senior-starter, Carr is your highly touted freshman.) You're sandwiched in between the two. Getting limited reps and running the scout team's offense isn't helping him. Carr is highly recruited and is going to want his reps, too. Time is valuable and transferring has never been easier. I stand by it. If Minchey can't surpass Angeli, it wouldn't surprise me if he looked elsewhere.

If Angeli is here he's almost a lock to be the backup in 24 if Leonard is starter. The question really that no one knows, is do the coaches see angeli as what they want in a potential starter in 2025? So far the answer seems to be no since they got leonard for 2025.

If you believe carr and or minchey can be the starter in 2025 you'd like to get them a few real reps in 2024. imo. How the coaches do that could be interesting.

Unsure your making sense. If the coaches don't feel Angeli is a viable 2025 starter and they want to give reps to Minchey/Carr, why would Angeli be a lock as the backup?

Or are you just saying if Angeli, this. If not, then that?

Because Angeli has started and played in a big game now away from home.

If i'm the coach, i feel really good about having leonard starting and angeli as backup going into college station next year. Minchey and obviously carr haven't had any meaningful college reps. I wouldn't want there first ones to potentially be at college station if leonard were to miss time in the game.

With that said, I also could see where the coaches believe minchey and carr have more tools for what they want to do offensively going forward over Angeli. Northern Illinois and Miami (OH) would be a great opportunity to get minchey or carr some real game reps looking to 2025.
