I actually have more concerns at left guard then at RT. At right tackle I would love to see Wagner start with Lambert getting a rep every few plays, I feel like they will complement each other very well and we are likely to only have Lambert for three years so we have to get him reps early.
At Left Guard, I'm interested to see if Roco can win the job over Coogan. Coogan is a smart player and isn't going to make a lot of mistakes but he simply isn't as talented as Roco. We need Roco to have a good off-season, improve his footwork and win this job. I think this battle is the most important on this Oline.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves? The kid's been on campus for like 10 minutes. Also he seriously entertained the prospect of going to Harvard instead of Notre Dame, so I'd wager he'll want to get his degree. That aside, yes, reps early please. Soon as he can legitimately get on the field.

I want Rocco to win the guard selfishly because I trust his 330 lbs should be able to move people in the run game. But we can't afford a liability in pass protection.

Right tackle: Wagner is the best possible outcome, it means he surged ahead of Baker, who is a great backup but hasn't seized the job in 4 years. Wagner probably isn't moving people in the run game but have Billy next to him should allow for some excellent combo blocks.

Please dear God, let the 5 starters become 1 unit quickly and give them health all season. Such a critical unit for our success. That and our young LB corps quickly assimilating and doing their job+ instead of cutting someone loose 2-3x/game.

Anyone else have early rumblings?

If he's that smart and he's given a round 1 grade after 3 years, he'd be foolish to stay. I'm not saying it'll play out that way but he can finish his degree in 3 years or over the summer or post-NFL career.

But it'd be great if he was a 4 year guy before cashing NFL checks.

Jagusah winning the job would not surprise me at all.

I've always wanted to see Rocco play because I feel he is a fan favorite.

The more I've heard about Leonard the more excited I am to see him play, last season we saw more of Hartman before he took his first snap.

I believe I read on ISD that Hartman was great for the program however he still like to do his own thing. They say Leonard is the exact same as Hartman except he wants to be around the guys all the time.

To be fair Hartman was like eight years older than his wide receivers. Maybe he didn’t just want to go out for milkshakes anymore.

Fall camp kicks off this week. I can’t wait for actual football discussion.

Any big predictions for fall camp? Any freshmen (besides kva) you think come out with a real shot at playing time? Any position that you think will be deemed a weak spot?

I think Micah Gilbert will be too good to keep off the field for long. I think left guard is going to be a continued problem

Carr will solidify himself as next in line to start at QB should Leonard go down.

Corner is thin af. Interested to see if Hobbs or Moore will pass Chance Tucker and earn some snaps.

Aneyas Williams and kedren young probably aren't 5 year guys (and if they are I'd bet the 5th year would be elsewhere so in other words who cares) so I'd imagine they'll both get some touches. Deland likes to use several guys.

I think Gilbert is basically expected to contribute this year. What a coup to land him.

Could see lambert being among the top 8 lineman on the team or so from the jump. Feel like they'll still try to keep him off the field unless upperclassmen struggle first.

Bryce Young has unreal physical talent and is not a 5 year guy. Watching him vs army and navy should hopefully just be hilarious this year. Sevillano fills a body role we don't have and could get snaps just bc of that.

Interested if either rezac/kahoun/urlacher get more than 4 games on ST.

You just want to root for him because his name is Rocco. ;)

With Payne out, i'm curious to see if Aneyas or Young can jump over Ford and be our 3rd string back.

WR is the most interesting one. We have depth to handle injuries, but does anyone step up to be a college stud. I think Collins could have a good year (not 1k receiver) but maybe a 7-800 yd season and lead us in yards. I think Gilbert gets real reps if Thomas has injury issues again.

I could see bryce young on some 3rd and long pass rush situations.

I’m sure the Morrison question will get asked but probably won’t get a straight answer.
They have been maintaining he will be ready by middle of fall camp.
I think they are purposely resting certain players, like Mills & Cross in the spring. Neither of those guys need a 6th spring, & it saves them a lot of wear & tear going into the season. It’s a big selling point to get kids to skip the draft & come back. Tell them they can skip spring and rest.
With Morrison, he doesn’t need the first two weeks of drills. He just needs the 3rd week of team & the fourth week of A&M prep.

Honestly how much can A&M glean from open practices? Does knowing who makes a play here and there really give them an edge?

Could have gleaned that Tobias wasn't very good and Faison was by watching open practices last year.

I think it's actually two things I wouldn't want the media to publish on college kids

1. Injury or issue speculation without having facts
2. Someone performing really good or bad in one practice and all the reporters talking about it. I wouldn't want reporters opinions influencing development when it seems good or bad.

Why would reporters' opinions based off of one practice actually influence a player's development? The coaches see these guys every single day. They know what they do/don't have in a Tobias or a Faison. Why would they care what ISD writes for public consumption?

The program can do whatever it wants w/regard to open practice but the idea that it gives our opponents some big competitive advantage feels way overblown. Pro teams hold open practices all the time, especially in preseason.

I actually think this year does matter some.
New offensive coordinator, with new QB, new WRs & new OL.
I think ND wants their offense to be a surprise for Elko.
Denbrock & scheme around OT trouble, but if the opponent knows how, that changes things.
For example, let’s say Denbrock decides the best way to protect his OTs is screens, draws & QB draws. Those can be devastating to rush ends who over commit. But it has to be a surprise.
I just made that example up, but the point is, Denbrock can do a lot to protect his OL if he needs to, but it can’t be obvious.

I think Schrauth, Craig and Rocco will be good run blockers on the interior which actually sets up well for QB draws.

ND has had trouble converting 3rd and short for as long as I can remember and it absolutely drives me nuts. Hopefully Leonard can fix that and consistently keep the chains moving. Especially with the amount that MF goes for it on 4th down, it would be great to have a money option to pick up short yardage.

I think Leonard will be the first option this year for must-get short yardage.
He is very dynamic and actually healthy now. He was never healthy the last year & a half at Duke because they kept trotting him out with an injury. Everyone here saw his ankle against ND. Duke never should have sent him back out that season.

I’m pretty excited to see the offense this year. Will they make a big step forward with Denbrock and Leonard? Maybe, but the pieces are definitely there.

Because if 20 reporters tweet and post about someone doing terrible, and they don't think they will make an impact, play, or start, that gets to the player and can impact how they continue their development. Meaning, they can get down on themselves, question being at ND, who knows.

On the flipside, someone could have looked awesome to the media eyes but maybe not as good to the coaches eyes. Media hypes that person up like they're going to be amazing, then they end up not starting.

High school practices aren't even open to the public, generally speaking. At least mine weren't. I don't understand the consternation of not having open media availability. Obviously, we want to consume as much informational content as possible, but to act like we don't understand why Freeman and Co. don't want open practices is a head scratcher to me.

This exactly! I was going to say the same thing. Elko is a great defensive guy. Our O is an unknown to him. It needs to stay that way.
