And Brennan Armstrong once had a good season. I’m not going after a guy that had a good season, two seasons ago.
There won't be a perfect transfer available. Who do you like more than Leonard? Maybe Pratt, but he's completely untested at this level. At least Leonard played in the ACC, which has real defenses (unlike the PAC-12)

It mostly comes down to getting our OC/qb coach right, someone who can coach it up good. Minchey, Angelli, Carr all have a lot of talent.

Regardless who it is I think this year showed you have to have good coaching and supporting cast. So not only do we need to find a highly capable QB, we need a competent OC and some wr help.

My guess is that Parker is back next year. If not, that means ND dropped another inexcusable game to a far inferior opponent which is very Weisian. That said, I think ND’s offensive woes (in my opinion) rank as follows:

1. WR
2. OC
3. QB
4. OL

Trying to envision a bunch of middle-aged dudes with laptops scattered all over the country executing a riot outside the Gug.

Which version of Riley Leonard would ND be getting? At least with Cam, he’s had back to back seasons of plus QB play.

Both are a gamble.
They're all gambles. If they weren't they'd be going to the draft. Of all the potential GT QBs out there for us my first choice might be Will Howard, who A: Is healthy and B: Has played and won a lot of games against P5 competition. But of course you'd say the same about Hartman and here we are. It's a bit of a crapshoot, but so is going into next season with a QB who has never started a game.

To approach the conversation by saying we won’t find a perfect QB in the portal seems a little disingenuous. I think everybody understands this and nobody has that expectation.

There is a massive difference between perfection and what Leonard has done this season throwing the football. His numbers are not average. They are absolutely terrible when he plays good competition.

I want no part of a QB that was good, two seasons ago.

Who do I want? No idea, good news for me and the staff is that decision doesn’t need to be made today. However, what I do know is I’d rather give Angeli, Minchey, or Carr a chance to develop if that’s all we can get.

For those ripping on Hartman, Hartman has made plays happen against Duke, Clemson. I would agree that he hasn't looked his best the past few games- inconsistent offensive line play hasn't helped and our WR problems haven't helped. When he throws a pick it seems to throw him off the rest of the game.

Go get a new OC and let Angeli and Minchey battle it out to start vs A&M.
Buchner also made plays happen when he was here.

Problem is that he and Hartman aren't making enough plays to make up for the bad plays they make.

Hartman may have made a few good plays, but it doesn't make up for 13/30 with 2 picks.

I think you have to look past the stats- Leonard has the physical tools to be a day 1-2 draft pick, which can't be said of most graduate transfer candidates (I will say it feels a bit dirty speculating that a starter from a Power 5 program might transfer)

He didn't have good passing stats, but he had some big run plays against Clemson to help win that game. And the only other good defense he's played this year while healthy was ND. He had pressure in his face all game long- there are very few QBs who would have succeeded under that much duress.

We're in the QB transfer thread, Freeman has already said we're taking a transfer, and the season is pretty meaningless at this point- might as well partake in some speculation on who we'll get

No problems with the speculation just the narrative that since we can’t get perfect we should settle for Leonard.

Also, saying he didn’t have good stats is a massive understatement. His stats are absolutely terrible. Brandon Wimbush was benched on a 10 win Notre Dame team for stats like those.

Agree to disagree. I think we're on opposite ends of the spectrum on this one. I think Leonard is the best guy that ND could get this offseason, and I don't think he'll be that interested

My opinion doesn’t matter as they’re going to probably spend big on a QB. But honestly I’d prefer they get a serviceable GT at QB and spend Hartman type money on some wideouts. What good is spending money on a QB if he has no weapons

Maybe this is dumb, but I think our WR situation will look much better next year even without transfers. I think the freshmen will take a big jump, KK Smith apparently has been looking great, hopefully Jayden Thomas will be healthy and be a steady #1, and Cam should be able to contribute early

We have a solid 4 if Greathouse, Rico, Thomas, and the lacrosse kid all stay healthy.
If 5 commits himself, James is anything, and Cam can contribute then gravy.

I agree with you that it SHOULD but even in perfect health is Jayden Thomas a guy that should be a true #1? Idk, I’m just pretty jaded by their performance this year

Forgot about Braylon James. I'm even more excited for KK- I think he can have an effect similar to Stepherson

I agree Thomas will never be a top NFL talent but I think he can lead the team in receptions, especially on 3rd down

You’re right but he was playing through a high ankle sprain post-ND. I have reservations but I think he’s worth a look if better options fall through.

Yeah I think it depends on who leaves. We have plenty of bodies now, and like we’ve discussed previously, it’s hard to attract quality WRs in the portal
Assuming good health we’re OK with numbers but that’s a big assumption, and also assumes no outbound transfers. Agree we’re not likely to get an WR1 in the portal, for Notre Dame reasons, but a big-bodied GT who can be a credible starter would be good insurance against Colzie/Tobias continuing to be nonfactors.
