I would actually love to hear/read what Rees's ideal offense would be. A lot of people think he is auditioning for the NFL and wants to run an "NFL offense" but what does that really mean? You can't actually run and NFL offense, because it's not the NFL.

This is the ideal offense. This formation from this school. Not one TE less.

2020 Brennan Armstrong wasn't anything amazing either, so IDK.

Apparently Virginia did have to replace all five OL this year.
Losing their OC really hurt them too. He went to Syracuse and Schrader got way better (at least until he got hurt). Armstrong got way worse.

No idea if Tommy R can fix him or not.

Seriously. He just absolutely slings it. So many on time, tight window throws.

This year he looked like Nate Montana mixed with Everette Golson. Just two completely different players. And I get that his OL was trash and the offensive scheme was horrible but it was also just accuracy and arm strength problems.
Agreed. He was also the team's leading rusher. Their top rb had 365 yards rushing on the season, for context, so the kid wasn't getting any help.
On the other hand, his Pitt game late in the year should give everyone pause.

I've watched all the Card tape I can and I really don't see the Buchner comparisons at all. He's a 69.4% passer and tosses the ball effortlessly over 50 yards. He puts great touch on deep balls and wheel routes. When did we ever see Buchner put touch on a pass?
As shocking as it was at the time, I’d say the answer to your question was that first TD to Austin in the VT game (see YouTube clip)

Then he went on to make some youthful mistakes…similar to this year. Overall, I don’t think we’ve seen enough to conclusively say he’s not good enough to be the starter. The OL was trash those first two games this season so it’d be nice to see what he could’ve done w/ the OL play we saw in games 3-12.

I’m less worried about TB’s ability than his availability due to injury. He misses a year of high school ball from a torn ACL. He misses another complete season due to COVID (not his fault but it did stunt his growth iMO). He gets banged up in 2021 and isn’t available for the Wisc game. He injures his ankle walking down some steps and can’t play the Spring Game. FInally ,he separates his non-throwing shoulder this season. That seems to be a trend.

Buchner could medical redshirt this year leaving him with four years of eligibility left?

Card is my current preference for two reasons:
1. It allows Buchner to develop without the world on his shoulders. Build the body and mind to take over for a two year stint himself.
2. It bridges to the incoming studs without having them be forced into action right off the bat.

Card being pretty darn good doesn't hurt either. I think of all the easy passes Pyne missed and the open guys he just couldn't see. There were thousands of yards left on the field this year.

Three years. If this year counts as a medical, and even if it doesn't for whatever reason, him playing in less than four games grants him a redshirt. He would be redshirt-sophomore next season.

What are the chances Buchner plays in the bowl game? Would be nice to see him behind a much improved line.

What an absolute massive kick in the nuts to Drew Pyne that would be.
Oh, I don’t think it will happen. I would just like to see it to get a glimpse of those guys. I’ve seen enough Pyne this year to know what we have with him. I hope we see a lot of the other younger guys as well.

Edit: Your post got me thinking. Why would it be a kick in the balls for Pyne? Is he owed the starting job now? Is that more important than the coaching staff seeing what they have with other quarterbacks? The truth is he’s only starting because of injuries and poor recruiting.

My daughter is on scholarship playing soccer. Although she started 80% of the games this year I would never think she’s owed that. The only thing she is owed is the scholarship she was promised for this year. One of the girls in her class is from England and the coach just cut her scholarship in half for next year. He didn’t think she was playing up to the level she needed to be. She probably won’t stick around as it will be too costly. Other girls got money cut as well. This goes on with all the programs and this is D2 women’s soccer.

College sports is cut throat and not just at the big football schools. It’s produce or go home.

It seems unlikely Buchner will be recovered enough to play based on the Irish Illustrated pod this week.

It doesn’t get any more game manager than that.
Not that it's going to happen, but...

Why? Pyne served his purpose - he got the team through the regular season as 2022's backup QB. Since this bowl game is mostly inconsequential, it should be about preparing for next season. Pyne has no place on next year's squad. If he's 2023's QB2, we have failed.

1. I think it’s time to roll the dice on a multi-year starter which is why I lean Card. Albeit it was only 108 throws, Card’s Yards Per Attempt (YPA) was 8.59 and he still completed 69.5% of his passes.

For comparison, Buchner was 7.56/56%. Leary was 6.55/61% and Armstrong was 6.52/54.6%.

2. Armstrong had one good year sandwiched by two crap years so which version of him do you get?

3. Leary had a good year last year but his play fell off this year plus his injury. Is his injury a one time thing or the start of something worse? He’s also a pure pocket passer. He ran for -79 yards his good season.

It’s a roll of the dice no matter who you pick but I lean the more accurate passer that I can squeeze two years out of to be the bridge to Minchey/Carr.

Because it is. Lol. It’s one thing to have Pyne split time with someone but to not him have involved is absurd.

Yes I know college sports are cut throat, it doesn’t mean everyone has to be. Sometimes you just have to do the right thing. Is it his team next year? No. But it’s his team this year.

This is the conundrum with the non playoff bowl games. Are they a capstone of this season? A launching point for next season? Can they be both?

Obviously, you want to win the game and have that positive feeling carry you into the off-season. But, at the same time losing, but getting experience for younger guys and seeing what they are capable of, might be just as or more beneficial for next year's season as a win.

There’s absolutely no reason in looking forward what, 7 months till next season? Play the best guys(which will be probably Pyne) and maybe some packages for Buchner. Play to win.

is this just for the QB position or would you feel the same if Liufau was replaced by one of the younger linebackers? Not trying to argumentative, just curious on your perspective, even if I don’t currently agree.

I can agree with that perspective. Whatever it takes to win.

I was speaking to the marriage of Cade McNamara and Iowa’s offense.

They are glorified spring games. The best players don’t play. So the practice time and game both should be run with an eye to towards the future.

Pyne is going to play because there is no one else (if Angeli was at all an option he would’ve played by now) but I think we also will see a lot more Kollie, Sneed, Merriweather, etc.
