If we have any hope of being competitive next year, we need to hit the open market very hard with the selling point that you are our guy to start and we want you to win the job. Then if Buchner miraculously beats out a seasoned QB who can actual throw the ball just live with the results there, but I don't think he does if we bring in an actual QB transfer that can accurately throw the ball downfield.
I can’t handle watching Buchner for a full season. You know he’s going to get hurt again, he’s not built for D1 football.

1. Hire Garrett Riley as OC.
2. Get him to bring Max Duggan with him.
That would be better than signing the #1 Class. That immediately makes ND a playoff team. The trickle down impact of QB play can’t be understated. Look what happened to Iowa vs OSU. They gave up 52 points, but their D didn’t play badly at all. There’s only so much a Defense can do when the opposing Offense starts in plus territory.

Yep. Defense doesn’t win championships anymore. The rule set and the way games are officiated favor the offenses so much that you need to be able to put up 42 points in your sleep to compete for championships.

Unless your UGA from last yr and have 7-8 1st round picks on your Defense AND the other team’s best WR blows out his knee in the title game… then Defense wins titles

Ha true. For some reason I’m not sure the strategy of “sign 9 five stars every year” will work at ND though.

And even then, you have to hope your opponent’s best WR tears his ACL. Anyway, I hate both teams, but cringe any time someone mentions how Stetson Bennet “won” a title. He didn’t win anything, he just didn’t lose the game.

I remember I mentioned that Tyler Buchner was injury prone to a certain Notre Dame analyst and he freaked on me claiming he was never hurt in high school. And he was wrong because Tyler was hurt in his sophomore year of high school.

To think these two noobs in Freeman and Rees looked at the QB room and decided they didn’t need to take a transfer for this year is incredible just incredible. Complete stupidity

They were looking at Slovis, but he’s been bad this yr. What really sucks is they were looking at the WR from Iowa and that kid’s been killing it at Purdue.

Pete Sampson mentioned Brennan Armstrong as someone ND should potentially look at this offseason on the Irish Illustrated podcast today. FWIW

Armstrong is a stud and it makes sense that he would use another year in college at another program to boost his NFL stock because Virginia has been a disaster to this point and his numbers have nose dived.

If he did enter the portal he would have his pick of landing spots. I don't know offhand who else would be gunning for him but I wish ND had a better situation to sell him. At least the OL should be attractive.

He’s been awful this year. Pretty surprising because he balled out last year.

What Tony Elliot does to a MF. Change of scenery would be insanely beneficial IMO. He has the skill set of a Tyler Buchner + 3 years of starting experience.

I assume many programs attempted to get Armstrong last year. Kid bet on his team once already. Just like Zay Flowers. Not working out great. Price of loyalty in the portal era.

Viriginia lost all five starters from their 2021 OL and are ranked 100-and-something in sacks allowed. I haven't watched a game of theirs all season but I'm optimistic that Armstrong didn't turn into a pumpkin overnight.
I don’t think so either. Just find it wild that he went from a top 15ish QB to worse stats than Drew Pyne.

Freemans job status should revolve around getting a 23 quarterback. watching DP for another year sounds worse than having my face mauled by a chimpanzee. I think he needs a ‘23 4 star at minimum and a grad transfer that is the intended starter as well.

You don't think TB would be ahead of DP?

What’s wrong with our “situation” that a good QB wouldn’t fix?
Good O Line, stable of RBs, a bunch of WRs who will be young but talented, probably a new OC. And a defense good enough to help you win a lot of games.
We may not write a huge upfront NIL check or run a video game offense but for a grad transfer QB who wants to play on a big stage and up his draft stock we’d have plenty to offer.

A good but not great QB has us 5-1 and quite possibly 6-0.

Am real curious who MF has on his OC shortlist.

If Kurtis Rourke is on the market, he is someone ND should take a serious look at. He's been crushing it at Ohio and pushing for the MAC championship this year.

Most think his play has been adversely affected by a change in OC. Robert Anae, who is doing a great job at Syracuse this season; was his OC last year. I think the QB Coach went to SU as well.
