Haven't read the article, but on the pod, they made it sound like it was the Marshall loss that made them realize they need a different approach when they realized Marshall had a billion transfers.

And USC.

Four wins in a row against SC. All it took for that streak to end was 20+ transfers, a dozen missed holding calls and half a dozen scrambles by an OU transfer at QB.

I know it's a dead horse, but I think Swarbrick and Freeman can paint this as adapt or die and it's barely hyperbole. Every other top 15 team will get better via the portal, every year. If you aren't taking undergrads, you aren't getting better. If you aren't getting better, you're getting worse.

My suspicion is that the changes to the transfer process are with regards to the speed of processing potential transfers rather than the academic standing of the transfers.

Meaning, if someone couldn't qualify before... he still wont. Its just that admissions wont sit on the file for 3 months before telling him that he cant get in.

I think it'll be both. Speed to review these xfers will improve, but also the restrictions will loosen. Irish Illustrated pointed out the fact that the Olympic sports have been getting in xfers without issue for years.
Why this is a point of contention for football, the golden goose is tantamount to self sabotage.

I've already said it, but I can't stress enough how screwed Notre Dame is when Marcus Freeman leaves if they don't fix their transfer stance. It's going to take *years* to get the program competitive again when they lose players and an entire recruiting class and they aren't allowed to patch the holes with transfers.

there was scuttlebutt last year ND was trying to turn Josh Downs' head to get him to transfer from UNC. There needs to be more of this aggressive style of shadow recruiting this offseason IMO

He won't unless ND (or the NCAA) makes major changes to their NIL & transfer stance. Even If he's successful (10-11 wins a year), he'll do exactly what Kelly did and leave for somewhere where its easier to win big. If he isn't successful he'll be fired. This isn't a short-term problem for ND.

This doesn’t get enough attention. ND already lets plenty of athletes in that wouldn’t normally qualify. Just not for football.

I hope you're right but if he has the kind of success that his early recruiting returns suggests he may have, pOSU will be taking note of it if/when Ryan Day moves on....

I hope so too! And I’m not saying he’s leaving anything soon. But whether it’s next year or 50 years from now when he dies on the sidelines after winning his 50th straight national title, he will leave and Notre Dame will be screwed for a number of seasons if they don’t fix their transfer policy.

I think Freeman is a very grateful person. As long as the University tries to improve things he’ll be here for a long time. Kelly cared for ND because he was being paid to care for ND. You can tell Freeman actually cares for ND with actions and his words.

Do I think we’ll ever lead the way for NIL or transfers nope. But I think the football program will open the doors for all sports to improve in these areas.

Kelly got the field conditions he wanted, the new football facility and I am sure there is many other things I am forgetting or don’t know about. If they were willing to do that for him wait till Freeman shows what he can do.

Per 247, he had an offer from Northwestern. He was a EE in 2020 so he should (key word) have his degree in a few weeks or by the spring.

I think ND should identify a short-list of candidates that they believe can elevate the offense. Maybe 3-4 guys. And go from there. They shouldn't risk out not getting anyone that fits because they are too hesitant to go after someone right away, in case a better QB becomes available.

Pretty sure he would be a grad transfer, but Hudson Card would absolutely qualify academically. Guy takes school very seriously. I posted a couple pages back but he was academic all-state in high school and has been all academic Big 12 every semester he's been at Texas. If ND can't look past a couple pre-requisites that he could easily complete once at ND, then there's major problems.
