No. That’s why I’m posting as Blueclaw on Irish Envy. 2022 linebacker play was not good. Happy to be wrong, but fearful of swiss cheese linebacker play.
It's always good in the off season. We'll know by end of September. Everyone's happy with every player until it's show time.

None of our LBs would have started for Michigan, OSU, Ga, Bama, Etc. Maybe they're making a gigantic leap in 2023, it's possible, but they were not good last year. Being assignment sounds =/ good.

He has the highest tackling efficiency on the team.
And the games he missed for injury or targeting were ND’s statistically worse tackling performances.
He also sets the Defense.
It’s crazy that Clark Lea, Marcus Freeman & Al Golden all talk about how good he is a give media members shocked face looks when people question Bertrand…but fans think he stinks.
Bertrand is good. Prister, Sampson, O’Malley, Driskell, Roberts, all talk about it weekly, how wrong people are about Bertrand.
Agree. Sometimes I don't know what people are watching...but I often wonder this when it comes to the casual fan...

I got really really angry at him last year after the targets. I called for him to be suspended. I still partially agree with myself, it was reckless and dangerous and cost the team. I think if it had been anyone else from any other team, we would have been calling for his suspension too if he did that playing against ND.

But my reaction was also biased by a roller coaster of an emotional season. He's a good guy and a quality LB. His teammates think so too.

That was the only issue I had with him.
At least one of those targetings was a terrible call.

The irony of propping up Michigan's LBs is that JD had more TFLs than any of Michigan's LB's. Y'know...the thing we rag JD for lacking.

I think the problem with Marist was two-fold. One, was him being hurt for much of the year and not getting time to really develop. 2) Not being in a position to utilize his strengths. He's best used as an edge player, and he was often asked to be a true will.

Marist is also slow on his reads, has difficulty disengaging blocks and lacks aggressiveness. I expect Sneed to be starting by OSU.

If Marist isn't put in a place to succeed this year, it's on the coaches. I think he will be put in a place to succeed. Jaylon will be a very nice piece,, but there's hardly a chance he'll be a "starter" like Marist unless something goes terribly wrong.

I'm only using the quotes on "starter" because it seems most positions outside of Morrison and Cam are up for debate game to game. "Starting" hardly matters in some situations because we're so deep.

(Or so I'm told)

And versatile. I thought I read that the plan this year includes playing Marist more often (though not exclusively) outside as an edge, while having Kiser play more in the Will position that Marist often occupied last year. Sneed then takes more the Rover role.
But aside from Bertrand at Mike it sounds like they all move around some.

Marist was somehow good in coverage last year but couldn’t tackle a rb or qb… I thought he was at his best when blitzing inside coming from the outside in 2020. It got him up against a rb and that was no match. Think of UNC 2020. Marist blew them up. last year he would just run into a linemen and get stuck.

We are going to see if the coaches are intelligent and good at coaching this year because there is no excuse at every single position. Talent and experience are there.

Notre Dame’s best linebackers are still trying to figure out where their Religious Studies, Econ, Calculus, Biology, and other core elective courses are…

They need to do whatever they can to get them pt — in blowouts, situational or assignment downs, special teams — whatever, doesn’t matter. Just sprinkle them in, immediately. 3/4 first games are cupcakes, should be blowouts, and warrant significant pt. Come mid to late October, you may really be able to rely on them.

When it comes strictly to Targeting penalties, I’ve not once thought that ND gets the benefit of the doubt in more cases than their opponents. I’ll never forget seeing Torii Hunter Jr get decimated with a helmet to helmet shot with nothing called. Knocked him out of at least the rest of that Texas game. Only one of many examples that I feel went in the other team’s favor.

maybe were arguing over verbiage.

The tweet that started this said LB will be "better".

Everyone proceeds to say JD is "good".

Well he has been "good" for most of his career. SO, if the LB unit is "better" wouldnt JD need to have improved on "good" to "Great" or something of the likes.

I dont think it's wrong to say there are better LBs out there and it's maybe hard to see how the LB unit has got "better" with mostly the same set of folks.

I’m pretty excited for this season and the way camp was run. I’m not as deep in the weeds as some guys but it definitely seems like MF has mirrored camp to his personality and style. There’s more of an edge to go along with increased competition and talent. I’m hopeful it will show on Saturdays as well.

From The Athletic's Oddly Specific Predictions article:

13. Notre Dame

The Irish will not figure into the national championship picture because they’ll lose at home to USC on Oct. 14 and have a 32-game winning streak against the ACC snapped at Clemson on Nov. 4. But Hartman is getting Notre Dame to 10 wins and briefly into the top five after throwing four touchdown passes in an upset of Ohio State on Sept. 23. Sophomore cornerback Benjamin Morrison will win the Thorpe Award as the best cover corner in college football, finishing with a nation-leading 10 interceptions and tying Mike Townsend for Notre Dame’s single-season record.

Buying or selling this scenario?

Can I break it up?

Selling Morrison's 10 INTs... he's not gonna get targeted enough on his side of the field to make that many plays. They're gonna avoid BenMo Island in general.

Buying 10 wins, but not in the way they state. I think Hartman gets his against Clemson. Still trying to decide if we drop both Ohio State and USC, or beat one of them and drop a game we shouldn't.

USC is a loss. We cannot tackle Williams and he will swag in our faces all night. It pains me to say, but it's true.
100% disagree.

That’s the one of the three ND wins, and wins by 10+

Game at ND.
Hartman instead of Pyne.
Not playing two true freshmen at CB, a 6th string CB at nickel, a backup at Safety & a newly converted WR to Safety.

The only way I see BenMo getting a bunch of interceptions is if teams go at Cam early and he starts the year on fire with several interceptions. Ten is a big number though. I don't see it happening either.

Sell, best chance we have at a title is this year. What I mean is I don't see ND having a better team than this years team for awhile. The path isn't easy to go 11-1 or 12-0, but I want a title, and the big boys have QB questions collectively for the first time in forever.

Could be cold, and our Dline will be deeper and hopefully not out of shape/lazy like a few last year.

Agree. I am pretty excited about the LB group this season. The mix of veterans and young talent is gonna be fun to watch. Not sure why the ND fan base doesn’t appreciate the veteran LBs.
Yet seemed to love Joe Schmidt lol

I loved his grit and leadership but dude had his limitations.

He was loved because he was a walk-on that became an effective starter.

Then he had an awful ankle injury and never regained his already marginal athleticism. He was never the same.

I don't, I don't know what makes this dude think that we're good enough to upset OSU but not good enough to knock off 1/2 of Clemson and USC. OSU will be the toughest game on our schedule, bar none, and we have a little revenge on our mind with the Trojans and their painted fingernails coming to town in October.

Is there a Pre-Season Strength of Schedule listing anywhere? ND's schedule seems tougher than most.
