Terrible QB play is what caused that game to get out of hand. Wimbush sucked at throwing the ball and the read option. Then Book comes and immediately throws a pick six. Not much else to it really. In fact, sub par QB performance is arguably the biggest legacy of Kelly’s time at ND.

Man, those guys tea-bagged the Irish that night. It's up there with the worst games Ive ever seen ND fielded.

We got out swagged. Those guys destroyed our "business" with belief.

Cant let that happen again. That was a bummer.

The Stanford game that year was worse in my opinion. Was at the game and it was just brutal. At least with Miami it was like “well they have some athletes”. Stanford? They just gave that game away.

I feel what you're saying but that was a new coach. against Stanford.

BK would have beat Stanford up and down. But we lost that day.

Who fucking cares? We already lost to Marshall. We had a coach fly off in the middle of the night and leave us with his "new friend" he tried to hire.

I'm here for his friend.

Stanford and Marshal were hiccups.

Miami under BK was a trend.

Most of us play poker, right? BK is that guy who studied GTO to a tee. He always makes the perfect play.

Problem is, if everyone in the world knows you're playing GTO... Phil Ivey comes in and takes all your money when you're not looking.

So... ipso facto... We need to be a swaggier ND football team.

I meant the 2017 Stanford game. That BK coached team 100% gave that game away. They did that in 2016 too. BK coached teams always had a couple indescribable clunkers. With all that said, I don’t think a BK coached team with Pyne at QB does any better than Freeman did.

The only ND player that didn’t get out swagged that night was Mack when he celebrated a score with his team down 34-6 with 12 seconds left in the 3rd.

If there's any game that should be circled 17 times over in '24, it's this one.

We better hang 60 on them. I want scorched fucking earth.

BK really gave some good impassioned post game speeches. I’m guessing he gave some straightforward motivational speeches pre game too.

I saw a story (maybe with 247 Josh Pate) that in order for ND to have a great season that Greathouse & Rico or one of them had to have a breakout season.

I disagree that they need to have a "breakout" season, but get them on the field so they are better for next season & have a bigger role. I think both will see PT. We saw what Greathouse did with Hartman at the B&G game. Our WR's are going to benefit big with having Hartman as our QB this year.

Rico is looking good in the clips we have been able to see.

I’ve seen several of his pregame speeches. No one will confuse him with Lou.

The only explanation I can think of was a terrible preparation and game plan on behalf of the coaching staff. Talent wasn’t an issue between the 2 teams. That ND team had 25+ players who have made the the NFL.

Here’s the thing… “fire up” doesn’t matter, true, and the all time example of this will be that USC intro before a Week 1 butt kicking by Alabama.

But how you “bring it” in practice does matter. You need a sense or urgency and a sense of competition integrated into your practices or guys do not get better. I’ve only coached on two teams in my life that “underperformed” and the key thread on both was that guys were just not invested in practice. Then they’d try to turn it on for game day and just invent ways to lose games.

Kelly 2016 was an example of this, he just went through the motions heading into the year with no vision or purpose or a settled QB and we saw what happened. Wei’s was perpetually snakebit by this… you heard constantly how low energy and slow pace his practices were.

One of my concerns with Marcus being young and well-liked is that sometimes that can lead to complacency and a team that isn’t hungry. Especially after losing Balis who was a tone setter. So I was very happy to hear those practice reports.

I took a few nuggets from BK and put them into my halftime speeches coaching b-ball. I remember one of his emphases was “no one is going to give you the game, you need to go out and take it”. Thought it was pretty good motivationally and practically

I’m fired up for a good meal at the Wharf District in DC, any suggestions? Or are my emotions getting to me and overrated?

Taking a business like approach is great 90% of the time.
The coach needs to find a way to fire the players up though when it's one of those 10% games and the team is flat.
He can look back to these practices to hopefully flip their switches on.

Agree with the message but his delivery always seemed inauthentic. It was very rehearsed and forced, and came off not very Motivational at all.

I always felt BK didn’t want his team to get too up for games and he rather they were even keeled and less susceptible to trap games

Practicing with focus and intensity will make it a habit which allows the habit to translate even better to prime time.

I’m not a fan of Kelly these days because he is LSU’s coach, but he had his moments at Notre Dame. I was supportive of him often as coach at ND. One positive memory: him drinking out of the trophy after a big victory and the team going wild. When the team was clicking, we had some dominant moments. And he would often demonstrate his passion for the team when celebrating. One negative memory: whatever the fuck that Miami game was. The worst example of his business mentality. Well, and that Michigan game.

Freeman will lead how he is going to lead, and I’m fine with that. It’s his team now, and it’s good to see some the program building some fire for this season.

Didn't he get on a plane to LSU like 10 minutes after that?

Don't know if this one has been posted but OL vs DL. Shows a little chippiness between Onye and Rocco.
