My deepest apologies for the late entry this week... I've been coaching playoff football in my son's peewee league. We play in the championship on Monday night, behind the power of the wishbone offense with the occasional I-wing formation. Run the damn ball. No big deal.
Speaking of high-level football, did BYU get caught peeking ahead to ND last night? They get a couple of extra days before playing ND after a Thursday night game that I failed to preview, but they did not look great, particularly against a team where they should have found some advantages.
Having said that... ND is off this week, so I'm sure if you're like me, you're using the first day of October to humor the wife by "willingly" doing whatever Fall activity she's been asking to do with the family. There's no fear of missing the Irish, so use the opportunity to do what she wants, that way she might let you watch the Irish for the next 8 weeks without complaint*.
However, before/after family activities, there is a decent slate of college football to partake in, unaccompanied by the usual stress of wondering whether ND is Actually Bad or Actually Good. So if you have the chance, sit back and enjoy an entirely stress-free day of viewing.
*LOL jk
FRIDAY, SEPT. 30th
- Houston had high hopes coming into the season... but Tulane was the team that briefly looked like a potential G5 upstart after starting 3-0. But then they lost to Southern Miss (probably powered by illegal funding from Brett Favre). This should still be an entertaining matchup.
- FINALLY. SMURF TURF AT NIGHT.
- #Pac12AfterDark RED ALERT. Washington is really good, but UCLA had their number last year, and is generally a tough out in every big game they play.
SATURDAY, OCT. 1st - EARLY
- Completely disregard what I said about humoring your wife with family activities. Get your ass to a good sports bar at noon because the early slate is LOADED.
- scUM travels to the pink locker room at Iowa, where visiting top-10 teams go to die. Hawkeyes win, somehow, someway.
- Cats vs Rebs. Stoops vs Kiffin. One of these teams will start generating "playoff potential" hype with a win, with the usual caveat that they have to find a way past UGA/Bama down the road.
- Oklahoma is pretty good despite last week's upset loss, but TCU is another upset-happy program. Let's see how the Sooners respond this week.
- Minnesota is back to rowing the boat. Purdue has been struggling behind sloppy play and injury issues. PJ Fleck hype is about to rev back up.
- Bert Bielema visits Wiscy, hoping to topple his old squad. Take the under, and enjoy the battle of run-first offenses.
- Simply tuning in for the weekly dose of "BC's OL Gets Philly J Killed"
- Navy's not good, Air Force is, but that doesn't matter in this one. Watch two different variations of the option offense do battle.
SATURDAY, OCT. 1st - AFTERNOON
- Arkansas was a couple of dumb mistakes (and one super heads-up play from the Aggies) from a big win last week... can they clean it up and challenge Bama?
- Rutgers is still a year away, based on how they looked last week against inept Iowa. Buckeyes, big.
- The Big XII may be the new SEC, where all the top teams just keep devouring each other. Baylor could beat Oklahoma State and disrupt the league's slim playoff hopes.
- This could end up being the best game of the day (though my money is on UK/Ole Miss). Wake put forth a hero's effort against Clemson last week, but fell short on the defensive side (and turned into cowards at the end of regulation). Florida State just keeps winning, even when it's ugly. Just enjoy a good ACC game that doesn't feature Clemson.
- Jalon Daniels at Kansas is the real deal. The Jayhawks QB is a true dual-threat that takes care of the football, and doesn't take sacks. Iowa State could be a decent test, though.
- The Aggies beat Arkansas last week, but I'm still just not impressed by them. This seems like a good spot for a Mike Leech upset special.
SATURDAY, OCT. 1st - LATE
- BK's first big SEC road game. Auburn might not be very good, but it is Jordan-Hare at night. Let's see if Big Game BK gets his troops ready, or if we see a patented BK-coached slow start.
- Go Bearcats.
- Woof. The late slate really isn't that good. But Georgia Southern visiting Coastal Carolina should at least be entertaining.
- Georgia will destroy Missouri, who should have beat Auburn last week. This is really just a tune-in-if-you're-curious-about-UGA thing.
- I honestly think the jury is still kind of out on both these teams. Clemson gets credit for beating Wake, but Wake's defense is abysmal, and their offense carved up the Tigers. NC State is untested. I'd give the edge to Clemson, which should help them continue to get over their offensive woes.
- WVU is going to win one of their close games at some point, right? This could be another close one if Texas doesn't turn it on and if WVU can keep it going.
SATURDAY, OCT. 1st - NIGHT CAP
- USC looked vulnerable against Oregon State, but escaped. Now they get a chance to tune themselves back up with a game against the floundering Sun Devils.
- Sort of an endurance test here with some #Pac12AfterDark. Stanford tried to be competitive with Washington last week, but imploded at bad times. Oregon appears to be hot-and-cold as they find themselves under Dan Lanning. They should get right against Stanford.
SUNDAY, OCT. 2nd - HURRICANE IAN RESCHEDULES
- If you have ESPN+, you can watch this game for an hour before the NFL games start.
- Reddit can help you find a stream of this game if you're a true sicko that wants to watch a rescheduled AAC game between two teams of undecided merit, instead of tuning in for you favorite NFL team.
