Well I guess that answers the Dex question a bit better LOL...

I think the 3rd WR group and the 1st will flip a bit by end of year. Do we actually think we'll see some production out of Finke this year? I hate to be down on the guy, but he's like a bad penny to me.

I think Coney will hurt someone this year.

I believe Finke and the other slot/non-wideouts will be casualties to a TE resurgence. I really look forward to a lot of snaps in 2 WR/2 TE sets.

Why are people concerned about Phil's motion all of the sudden? The dude balled out all high school with this motion, now we're concerned? How is this new?

This isn't high school ball anymore. I'm not saying he can't succeed with his current mechanics, I just wouldn't be surprised if he struggles with deep throws due to his baseball throwing motion.

One of the first things I noticed in this report is that Nick Coleman isn't even in the 2 deep anymore. Crazy how fast things can change.

From this report, sounds like a pretty solid day all around. Nice to see the Wimbush improvements weren't just rumors.
Also, pretty impressive for true frosh Micah Jones to open out already on the second team offense.

Whether he can do it on Saturdays remains to be seen but they were never just rumors. We had quite a bit of Spring ball viewings, just a few short months ago. So those around the program have watched him improve, at least during practice.

i saw him throw dimes deep during his state playoff game.....this isn't going to be an issue with him throwing deep balls

"Dexter will definitely be on the team this season"

You heard it here first, folks.

For real though, either ND beat are pussies, or they were issued to not push.

The latter.

I get the bewilderment (not you, FIL7), but really, what do you want them to do? They have to deal with the SID the entire year, and they want access. If you badger the head coach, after being told not to, they can revoke access.

And they all know the answer to the question about Dexter, and someone asked anyway, and they got the answer we all predicted. We saw this movie last year with KJ, and everyone was up in arms when reporters wouldn't keep pushing BK on whether he was suspended or not.

Dexter is not going to play against Michigan, nor the next three games after that. We've been told that for quite a while now. Reporters have already told us that. I don't need a reporter wasting his question pressing BK for an answer when we all know that no answer would be forthcoming; it would just be more coachspeak.

Exactly. Access worries aside, they all can ask BK the same question over and over, but he’s under no obligation to answer it any differently (in fact he’s probably prohibited from saying much more), and at some point it becomes a waste of time. So you ask once to get it on the record and move on. This isn’t the White House.

Either way, Kelly did share some new information which is that Dex is bought in and he fully expects him to contribute this year (and not transfer, or rot in the doghouse). That’s more important, IMO, than confirming whether his widely-reported suspension will be for three games or four.

Just as an FYI, they were talking about the Dexter soundbite on SportsBeat last night on WSBT radio. Hansen knows he is out the first 4 games and basically said that is all BK can say because its the university enforcing it, thus privacy issues. If BK does it for a team thing, then BK can discuss it, because it is directly a football issue.

True about Coleman. I'm wondering if Nick is going to redshirt this year so he can transfer without sitting out a year in the spring. ND did this for Josh Atkins his junior year.

I believe that Micah is on the second team, because the three guys on the 3rd team were not early enrollments like Micah was. So he has spring practice under his belt. And there are no other older WR's on the team that could replace Micah on 2nd team, keep in mind Jafar moved to RB.

The 2018 WR class looks really good so far. Even if they aren't starters, we can see the future is setting up well.

I don't think I saw Joe Wilkins in any vids yet?

Prister had Coleman running with the 2s and competing with Crawford at nickel.

Derrik Allen didn’t see much action today

That second offensive unit, would be the starting unit for half the BIG and pretty much all the MAC

I'm just so thankful football is finally back. Less than a month to go before we crush scUM.

4 weeks and one night!

Didn't his high school ranking start in the top 50?

Not sure if it was ever top 50, but it was definitely top 150. Finished at 158 on rivals. 247 dropped him big time after a camp performance he was deemed, not athletic enough.

Brah, lol.

You're missing my whole point. Phil has thrown like this since we've recruited him. Week 1 and he's three quartered arm and you're surprised?

Regardless if the motion is an issue or not, how would you ever expect his motion to be different with zero practices under his belt?...

I knew he had a different release because 247 guys ad brought up last summer, but I guess I just never realized how short it was until now. Panda and the II guys say that he can still sling the ball far; if thats the case, I'll let it go.

CULVER, Ind. — Notre Dame signed one of the nation’s top-ranked classes in 2018. According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, the Fighting Irish finished No. 10 overall in the country. The 27 signees were in uniform for Friday’s first fall practice of the new season.

Following practice, Irish Illustrated and 247Sports spoke to multiple Notre Dame football players to get their thoughts on some of the freshmen, as we try to see what type of impact the young talent has made on the veterans.

“They’re good. They’re all really good,” said defensive lineman Jerry Tillery, when asked for his impressions of freshmen defensive linemen Ja’Mion Franklin, Jayson Ademilola and Justin Ademilola. “I think they’re all getting better. They’re all young and fresh and obviously for freshmen football players, I think they are good and getting better. It’s going to be a good fall camp having them here with us.”

“Seeing them in the summer was awesome,” said tight end Nic Weishar of freshmen tight ends Tommy Tremble and George Takacs. “They’ve gotten better every day. What’s really cool about them is they can watch us older guys and be able to mimic us and not make the same mistakes as we do. As a young guy, I think that’s the most important thing. Their coachability and learning capabilities are great and they are both great athletes. Tommy is really quick. He’s got a really good capability of sticking it and getting in and out of his routes quickly. That was one thing I noticed about him. George is obviously such a big kid. He’s going to be an absolute bull as an inline guy.”

“It’s very early, but I think he came in firing away,” said quarterback Brandon Wimbush of freshman quarterback Phil Jurkovec. “I think he’s going to be one hell of a quarterback here. He has the will and the audacity and the urge to be a great quarterback at Notre Dame. He has a big body, a big frame and a strong arm. Every day, just take it slowly, day by day, and he’ll definitely be successful.”

“Obviously I got to spend more time with Jack, Ovie and Bo during the spring, but they are a bunch of guys who are just hungry to learn,” said linebacker Drue Tranquill of freshmen linebackers Shayne Simon, Bo Bauer, Ovie Oghoufo and Jack Lamb. “I think we’ve had issues in the past of guys coming in here and feeling entitled to stuff based on how many stars you guys give them. We haven’t had that with them. They just put their heads down and work. I’m appreciative of that. They respect the older guys. They respect what we’ve done and the time we’ve put in. They are just hungry to learn. They are going to contribute and they are going to play this year. They are great guys to have here.”

https://247sports.com/college/notre-dame/Article/Drue-Tranquill-Offers-Strong-Endorsement-Of-Bo-Bauer-120377275

Matthew “Bo” Bauer – an early-entry freshman Mike linebacker from Cathedral Prep in Erie, Pa. – caught everyone’s attention during one April spring practice.

Bauer took a blow to the knee, one that you could see from quite a distance away that hyperextended his leg and bent it back in an awkward fashion, forcing the 6-foot-2¾, 225-pounder to hobble to the sideline.

It didn’t look good. It looked like the kind of injury that might require a lengthy rehabilitation heading into the summer months, if not surgery.

About 20 minutes later, Bauer was back on the field. In live action. Playing as if nothing had happened to him.

It was just one example of Bauer’s impressive spring.

Friday, at Notre Dame’s first practice of the pre-season on Oliver Field at The Culver (Ind.) Academies, Bauer continued to impress. He consistently ran first-team reps at Mike linebacker as veterans Te’von Coney and Drue Tranquill rotated with Bauer.

“Bo reminds me of myself freshman year in terms of he’s always looking to meet, he’s always looking to get extra work in, he’s always looking to learn,” Tranquill said. “He’s hungry, just soaking things in. He works hard on a day-to-day basis.

“If you watch him, you’ll see a guy who is running 20, 30 yards downfield to tag the guy off. The dude gets in neck deep in the cold tub every day after practice. I mean, he’s one of those old, traditional middle linebackers that’s a leader.”

Make no mistake, neither Coney nor Tranquill will be coming off the football field much this fall, health permitting. But Bauer, sophomore Jordan Genmark Heath, and red-shirt sophomore Jonathan Jones are battling for an opportunity. Bauer and Genmark Heath in particular look like solid backups to Notre Dame’s outstanding one-two punch.

“Bo Bauer has physically transformed himself,” said Irish head coach Brian Kelly. “His mentality, his work ethic, the way he attacks things both in the classroom (and on the field)…He’s been extremely impressive…Jordan Genmark Heath has been moved to the Will (Buck) position. We need time there. Those will be crucial development pieces.”

Tranquill is convinced as it pertains to Bauer.

“I love him, man,” Tranquill said. “He’s a great guy. A guy I’ve tried to bring along and lead. He’s going to be the future of this team. He’s a good player.”
