So Wiltfong watched this kid a couple of weeks ago and called him a big timer. Said he was the best QB there, better than Brandon Wimbush. Strong words from Stevie.

Daelin Hayes hadn’t heard much from Notre Dame since a trip to South Bend in November, actually the 2016 Michigan athlete hadn’t heard from the Irish at all, but that changed last week when new assistant Matt LaFleur dropped by St. Mary’s Prep in Orchard Lake Village, Mich., to watch Hayes’ track practice.
“He really couldn’t say much,” the 6-foot-3, 225-pounder said of LaFleur. “He really just talked to all of my coaches just to get a feel for what type of young man I am and came to watch me run track.
“I haven’t talked to them really since I had visited back in November. That was pretty cool.”
LaFleur also left a flyer for the Irish’s camps next month and Hayes intends on making it to one of the sessions. He has one clear goal for the camp.
“Hopefully an offer,” he said. “That’s pretty much it. I’ve already seen the campus and whatnot. That’s pretty much the main goal, going down there, performing to the best of my abilities and hopefully the coaches will offer.”
Hayes already has offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Tennessee and Wisconsin. An offer from the Irish would put them in the mix.
“I’m very much open,” he said. “I’m only a sophomore. That would definitely be a huge school. They’d definitely be in my top five with Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Tennessee.”
Hayes toyed with the idea of making an early decision, but has decided not to rush things.
“I was thinking about it, but I decided to let the process run its course and just enjoy it,” he said. “Me being a sophomore, there’s a whole lot more football and recruiting that’ll be done between now and my senior year. I’m just slowing down and letting everything run its course.”
He also plans to camp at Michigan, Michigan State and Wisconsin this summer. Hayes stood playing linebacker out at a recent Rivals camp, but could also play running back. He wants to show those abilities at college camps this summer.
“Just showing them my versatility as a running back and linebacker, being able to run with fast guys. A lot of linebackers are strong and big guys, but they’re not as fast or agile. I feel like I’m both. I’m 6-3, 225 and I run a 4.5. I just want to show them I can run with those guys, be able to open my hips and show them that I’m an athlete.”

Notre Dame is the latest school to offer Frostproof, Fla., four-star dual-threat quarterback Xavier Gaines.

The 6-2, 200-pound prospect in the class of 2016 has early offers from the Irish, Auburn, Baylor, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Ohio State and others.

Per 247Sports, Gaines is the No. 95 overall recruit in 2016, the No. 4 dual-threat quarterback nationally and the No. 13 prospect in Florida.

Notre Dame football working ahead with 2016 QB recruits - South Bend Tribune: Recruiting

Matt LaFleur is looking ahead.

With a verbal commitment from 2015 quarterback Blake Barnett already secure, Notre Dame’s first-year quarterbacks coach has the luxury of focusing on the 2016 class.

LaFleur’s spring travel itinerary included a number of stops to evaluate 2016 quarterbacks. Last week, two more prospective signal-callers — Florida’s Xavier Gaines and Maryland’s Dwayne Haskins — reported Irish offers, bringing the total to four in the class.

Malik Henry of California and Jawon Pass of Georgia previously reported offers.

Notre Dame tight ends coach and Georgia recruiter Scott Booker visited Atlanta (Ga.) Westlake cornerback Ronnie Blackmon earlier this week. The 5-10, 168-pounder from the class of 2016 holds offers from Duke, Georgia Tech, Kent State, Louisville and others.
He is unranked by 247Sports, but he was named to the Maxpreps 2013 Sophomore All-American Football Second Team and the MaxPreps 2012 Freshman All-American Football Second Team during the past two years.

“Up until this year, Notre Dame really lost about a third of the top prospects in the country because they weren't in on them early enough,” Lemming said. “But I don't see that happening this year.
