Is Matuska 4th string then? That's much better depth than we're used to.

Matsuka looked good in the spring game. I thought he was more disruptive than Tillery.

FWIW, BGI (they do a pretty good job of updating the depth chart via practice reps) has Matuska at 3rd NT.

This seems pretty likely. Any hope we can get a sophomore redshirt for anybody who played last year? I think if given the opportunity, Cage would be immensely valuable to the team as a 5th year just like I think Matuska will be. Think Stanfordesque experience on the D line.

I can't recall for sure, but didn't Matuska lineup more against the younger oline men than tillery?

Could be. I don't remember. Just remember feeling Tillery didn't live up to the hype (not saying he won't be great, but didn't impress me.much in that small sample), and being surprised with Matsuka getting past the OL.

Was Matuska mentioned as a backup who could line up in a number of different spots along the line, or am I making that up completely?

I would be a huge fan of this, if the kid is comfortable with it. The idea is to rotate 10 DL and if you're not 1 of that 10 take a redshirt. Obviously Blankenship, Hayes, and Trumbetti will be needed immensely so we won't be able to do it with them. Right idea, for me, with Cage.

I am really looking forward to seeing Hunter be 100% healthy.... I think by week 4 he beats out Amir and is starting in the slot

I'm afraid Cage may be needed this year. Let's assume we only have 25% of the injuries last year, that'd still leave us with at least 3 additional DL contributors needed.

I also wish we'd be able to "greyshirt" one of our sophs but I don't think it's in the cards. The good news is we've recruited the interior very well over the last couple years so as long as we keep these guys on the roster, we should see some solid 5th year candidates soon.

So I went back and looked at the roster, here's who we can almost pencil in for playing time in the 10 man rotation:

1. Blankenship
2. Day
3. Hayes
4. Jones
5. Okwara
6. Randolph
7. Rochell
8. Tillery
9. Trumbetti

10. For the tenth spot, we must choose between:
* Bonner
* Cage
* Dew-Treadway
* Matuska
* Mokwuah
* Taylor
* Tiassum

Assuming a normal amount of injuries, I'd expect Matuska, Bonner and Cage to be ahead of the freshman. Which means each of them could take the redshirt and be potential candidates for 2020.

Does this seem correct?

I don't think the 10 is a hard number but this is a good way of looking at it. I'd say your 9 we can confidently pencil in. For me its Bonner and Matuska for the 10th spot, lets call it 11 and expect those to see significant snaps.

Bonner/Matuska can't RS as they already have.

None, of Bonner/Matuska/Cage can RS as all already have.
Bonner and Matuska can't, but Cage can...

Called the Hammes Bookstore, and they said the jerseys will be released tomorrow (Thursday). Expect something early afternoon.

Tom, Evan and I will be at practice from 10:45-12:45, and then we have BK and players afterwards. Steve will be on the lookout during that time.

Does that seem like an accurate analysis to everyone? I don't think this takes into account the highly ranked players that never made it to their junior year at ND. I thought I saw in a thread somewhere that ND has averaged out at #10 overall as far as recruiting classes over the last 5 yrs but most classes in the last 5 yrs lost a few top guys along the way.

Regardless, it's definitely time to make 10+ wins the norm.

Can't tell if we should be reading into the fact that Coleman is getting so many reps with the starters or not. I can't imagine there is much PT to be had at CB this season.

I'm betting it's part coincidence, and partly because BVG and co. are looking for #3 and #4 corners.

Watkins is getting rave reviews but is inexperienced, and Butler needs to improve big time... so I'm betting the young guys are getting plenty of reps, and Coleman has simply been on camera a bit more so far.

Not sure what you're speaking to here but it may have to do with ND doesn't take the class size a lot of other schools do. Class rankings, by the services, are based on numbers to a certain degree. So schools that have 30 players signed will be at an advantage to those that have 22. So the above is talking about quality whereas you seem to be speaking to quantity.

Really hoping Butler gets moved to Safety for next season. With the depth we have, I think he could start there. I just don't think he has the wheels to play Corner, but I'll be glad if he proves me wrong.

Welcome to the Butler to Safety bandwagon.

Part of my answer to the last question is this. I think they might be trying to find CB#4, on the outside, after Watkins and once they feel comfortable with that player they'll move Butler to FS.

I hope Brown gets the starting nod over Robinson. I think he can do more within the offense.

He's a guy I have been hoping would put it all together and really break out. It just hasn't happened. Great athlete just not a complete receiver yet.
