2014 Spring Practice Thread

Shoot, it must have been Matuska. I knew it was a combination of 8 and 9 at least. Either way, an impressive 4-second clip for Bivin. He would've handled many a d-lineman, regardless of skill, with that technique.

I am with you, bud!

I almost always have a roster in my hands because I cannot keep it straight. It seems to me that there is more roster turnover all of a sudden; not just starters gone, but people switching numbers. It is really tough to balance with senility!

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Brian Kelly wants more out of all of them, because that's just the way the head coach is wired. Mike Denbrock is not displeased with any of them, because six practices into spring ball would be an awfully early time for the offensive coordinator to heap any significant praise on a green group.

If Notre Dame's offense is going to break out in the fashion all expect now that it has a proven, dynamic quarterback in Everett Golson, it's going to need its receivers to take the next step. And these final three weeks of spring practice will probably go a long way in determining whether such a leap can occur, especially with headliner DaVaris Daniels exiled until the summer because of an academic matter.

"Now, it's kind of been funny, when I have a question, I have to figure it out as opposed to last fall," Corey Robinson said. "DaVaris played 'W' a lot -- whenever I had an issue, I'd go to him and he'd help me out, or I'd go to TJ [Jones]. Now I have to figure it out, and some of the younger guys who didn't play last year are coming to me and asking me what to do. That's really forced my hand -- and I know it's the same for Breezy (Chris Brown) and C.J. (Prosise). We have to know the offense better and it kind of puts pressure on us to do that so when questions are asked we can help out."

Robinson has raised eyebrows for the second spring in a row, this time for more than just his frame. The 6-foot-4.5, 205-pound son of hoops Hall of Famer David Robinson has asserted himself more after a nine-catch, 157-yard, one-touchdown rookie campaign, with Kelly saying the sophomore has pleased him more than anyone else at the position.

"He does exactly what I ask him to do all the time," Kelly said, loud and deliberately. "And he does it right. Now he may screw it up the first time, but you coach him and he does it right the second time. I love that kid.”

"They try to do it right," Kelly later added of the others when asked. "They all try to do it right. He does it right the second time. He's fun to coach."

Denbrock said the experience of Brown has made him the steadiest of the bunch, as his junior status and 17 career grabs for 265 yards and a score are all tops on the current roster.

It helps that youngsters like Robinson and
Will Fuller (six catches, 160 yards, TD) got their feet wet last season as freshmen, but there are still projects in spring enrollee Justin Brent and Torii Hunter Jr., who redshirted last season while recovering from a broken left leg suffered in high school.

"If you look at those other guys, it’s still new to them," Denbrock said. "We’re really working hard at all positions on offense because of our youth and gaining that type of consistency play in and play out that you need to control the game from the offensive side of the ball."

Sky is the limit for the WRs this year. Unfortunately, it won't come without a few growing pains, as the vast majority of them are young and relatively green still. Take the bad w/ the good and sit back and enjoy the show! I think the offense will finally be exciting to watch this season.

Nothing new, but FWIW from Hansen's chat today:

" I'm beyond surprised the announcement hasn't been made. I can't imagine the decision hasn't been made. Whatever decision they make has to be implemented the day after commencement in May. In the office pool, I have selected FieldTurf as my predicted choice"

I'm starting to think they announce it at the spring game.

I dont see the Bryant and Riddick comparison. If anything I see him similar to Trent Richardson or Gurley. He is athletic, strong, powerful and quick.

Cutting wise, he's much quicker than the two you mentioned and not as powerful IMO.

The alarm clock that goes off inside the heads of most seniors entering their final year of college football first rang for Ishaq Williams in the first weeks of January. Williams was at his home in Brooklyn preparing to return to campus for his fourth session of spring practice when he realized time was running out.

Ishaq Williams
Williams will be going head-to-head with offensive linemen more often as he moves to defensive end in 2014.

“I’m a senior,” he said. “There’s more urgency I would say. Another year of maturity and growing up, it’s time now.”

Williams made 45 tackles and one sack during his first three seasons playing behind outgoing senior Prince Shembo at the Irish rush end/outside linebacker position. Shembo’s explosiveness at the line kept Williams’ better-suited frame on the second team or in specialty sub packages. With Shembo gone, Williams arrived in South Bend this January to find his position at outside linebacker was no longer his.

Notre Dame moved the 6-foot-6 athlete to defensive end to better fit in the new defensive scheme introduced by coordinator Brian VanGorder, one based on a 4-3 alignment more frequently than the previous 3-4 look. Williams said the change three years into his career didn’t faze him. It added to the new mentality he hoped to take to the field.

His first order of business was adding weight to be more effective in the trenches. He went from the 260-pound range to 271 pounds by the end of February. Head coach Brian Kelly said the added weight hasn’t slowed him down. Kelly has noticed a different version of Williams in the first few months of 2014.

“He's a different guy than he's ever been since I've been here,” Kelly said. “Now, I'm not saying that that's going to translate into 12 sacks and he's going to be an All American, but he's a different guy than at any time since I've been here.”

Kelly pointed to a drill the team runs in its winter workouts called the tire war — essentially a tug-of-war between two player holding on to opposite sides of a tire. He said he’s never seen Williams compete as hard in the past as he did in tire war drills during February.

The former five-star recruit ranked among the top 26 players in the nation as a high school senior, according to 247Sports. He came to Notre Dame as one-third of the program’s renaissance on the defensive line. His counterparts, Stephon Tuitt and Aaron Lynch, earned accolades early in their college careers and are both headed to the NFL this summer. Williams has yet to match their production or the hype he carried at the start of his career.

Coaches explained that Williams needed to learn to practice and play with more intensity. His naturally calm nature held him back at times, or at least created the perception that he wasn’t competitive. That seems to be fading as the reality of Williams’ last chance sinks in.

“He's one athletic, big dude, and we've been waiting and waiting and waiting like you all have been waiting, and I'm pretty excited right now,” Kelly said.

Williams played a more traditional defensive end role while earning his hype at Lincoln High School in New York. He said he is getting used to playing with his hand on the ground again, and is looking forward to the more aggressive, attacking nature of the position.

“It’s definitely enjoyable, but we still as a defense have to grow into the system better to see how it really works for us,” he said when asked about playing in the 4-3. “I’m definitely in the beginning stages of the system and trying to learn what I have to do and commit it to a routine. I still know how to practice and go full effort and full speed.”

Last year Notre Dame’s starting defensive ends (Tuitt and junior Sheldon Day) weighed an average of 306 pounds. With Day sliding inside and Romeo Okwara lining up with the first unit through most of spring, the new duo at defensive end averages 265 pounds. Part of that loss of mass speaks to Notre Dame’s desire to get more speed on the field on defense, but a big part if also a sign of what the team lost in its front seven this season.

Williams said he may pad out his frame with a few more pounds, but doesn’t feel that he needs to gain more weight to be successful. VanGorder agreed and added that the Irish have plans to make William a big part of their game plan in 2014.

“He’s done a good job so far,” VanGorder said. “I think there’s a lot of football out there for him, and he’s just got to keep working at it. We’re counting on him being a solid football player for us.”

Post from TJ regarding LB's and In particular Schmidt and Turner playing over others like Deeb and Moore.

We're a long way off still from naming LB starters for Rice, though Schmidt and Jaylon have all but secured their spots and roles. Depending on front and scheme, or sub package, there are a few ways BVG could go with a third LB, and that's without accounting for Grace's status then.

Deeb, like Moore, has shown some good things thus far in run game defense out of base. Most of that work, it should be kept in mind, has occurred largely outside the media access periods. Both offer hope and developing confidence against the run. The issue to date for both, however, remains their fit and comfort against the pass in various schemes still being installed and assessed. For Moore, that's just not his best game per se. For Deeb, it's a developmental issue as he continues to learn and rep. We have better options against the pass with guys like Turner, Onwualu, Councell when healthy, etc, plus the unique ability provided by Jaylon.

Are you comparing their power and explosiveness? Cuz i dont see the comparison as far as eye test on size.

I see Folston as MJD more so than Bryant. I really like the Theo comparison for Bryant, but a stronger, faster version.

Folston reminds me of Ray Rice. Pretty similar in size and I think Folston could be a reliable pass catcher as well

Wow seems like I haven't been here in ages. I'm very intrigued to see what the team does this year, I think this team is going to absolutely loaded in a year or two. I suppose that's why I was so nonchalant about Tuitt leaving. Any news on Max Redfield?.How has he looked this spring?

@BGI_AndrewOwens: Christian Lombard had a sling on his right arm after undergoing wrist surgery. I did not see Jarrett Grace (fractured leg) at practice.

Very little practice notes today from the media as they were only aloud to watch 30 min. Of practice and half of that was stretching. I imagine und.com will have some video up but II and BGI will be limited.

Couple unimportant observations:

Chris Clark looks like he's 35.

Every time I see Durham Smythe's name, I read it as 'Durham Style'.

That's cool that the play music during practice. I assume it's because Kelly wants them to practice with distractions?

It also creates energy. Players love it, they've been doing it for awhile.

Dropped pass by Fuller, Golson staring down receiver and throwing balls high. Pffft! Very disappointed.

Chip Kelly does the same thing for Eagles practices except I think it was louder. Could barely hear myself think at training camp.
