Notre Dame Preview

The Fighting Irish come into the year #5 in both polls. This is probably the most overrated a Notre Dame lacrosse team has ever been. Notre Dame hasn't finished outside the top 10 in a long time, so they're a pretty safe bet for pollsters to pencil in at the #5 spot, but this year they play 8 of top 9 teams in the country... phrased another way, the only team they DON'T play from #1 through #9 is themselves. That's absurd.

The Big Picture
This is probably the least proven overall defensive until Notre Dame has rolled out in a very long time, but it's the most skilled attack line Notre Dame has had since Hicks/Swezey/Hoff. Notre Dame has two legit A-list players in Jim Marlatt and Matt Kavanagh on offense. Kavanagh could be a legitimate Tewaaraton candidate, and Marlatt will be tasked with most of the heavy lifting on offense. The supporting cast is full of question marks outside of Conor Doyle, who is going to be very good if not great this year at attack. On defense, it's not that any players are "bad"... it's just that there is going to be a lot of unproven pieces asked to step up. Conor Kelly should be VERY good in goal, but he is a first time starter. Either Prevoznik or Landis should be able to step up and replace Matt Miller, but who steps up as a short-stick defensive midfielder? What makes ND's defense so formidable is great goaltending coupled with impeccable coordination. If Notre Dame is going to weather their ridiculous schedule, O'Hara must step up as a big time leader and organize the troops.

Attack
Kavanagh and Doyle are locks to start, and could be one of the better one-two punches in the country. The big question is who is the 3rd starter? You have some really skilled finishers in Ryan Mix and John Sciosia who aren't dodging threats, or you have some unproven guys, like Kyle Runyon who is much more of a dodging threat. The big wildcard is Westy Hopkins. Does he play midfield? Does he play attack? He's going to be value added at one of these positions. The best bet right now would be that he plays midfield.

Midfield
Usually, you need at least one dominant midfield line, and a second very-passable midfield line to field a great team. The best teams often have two very good lines plus a number of specialist defensive minded or "two way" midfielders capable of pushing transition. Notre Dame comes into this year with literally only one player anyone in the country considers proven or dangerous -- Jim Marlatt. Marlatt is a great shooter, and an average midfielder in all other facets. When you talk to coaches about who else would play on the 1s with him... there are not a lot of answers. Will Corrigan played on the 1s for most of last year and absolutely killed the offense. He had one of the worst seasons I've ever seen for a top line midfielder on a #1 caliber team. He's a very heady player, his issue is that he doesn't have a strong offhand and he isn't super athletic. So he's not much of a dodging threat, you can sit on his right hand, and when the ball gets to him the offense basically stalls because he isn't enough of a threat. Does he stay on the 1s this year?

The x-factors are Jack Doyle, Pat Cotter, and all the unknown players. Jack Doyle was at one time the #2 overall recruit in the country and he had a good start to his career at Harvard. But then he had some horrible hip injuries and needed surgery and the Ivy League doesn't let you redshirt... so long story short he's now at Notre Dame for a 5th year to play with his brother. Can he step up or have injuries taken away what made him the #2 player in the country coming out of HS? Pat Cotter missed all of last season with an Achilles tear... how does he come back from that? Who of the freshmen and unproven players are able to step up? Early returns on Perkovic are good, Ossello and Brosco may be able to step up as offensive players this year, as could Pridemore and a number of other players. If there is one thing that could kill this team, it would be if the midfield doesn't jell. Mostly everything this offseason has been attack driven. There are a lot of players not named who SHOULD be good, have not shown out yet.

Defense
You're looking at Buglione and O'Hara returning, who are both good but not flashy defenders. Neither are great ball handlers. Conor Kelly was a Team USA goalie and should be very good if not great in his first year starting. Prevoznik and Landis are the two defenders in line for the last starting spot, and at LSM you're looking at Henry Williams (and/or Landis) as a really good player. Who fills in to supplement that is a bit up in the air. At SSDM, you're definitely looking at Jack Near... and beyond that probably Collins and some fresh faces. Notre Dame should have the horses, but in offseason scrimmages the defense has been streaky.

Lacrosse should be given back to the Native Americans. It's only right. East Coast prep schools have had it long enough.

I'm assuming sarcasm... considering that lacrosse is basically the only sport that Native Americans participate in at the collegiate level, some of the best players in the country are Native Americans, the Iroquois feature a national team that competes internationally, and many Native Americans credit the expansion of lacrosse for being a way to college... but I don't really get the joke.

Anywho, Notre Dame is scrimmaging Michigan this Sunday at 2 PM. I doubt anyone is going to want to skip NFL football to watch, but I thought I'd throw it out there in case you're in South Bend and itching to see us smack the crap out of Michigan in a sport. Expect a total blowout if starters get heavy minutes.

Steak and Hot Dog game on tap today at 3:30 in Arlotta if anyone is bored. Big intrasquad scrimmage where winners get steak, loser get hot dogs. The best part is the ridiculous and elaborate goal celebrations the teams put together... they're epic.

Hurling I think is tomorrow pre-football in Arlotta. I'd definitely check that out... seems like an awesome sport.

Also, Notre Dame crushed Michigan in fall ball 15-7 a couple weeks ago. And it's good to beat Michigan in anything.

Shocking.... if this has to do with the "hazing" incident than this is an utter travesty.

Also, as most of you know, the NLI signing period started yesterday and runs through the 20th for basketball, lacrosse, etc. ND signed a monster class... funny to think if we had committed to Hubbard playing both sports we could have him already signed right now... that will probably be top 5 and maybe even #1 when final rankings/evaluations come out after the spring. No doubt it would've been near #1 with Hubbard.

As is, ND signed 5 consensus top 50 players including flipping Mikey Wynne (#12 overall) from Cronell. Here are some articles on the Irish class and recruiting in the ACC:

ND has seemingly come a long way from the quality of player they used to field..................

It's about that time of year.... Virginia and Loyola square off tonight in the first game of ranked teams. Notre Dame debuts February 16th on NBC Sports against Jacksonville. It will be ND's only easy game before hitting a slate of 7 straight games against top 10 teams. Realistically, Notre Dame is probably going to need to 7 wins to make the playoffs. 8 wins against this impossible schedule probably means a seed, 9 wins+ probably means a great seed.

I'll do a full ND preview when I have a chance.

UVA vs. Loyola was insane. UVA was up 12-4 late in 3Q and it was a total blowout... then Loyola scored 9 unanswered goals in a row to take the lead 13-12 with 17 seconds left...

Then UVA knotted it up with 0.1 seconds to play. There was a LONG conversation among the refs whether the goal counted or not. Closest thing to a buzzer beater you will ever see.

UVA then went on to win in OT, 14-13.

Season kicks off for ND tonight at 7 PM on NBC Sports. The Irish will be in Jacksonville taking on the Dolphins.

ND scrimmaged 4 times over the offseason... against all four teams, they started slow. Versus Michigan, Detroit, and Bellarmine they then went on tears to blow the game open and win comfortably. Against Air Force, they got their butts kicked.

There are still a lot of question marks heading into this game... expect to see a rotation at attack and some different personnel groupings at midfield, and maybe even some uncertainty with the 3rd defender.

Albany and Cuse knotted up at 8. Heck of a game so far... Albany's offense is unreal but their D is something awful.

Less than 2 hours until faceoff on NBCSN.

8-1 at end of first quarter. Could be 13-1 if Jacksonville goalie didn't make some ridiculous saves. Best offensive quarter of lacrosse I've ever witnessed from ND.

Thanks for the update LAX. I don't get NBC Sports Network and I can't find a feed anywhere for thing. How does Notre Dame's new goalie look? Who's making the offense work so well?

Welcome back to the board good sir!

Offense is a product of everyone. Can't find a box score, but I think there have been like 12 goals from 9 different people and we've taken close to 50 shots at halftime. Halftime! I'd be happy with that production for a full game.

ND has rolled out at least 6 different attack and 9 middies not counting defensive/fogo types. A lot of young blood playing well... freshman Sergio Perkovic has 2 goals and is playing on first line, freshman Ben Pridemore is playing on the 2s and has looked sharp. This is the most aggressive and creative I've seen Notre Dame play in a very long time. 3 for 3 on man-up I think.

Biggest thing is that Liam O'Connor is absolutely dominating at the faceoff X. Think he has won over 75%.

Great to be back. It's been an absolutely crazy, fun year that's for sure. I am definitely ready for some lacrosse action though.

How did things end up? Is Jacksonville that bad (I know they played okay against Duke) or did ND come out to prove they are for real??
