Men's Lacrosse - Irish fall to Denver, 10-7 - One Foot Down
Pretty solid breakdown on OFD on what went wrong. The level 101 analysis tells you that their goalies were lights out and Shane Doss was not. But this breakdown does a good job of explaining the bigger issues with this team and the blueprint that is out there right now to beat them... play stall ball on offense and wait for a breakdown/then look to feed the backside, play junk defenses that confuse our offense.
We've played 2 teams that threw standard defenses at us: Jacksonville and UNC. We scored 19 and 11 goals. We've played two teams who have mixed in zone defenses and other junk... we scored 7 in each game, with the goalies putting up monster performances for the opposition.
The bottom line is that against Denver the Pioneers went "early" on Kavanagh with the defender typically shading towards GLE. The early slide came from the topside down... so the "under" move that is so effective for him was taken away, while dodging to the center of the field became impossible due to the slide.
UVA has been known to play a lot of zone in recent years with Starsia but methinks they're not going to get into a slog fest. They're going to play fast because that's their MO this season and we should have a good chance against them.
