Men's Lacrosse - Irish fall to Denver, 10-7 - One Foot Down

Pretty solid breakdown on OFD on what went wrong. The level 101 analysis tells you that their goalies were lights out and Shane Doss was not. But this breakdown does a good job of explaining the bigger issues with this team and the blueprint that is out there right now to beat them... play stall ball on offense and wait for a breakdown/then look to feed the backside, play junk defenses that confuse our offense.

We've played 2 teams that threw standard defenses at us: Jacksonville and UNC. We scored 19 and 11 goals. We've played two teams who have mixed in zone defenses and other junk... we scored 7 in each game, with the goalies putting up monster performances for the opposition.

The bottom line is that against Denver the Pioneers went "early" on Kavanagh with the defender typically shading towards GLE. The early slide came from the topside down... so the "under" move that is so effective for him was taken away, while dodging to the center of the field became impossible due to the slide.

UVA has been known to play a lot of zone in recent years with Starsia but methinks they're not going to get into a slog fest. They're going to play fast because that's their MO this season and we should have a good chance against them.

Sorry I missed this. Seems from that link above Denver was in and out of zone depending on whether Kavanagh had the ball in his stick and then were pressing out on him taking away his inside move?
Have to say I'm kind of surprised midfield defense is an issue for a system team like ND. Also they seem to have been baited in to those outside shots by the zone, playing right into DU's plan.
I know not to get too worked up by these early season games, but the lack of motion in the offense worries me. Kavanagh is legit, but this team needs other consistent threats. The inability to break down shorties at the midfield can really hurt.

Some good games today... #3 Hopkins vs #10 Syracuse on ESPNU at noon, followed by #4 Duke vs #5 UNC.

ND up 8-3 at half over UVA. Really dominated second quarter, but Kavanagh looked to pick up an injury. IMO, look for UVA to use some zone in the second half.

ND just beat the shit out of Virginia 18-9. O'Connor dominated faceoffs but unlike against Denver we actually shot the ball well. Incredibly impressive win.

That second quarter was phenomenal! It all started at the X but ND just looked crisp all around there. They definitely shot better and were just screaming with confidence at times in this game. They really frustrated UVA. That was definitely fun to watch. Hopefully this gives them some offensive steam moving forward!

OFD Films Men's Lax Edition: ND defeats Virginia, 18-9 - The Importance of Faceoffs - One Foot Down

Really solid article on OFD. Some other notes:
-Coming into college, O'Connor was a highly regarded recruit because of his overall game. Faceoffs are often so much about cheating and individual matchups that it's hard to project the talent of a FOGO, but O'Connor brought athleticism and overall offensive talent to the table that few have.
-Before O'Connor, ND had built it's suffocating defense on ball possession among other things. Taylor Clagett, etc. were dominant FOGOs and ND got absolutely fantastic wing play from guys like David Earl and Andrew Irving and others. O'Connor had a decent freshman year splitting reps with Marmul and winning about 55%. The past two years, where he has battled some injuries, he's hovered right around 50%. What's allowed him to step up his game so much this year?
-In short, it's his offensive skills that opponents have to respect that are responsible for a big part of the % bump. He almost always tries to win it to himself, and he's such a threat to create offense at that point that opponents are left with a tough choice. They either have to contest the groundball and risk giving up the fastbreak, or they have to drop their wings back and put themselves at a disadvantage. The cliche rock and a hard place.

So he's simply tougher, stronger, more skilled, and more athletic than most of the guys he's going against. He's not using a wide repertoire of moves... they know what is coming... but they can't stop it right now. The vast majority of faceoffs he's winning to himself and winning them clean. On top of that, the wing play this year with Near and Prevoznik has been very solid when it turns into a scrum. Faceoffs are a lot more than one guys, it's about a unit. And the unit is very effective right now in both winning a lion's share of the draws and ensuring the opponent is getting no transition opportunities off the faceoff.

Haha... UNC was clearing the ball late with 45 seconds left in the 4th quarter and a chance to tie. They passed the ball over #31 Jordan Smith for UNC who mishandled it for just a second. #50 Matt Kavanagh and all 5'8" of his honey badger self comes flying into the frame and knocks the much bigger Smith on his ass with a vicious body check that caused the ball to fly out of bounds and gave possession back to ND. ND would kill some clock and UNC was never able to get another quality look on offense.

Thanks man, reps. I watch LAX whenever ND plays but I have never once sat down with anyone that knows anything about the sport. I imagine it's like someone sitting down to football for the first time without anyone to help them learn the ins and outs...

I've said before, it seems like a great sport, but Idk the first thing about it. I didn't know you could body check like that in LAX...

Notre Dame plays at Ohio State tonight. This is our "rivalry" game dating back to the GWLL and was always the game circled on the calendar.

Ohio State comes into the game with one of the worst offenses in the country (55th out of 67 teams) and a staggering 2-5 record after starting the year as a pre-season top 10. They have one elite offensive player, Jesse King, and two decent players Turner Evans and Reagan Comeault. All of them are Canadian, and they play a style that is very bad for Notre Dame defense (see: Denver). They also have a transfer from Denver, Gordie Koerber, who is exceptionally talented but hasn't put it altogether since becoming a Buckeye. In general, their offense tends to be driven through their midfielders, and ND's midfield defense is the worst it has been in a very long time. However, Jesse King missed the Bellarmine game (injury?) and if he can't go for Ohio State for whatever reason that really limits their weapons.

Ohio State is probably the best 2-5 team in the history of lacrosse. Their 2-5 record is a product of losing to #10 Hopkins in triple overtime, #13 UMASS in overtime, #20 Penn State by 3 goals... but this was before the wheels came off the bus in Happy Valley and the Nittany Lions were playing like world beaters, #19 Hofstra, and #6 Denver. So they don't have a single loss to a bad team, and played some very good teams very close.

Their major weakness, offense, is a product of their personnel (especially uncertainty at attack) but also the fact that they don't have the ball very much. They're 48th in the country in FO% whereas Notre Dame is #1. On the surface, you'd expect Notre Dame to win upwards of 75% of the faceoffs tonight.

Their major strength, defense, has not been because of their incumbent 4 year starter Greg Dutton who is having a poor year so far and was actually benched for a true freshman in their last game. Instead, it's a product of really strong team defense and personnel. This is a huge concern for a team like Notre Dame who relies on dodging and mistakes, rather than great ball movement, to get its offense. Joe Meurer is one of the top defenders in the country (#10 pick in MLL draft) and will undoubtedly mark Kavanagh when they play man-to-man. I have no idea precisely how talented their midfield defense is, but Ohio State always tends to have really good athletes there.

The game can be watched here: Ohio State University Official Athletic Site

My prediction... I could definitely see ND losing this game, as it is a quintessential trap game leading into Syracuse on Saturday. But logic says that ND should prevail to the tune of something like 8-6. It's entirely conceivable that we run them off the field 12-4, it's also possible that our offense goes in the tank like it did against Penn State and we fall to them 7-5 or 7-6.

Thanks for the information LAX. I totally appreciate your knowledge and insight on this. I did tell my boys the same thing....That osu's record, in no way, shape, or form, matches their talent and that this is going to be a TOUGH game, especially on a Tuesday. I totally expect ND to come out slow but hopefully pull it together in the second half and squeeze out a W.
Hopefully that link works. I was expecting to just catch the second half on gamecast once I got home from work.

Isn't the game on Fox Sports?

I'm really not sure, I saw that tweeted but I don't know what Fox College Sports is. I don't see a TV listing, and I do see the webcast still listed on the OSU site.

Yeah, looks like it's only on Fox College Sports now. I have no idea how you get that mythical channel. Thanks, Ohio.

And it looks like game might get cancelled:

So they opted to play the game in a blizzard. ND trails 1-0.

This is how you get completely screwed over.

Yeah, held scoreless for 22 minutes and then scored 5 goals in the next 6. ND leads 5-3 at half after OSU got 2 back in the closing seconds. OSU only had two shots on goal the entire second period... both in the last 45 seconds, and both went in.

O'Connor not having a good day at the faceoff X in these conditions, but it seems like beyond that ND is outplaying OSU right now.

ND leads 7-5 heading into the 4th. OSU playing tons of stall ball... a bunch of timer ons. Shane Doss hasn't made a save since the first quarter and has allowed the last 4 shots on goal by OSU in.

We have very good wins, no bad losses. Lacrosse more than any other sport values SOS and who you beat above all. Back in the day, a 15-0 ND team got seeded 7th in the tournament behind #6 UNC who we beat and was 12-6 overall. Why? More big wins.

We had to watch updates on gametracker but it sounded like a sloppy game with clears. I'm assuming the weather played a factor in this? Either way, another good win for the Irish! We're really starting to get pumped for this team!
