But back on Shumate. If I could pick one player on the team to 'get it' and move into the starting role, it'd be him at SS and Max at FS.

My intuition's that Redfield is much more likely to "get it" than Shumate, which would produce your desired result anyway; Redfield displaces Collinsworth as the DB QB, and Shumate takes over Redfield's spot as the Athlete.

I realize people want to see Shumate play because of how talented he is athletically, but I don't think we should just assume Collinsworth is some slouch. If not for injury, Collinsworth would have been starting at safety before this year.

Given the quality of S play we saw in 2013, that's not exactly a ringing endorsement of his ability. But I'd be thrilled if Collinsworth stayed healthy and finally put together a complete season: (1) as a former WR and ST gunner, he's got more than adequate speed; (2) the coaches have frequently praised him for his football IQ; and (3) he's looked good playing near the LoS/ blitzing. Harrison Smith and Zeke Motta both went from goat to NFL-caliber S by their final season; no reason that Austin can't do the same. The spirit of ND's Great White Safety may have finally settled upon him.

I think injuries have robbed Collinsworth the Field time you need to QB the D AND play fast ...fast like like Smith and to some degree Motta late in their careers. Add in a new system...YIKES! What he has going is no one else can do it either...I think we'll have some face palm moments at safety...and a ton of experimentation back there before we hit the buzzsaw that is the mid season schedule

Actually, Smith had his best year in 2010, prior to his final year. He had 7 picks. He kind of disappeared in 2011. It surprised me that he was selected in the 1st after an unspectacular 5th season.

He had ~100 tackles in his last 2 seasons...

This ^^^^. Smith is a big bodied safety that I would consider elite when it comes to helping in run support and playing close to the line. He wasn't drafted because he is elite in pass coverage, which most safeties aren't. He fits the mold of what the NFL is looking for at this time, which is someone that can take on blocks and help close to the line, and quick enough to cover across the middle. Sounds like Smith to me, and makes sense why he was drafted in the 1st round.

Bonner sighting running with the ones as LB in goal line packages.

I noticed that too, my first thought was wow zone blitzing in the red zone, thinking he was lined up on the DL but it looks like he was playing OLB on a second watch :D

Billisking.com - The VOX of College Sport

johnny williams/nick watkins really looking impressive
gerg bryant is going to make plays were you are going to have your jaw drop, feels he is much more humble and needed that year off
everett golson obviously will be starter

feels we could be 6-0 heading into tally

feels we lead for soso, and possible pulls the trigger at michigan game

wouldn't be a big surprise if coney leaves ND after official committed to ND ,but will take officials to uf, miami

likes ND chances for Patterson if they push, will be at michigan game (travel arrangement is already set) same goes for henry ...depending on who we lay out the red carpet for

Thanks for the update. No comments on Henry?

And I'm surprised we're not hearing more about Blankership and Morgan. I know Blankership wasn't highly rated, but I think everyone on here is in agreement that he could be a major steal and seemed physically ready to help out on our famished DL.

As to our Safety position, my opinion is based on the following [possibly erroneous] assumptions:

1]. Collinsworth is a helluva football player with very good athleticism and a high football IQ. We should be thankful that we still have him, and have him healthy;

2]. Our safeties have generally not only been good, but approaching greatness --- the bum feelings largely devolve on Matthias, whether deserved at the level that people pour crap on him or not [my opinion is that he was put into poor schemes for his skill set --- Kelly said he was a better "outside in" reader and tackler than an "inside out" reader and tackler, and this was why he was being moved to corner];

3]. part of the DBackfield's problems under Diaco was that the coaching of the DBacks was split between Elliot and Cooks --- something that I thought at least mildly crazy from first I heard it. The DBackfield needs to operate as a four man unit [almost like the coordination requirements of the OLine] and basically be involved with a coordinated "dance" particularly from the safety's viewpoint [as they must react rapidly to their corners [and LBs] to fill gaps post snap.] Having two different coaches couldn't have been ideal [the best DBackfield in the country, Virginia Tech, has only one]; [also note that Redfield talked about how all four of them are communicating pre-snap now];

4]. probably of no account but.... Elliot coached Diaco at Iowa, I believe [I might be wrong about this --- too lazy to research it], and then is coaching under him at ND. An odd dynamic fraught with possible weird interaction collisions, one might think. Now Elliot is doing what he should be doing, grasping a position group free of structural weirdness, and "in back of his guys", we have one dedicated coach to coach up the DBack Dance. Sounds better to me structurally;

5]. With Russell, Riggs, and Luke sparkling at corner, Watkins and Atkinson surprising, there is no room for Farley there. With Onwualu, Tranquill, Turner moving down to Elliot's linebackers [note: safeties to the ex-safety-coach], safety gets a little thinner. Though Collinsworth and Redfield appear to be solid, Cooks/van Gorder are a bit concerned as to who would be next-man-in. Shumate just doesn't get it apparently --- he may turn out to be our most recent Filer/Moore. [hopefully not, but the trajectory so far isn't good]. Baratti hasn't shown what he can do avoiding-injury-wise, and despite terrific athleticism, maybe not yet where he fits [I thought he was a good candidate for our smaller faster outside linebacker guy, but am apparently wrong.] Hardy might be good enough, but which safety --- seems like a Redfield back-up. So who backs Collinsworth if he needs to go out? That, I believe is all that this shift of Farley back to safety is about --- he's not needed at corner, safety's a bit thin, and he's a vet. Panic seems out of order on this move; we should be more than fine.

For me its far less of an indictment on Blankenship as it is a huge positive for ND with regards to last years DE haul. Blankenship was a steal, IMO. However, so was Williams, Bonner, Hill, Trumbetti, etc. We want to stagger eligibility if we can and it looks like a RS year for Blankenship is in the cards. With regards to Morgan he's just in a tough spot. MLB is the voice of the defense and telling other HS players what to do and where to line up is much easier than doing it to college seniors especially ones that have played in a NCG. That communication will come and he'll be fine.

I found it interesting that Loy basically said that we'll need to chose one or the other that night to cater to and our fortunes will probably hinge on that. He thinks we should go Patterson as he thinks we have a better shot there. Still likes Malik to FSU.

That just seems absurd to me. I want my cake and I want to eat it too. I don't get why we can't roll out the red carpet for both.

I saw an episode of Kenan & Kel before and Keenan brought two seperate ladies to the movies on the same night and every 10 mins or so he would duck between screens to keep his dates happy.

So in summation, it can be done

Lucci, I listened to it straight through and can't rewind that part right now, but I don't think he said ND needs to choose which to roll it out for, just that it'll be interesting to see who they roll it out for.

Like the poster above, I think they'll be very open with both and both will get super treatment.

in listening to the bill king show...he said that both will be at the michigan game...but he felt that whoever we rolled out the red carpet for will make a big impact on that recruit...he was talking a lot of patterson and then added a tid bit on henry...then on his 10min podcast he noted that Henry was def a lean towards fsu over us at this point as he had a great visit there....he seemed to imply that we should be rolling it out for patterson as he doesn't seem to be the lock to lsu as some think but def hears that fsu staff feel very comfortable w/ where they are at w/ henry..

Notre Dame Fighting Irish Max Redfield takes advantage of fresh start - ESPN (FREE)

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Max Redfield has finally been running with the 1s in practice, the same way he started in his most recent Notre Dame game, the same way everyone envisioned he would from Day 1, and everything seems so simple now.

Redfield has a new coordinator, a new scheme and a new opportunity. And after repeatedly feeling as if he could do no right last year, the safety has his feet under him, ready to attack a sophomore year that oozes with potential after he experienced some rookie blues.

[+] EnlargeMax Redfield
Brian Spurlock/USA TODAY Sports
Safety Max Redfield, who had a total of 12 tackles, says his freshman season was a challenging one.
"I was devastated," Redfield said. "I would be the first one to tell you. It was hard to stay motivated throughout the year. I felt like I was trying to do everything I could to get on the field, but continued to make some mistakes because the defense was so detailed and so in-depth. It was very frustrating. But it kind of just humbled me that whole year, just stick to my roots and keep going."

Redfield entered Notre Dame last summer as a four-star recruit, ESPN's No. 2 athlete in the nation. He struggled to see the field, though, failing to enter the Irish's Week 2 loss at Michigan and finishing with just 12 tackles on the year.

Even when he recorded more than half of those stops over a four-game stretch entering the regular-season finale at Stanford, and even as the staff told him more time would come, and even as two safeties got suspended for that Cardinal game -- well, Redfield still barely played that night, sinking into further self-evaluation.

"Coaches obviously had a reason for everything. I'm not going to second-guess what the coaches have to say. If they feel like I shouldn't be on the field, I guess I shouldn't," Redfield said. "I obviously wanted to and tried to do everything I could to change that. But I felt like I almost wasn't good enough, which is obviously a tough feeling to have."

A start against Rutgers in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl re-kindled that fire, assuring Redfield he had at least been heading the right direction. A new defensive coordinator, Brian VanGorder, has offered Redfield a bit of a fresh start, allowing him to run and react more in the secondary.

Notre Dame loses no one from last season's safety contingent, and here the California kid is this summer with a clear head and a starting job there for the taking.

"He's made a good jump," head coach Brian Kelly said. "Max is a very gifted player. We've just got to continue on the learning curve. We have days where you miss an assignment here and you can't miss an assignment back there. We have to be vigilant in making sure that we're clean back there."

Kelly said the directing of the defense from the back end will be left primarily to fellow safety Austin Collinsworth, though Redfield has been eager to build on his enhanced role. Swimming above water is a start for now for the 6-foot-1, 198-pounder, and how far he can go from there is the intriguing part.

"I feel like I elevated my communication as well as confidence on the field," Redfield said. "Obviously being a starter and being a backup, your confidence just changes naturally. And I feel like it has to change. Being on the field, you have to have 100 percent confidence in your calls and having 100 percent knowledge of the defense to make those calls."

Funny how Diaco's defense was considered vanilla and boring by many fans and commentators but the players themselves actually thought it was detailed and complex!

Some interesting notes from II rewind of UND.com's coverage yesterday. Trumbetti getting 1st work. Also, lots for Bonner at DT and Nyles MLB running with the 1s.

For what it's worth:

My brother had Collinsworth and Riggs in one of his classes. He says that both of them are pretty bright guys, but he said that he would have expected them to be MUCH bigger than they are.

Sounds like Goal Line/Redzone D to me

More than just goal line reps. All they really do is slow down the footage from UND.com and look at who's where instead of watching who the camera is focused on. Bonner, Trumbetti, and Morgan were fixtures running with the 1's. Now I don't believe that they are pushing Day and Schmidt for starting jobs but its at least worth noting.
