I guess the [unfortunate] ever so slightly positive aspect is he could apply for a medical/5th.

Wasn't Springman's freshman year an elective redshirt? You can't apply for a medical redshirt unless you've lost two (or substantially two) years to injury. I could be wrong but I don't think that first year was lost to injury.
