Kelly says that distinctions between boundary and field corner will fade somewhat, five remaining guys will work both sides.

cornerback (or stud) by comittee. Fresh legs and coached up on the sideline. Look for who rises to the top. Good coaching move.

said Davonte Neal will remain on offense.

Freshman class- they love to play. Not afraid to get out there and compete.

Kely says still pretty balanced on QB reps.

Kelly doesn't name a starting quarterback and said reps will continue to be evenly split between Golson and Hendrix.

Still pretty balanced on QB reps. Kelly said no further separation between quarterbacks in the past few days. Brian Kelly on QB: "We're still pretty balanced with the reps. We're still not there yet. We're moving in the right direction.

So is EG not there yet or is AH making a move? Interesting to not have a starter yet...I hope one of them makes separation, or they are both so damn good that he can't decide who to start.

9 INTS! One more than ND's entire team last year? "... with a few defensive scores?

And you wouldn't move him?

I'd move Wood, Eifert, Riddick, Golson, or ANYBODY on Offense IF they were All American Defensive Caliber with the ability to more than double last year's TEAM Interception Total. That would take ND from #93 to a Top 5 Defensive Pass Unit. Alabama only had 13 INTs as a Team.

Jeff Burris was a prime time HS RB and Holtz turned him into an All-American DB who also was a prime time scoring maching for ND in the Full House Backfield.

Vontez Duff ???

An AA CB makes ND's defensive squad elite. Take the current team and add Shane Walton. USC's passing game would get cut in half. Denard's popfly TDs passes would be Pick 6's.

Unfortunately Neal isn't a AA DB nor is he an AA WR.

You might want to rephrase your hyperbole.

BTW, Walton's "Depth" at CB was Jason Beckstrom and Duff's was Clifford Jefferson and ND had no where near the Front 7 in front of them like today's Front 7.

Why would I rephrase a hyperbole? That's exactly what it was for, an extreme exaggeration to prove my point. It doesn't matter if Neal were to move to CB and put up huge numbers if a third/fourth corner doesn't step up to cover the third/fourth receiving options of the likes of USC, Oklahoma, or even Michigan. Those third and fourth receivers can still burn you if you don't have depth, even with a star on one side of the field.

However, I began playing devil's advocate, and will say that through my exaggerations and arguments, I AM in favor of the elite players being on defense. BK will get production offensively with the right QB, even without Neal on that side of the ball.

BK - Much more accustomed to the style of offense Navy employs. We have to be disciplined. Can't let your guard down with the offense for one sec

I'm wrong at least 75% of the time, but I'd be very surprised to see Davonte Neal at CB. If Kelly and Diaco wanted to reason this way: "Davonte was #5 CB in ratings, and his HS coach said he should be a CB, therefore we really should put him over there", that would have been done pre-Lo's injury --- Lo wasn't ever viewed as some kind of elite lock.

When corner looked ominously unstable, Kelly/Diaco STILL didn't move Davonte, but instead moved two other elite talents [Russell and Shumate]. Why? [If the "he's just too good" argument was making sense to them?] My opinion: Kelly's looked at Davonte and said "wow.... sorry Bob you can't have him".

For the "compromisers": you don't specialize all your time on the offense and step across the line and fill in a little at CB. By definition that scenario means that most of the snaps you field two other Starter CBs. If you have two starter CBs, why steal a super-O player? [Even in practice]. If you're talking only "nickels", then we have safeties to move in instead --- our nickel last year was almost always Gray, Blanton, Smith, Slaughter, and Motta.

I don't get the Neal-to-D theory, but, as said, I'm wrong most of the time.

edit: while I was slow-typing the above, ten million presscon posts came in and the question was answered --- sorry for the too-late comments.

But at least they matched Kelly's decision.

Kelly said he's not a big fan of playing a game in Ireland. "Have to prepare the best we can for the situation in which we play. "I'm not a big fan of games in Ireland. I'd rather play them right here."

Blah on not naming a qb yet. Just name one and get him the majority of reps so he can be as prepared as possible.
