The Turning Point @turningpointnd
Chip Kelly to the Browns?! Wow
He's not legit.
Did the Chiefs pull some sort of Bob Diaco interception of Ishaq Williams from Penn State type of move on Andy Reid from Cardinals?
CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Browns interviewed Penn State coach Bill O'Brien for their head coach vacancy this week, a league source told The Plain Dealer today. They also interviewed Syracuse coach Doug Marrone on Thursday in Arizona,
a league source confirmed for The Plain Dealer.
Up next for the Browns is Oregon coach Chip Kelly on Friday in Arizona, the source confirmed. Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner are conducting the interviews.
The fact that Marrone's interview took place today was first reported by ESPN's Chris Mortensen. He also reported that the Browns interviewed former Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt on Thursday.
O'Brien, the Big Ten coach of the Year, led the Nittany Lions to an 8-4 record in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky child-sexual-abuse scandal. Previously, he was offensive coordinator of the Patriots, and helped guide them to the Super Bowl last season.
Marrone, 48, has gone 25-25 in his four seasons at Syracuse, including 8-5 this season. But the Orangemen finished the season on a 6-1 roll and defeated West Virginia, 38-14, in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl on Saturday.
Marrone has six years' NFL experience, including three as offensive coordinator with the New Orleans Saints from 2006 to 2008.
In 2008, the Saints led the NFL in total offense, with 401.6 yards per game; and in passing offense with 304.2 yards per game. In each of Marrone's three seasons as coordinator, quarterback Drew Brees passed for more than 4,000 yards.
The Eagles and Bills, who are all vying for the same candidates, are all expected to interview Marrone, O'Brien and Kelly. Marrone is close friends with O'Brien from their coaching days at Georgia Tech. Their wives were college roommates, and their families vacation together.
The Browns and Bills are both scheduled to interview Kelly on Friday, with the Eagles also talking to him either tomorrow or over the next couple of days.
First, Kelly will play in the Fiesta Bowl tonight against Kansas State. Then the mad scramble for him begins.
