What's with connecticut being on our schedule till 2017, besides 2012? Are we trying to turn that into a rivalry game as well.

They had an extremely hard time getting the schedule filled for next year. Not sure why they let it wait for so long, but I am fine with the opponents they got. I live in Nenraska so i have to take the heat for ND scheduling all the time, even this year when NU basically won the SUn Belt conference with its first 3 of 4 games. Now who's laughing...........

yea that was pretty ridiculous.

both penn state and nebraska scheduled these weak teams early, then when they actually played somebody they got beat.

at least next year we start with the usual suspects, and play the weaker opponents later on the schedule.

we basically have a five week tune up before sc next year. It should be a fun season.

We have an agreement to play x Big East teams over a certain number of year (may be 1 one year and 3 the next and none the third year, and then 2 the following) - my numbers are purely fabricated, however, it is an agreement that we play a certain number of games (x) over a certain number of years (y) - the combination is left to us as long we complete the x in y. Now, UConn was our best bet at getting games either home or neutral - without losing a home and away.

Ok, makes sense, I'd like to see us mix it up more, maybe a WVU game. Cincy would be sweet too, play them at the Bengals stadium becuase there's is too small..

Gotta schedule who you can. No one has room so you take what you can get. You can schedule Delaware State because they'll forfeit one of their home games to play teams like Michigan. So in reality their kids got their asses beat, got a big payout and lost 2 games in one day..

Still confused by Western Michigan, seriously? How about bringing back Nebraska. Would love the chance to see them come to South Bend as their entourage is legendary (and virtually only wear skirts I might add).

Hell yeah that would be tight. Good Idea, I'm a Bengals season ticket holder, most definitely would attend this..By the way Paul Brown Stadium is one of the best stadiums in the NFL. Every opposing fan always gives props on how nice the stadium actually is. That would be a good idea though I'd be down for that.

Details about their entourage please?

Baylor in New Orleans would be a fun game to go to as well. Is this game at the Saints' stadium?

They didn't wait so long. Last week the ChiTrib reported that when Swarbrick came in as AD he was informed that ND had TCU on the schedule in 2010. When he commented on that in the media, TCU advised there was no contract in place (Thank you Kevin White?). Swarbrick then had to scramble for a Div 1 opponent. The MAC actually had to relax its rule about playing OOC in midseason.

Around the Bend: Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick had "big time" scramble to finalize 2010 football slate

First, ND would probably have to join the Sun Belt for Nebraska to consider them for an OOC opponent.

Second, the open date was October 16, 2010. I suspect the Big 12 would think poorly of the Huskers for missing a scheuled home game with conference foe, Texas, while traveling to South Bend.

They also rave about how polite the Bengals players when they the other team dominate them.

I guess we have to define what we want ND football to be. If it means lots of home games and great tailgate parties on crisp autumn afternoons on our beautiful campus with guaranteed winning seasons, then the athletic department is giving us everything for which we could possibly hope. Let's not knock them. If, on the other hand, we're determined to be credible on the national scene, and be taken seriously on that basis, well, let's face it - we're gonna have to schedule games against perennially top teams on a home and home basis, play half our games on the road like everyone else, and stop stacking the deck in our favor. Just in case you were wondering, Western Michigan, Tulsa, UConn, Nevada the service academies???....nope, those aren't the perennially top teams, nor are they teams picked to give us credibility....just wins. For me, personally, I like the former concept better than the latter - more fun - but I also don't whine about stuff like rankings. We don't belong in that discussion as long as we pursue the present policy.

Hey, I can drive to my tailgate without embarrassment to see WMU or Tulsa - a hope that it shouldn't be a game (score wise) - surely. But, I'd be embarrassed if I was holding a ticket for Charleston Southern, Citedel, Western Kentucky, Memphis, Western Carolina, Florida International, Furman, Louisiana Mon/Tech/Laf.... Chattanooga, North Texas, Troy, Idaho anything, Deleware State, Eastern Michigan, any school with a word in addition to Illinois in it's title, or Tech.... Western is a potential MAC Champ in almost any given year.... Eastern is on their schedule... BGIF can say he researched and this years schedule pales in comparison to other coaches eras... but economics being what they are - we have a more than respectable schedule considering name elites won't play without home and aways and we WILL have 7 - 4 - 1. So we drop BC but pick up Oklahoma and I'm sure after Oklahoma we will schedule with another elite. UM, MSU, USC - in any typical year compares with LSU, Georgia, and almost anyone else in the SEC - or USC, Oregon, Cal. - or - Oklahoma St. Texas Tech., Missouri (in a historically typical year). I've never gone to a ND game embarrassed to carry the ticket I'm carrying... Name an elite other than USC, Washington St., or Washington that can say that. We get 9 teams on our schedule that qualify and then play in bowls - then let them bitch.

It doesn't seem to affect Florida's ability to be taken seriously. Or Oklahoma's, or Penn State's, or any of a half dozen or so other teams. But I hope it is only temporary. I hope it is just a short term thing, until ND is ready to beat the elite teams again. Then I want to see it go back two or three of the top teams, every year.

We do belong in the discussion with that policy, provided we beat USC, Michigan, and 1 other top 20 team on our slate each season. That is today's definition of a navigable championship schedule. Ohio State is a team successfully utilizing that model on a regular basis.

We are at the point (almost) where we are beating the teams we are supposed to. The next step is beating the USC's and Michigans on our slate

Not that I'm completely giving up on this year and looking ahead to 2010, but does this schedule suddenly look a lot harder than it did a couple weeks ago?

S04 PURDUE
S11 MICHIGAN
S18 @ Michigan St.
S25 STANFORD
O02 @ Boston College
O09 PITTSBURGH
O16 WESTERN MICHIGAN
O23 @ Navy (NY/NJ)
O30 TULSA
N13 UTAH
N20 ARMY (Yankee Stadium)
N27 @ Southern Cal

Purdue, Michigan, MSU, and BC should all be improved. Stanford and Pitt look like they should be top 20 teams for next year. Navy is now a rivalry, Utah will be dramatically improved, and Tulsa has a very scary offense. Oh, and USC will still be stacked. Regardless of who the coach is, this schedule is not as weak as people made it out to be a few weeks ago.
