247: Four-Star Friday: Cody Simon, RJ Moten among the risers

LB Cody Simon – Already a guy that we had on our radar as a player to monitor, Simon had the kind of showing that we like to see in an in-person evaluation at The Opening regional. At 6-foot-1, 217 pounds, Simon had one of the best combine days that we’ve seen all spring at the linebacker position, clocking a 4.62 40, a 39-inch vertical and a 4.28 shuttle. Simon is also the younger brother of Notre Dame linebacker Shayne Simon so he has some pedigree. In an era that we see athletic linebackers with a hybrid skillset significantly valued, Simon looks like a player that has the potential to emerge as one of the top priorities at the position as this cycle plays out.

The move: From a high three-star rating with an 88 grade, Simon has been elevated to a 92 rating and a Top247 prospect with considerable upside to continue to rise with improvement on already impressive film.

Its got to be an advantage to him to see what his brother has had to work on over the last few months. Identify the same areas he has to work on (if at all) and get a head start.

Yea, I was on the fence before not really caring either way. But I’ve moved fully into let’s get him a spot. Maybe 1 RB does that.

he's the exact type of dudes we need in the middle. Athletic and hopefully can match the production in stopping the run game.

If they were really thinking of not taking him before, he's made that an almost impossible position to stick to now. He keeps winning MVP's at every camp. Could you imagine if they passed then he goes to PSU/OSU/Anywhere U and becomes an All American?

exactly can't let that happen. he's what the ILB position has evolved to at the college level. we don't need run stuffing pluggers who can't cover anymore. we need athletes who can play in space and be servicable in the run game aka Drue Tranquil.

Yep. That's why when everyone was calling Shayne the prototype Rover I was like Buck from Day 1 and then Mike when a Lamb or Kiser steps up.

Well they did offer.

In this case, I think it's always been more about how hard the staff was/would push versus whether it was a committable offer or not. I'm sure that if Cody called up and said I want to be in this class, they'd take him. However, I don't think it was ever going to be that easy, as he wants his own recruitment. Therefore it became, how hard are we going to push for him?

Wish we could've closed this awhile ago

In fairness to the staff, Simon was not looking to make a decision before the summer. This isn't a situation where we slow played and turned him away. The staff has actually done a really good job here of being honest about the position while also letting him know that if the numbers shake out, he's their guy.
