Makes you think something went sideways on the visit. Or he just leveled with the staff and told them he’s going to TCU.

I’d highly doubt it was the former. His family is very pro ND. Fort Worth (TCU) is 20 minutes away and as he’s getting closer and closer to a decision, sounds like distance is becoming an issue.

Yeah, no it doesn’t seem that way. He appears to be a pretty with-it kid. I just don’t always get how distance suddenly becomes an overriding factor this late in the process, especially when the family is pro-ND. It’s not like northern Indiana wasn’t 1,000 miles from home when he started with recruiting. (I also don’t get why so many of these kids don’t want to leave home for college, but that’s just me).

I wouldn't consider this late in the process, at all. He hasn't even had an ND offer for 2 months, at this point. This was his first OV.

If he is getting “closer and closer to a decision,” as you put it, it would seem fairly late in his process. And yes his first OV but he came up for a game last fall as well. (Hell the dude’s 247 profile headshot is a picture taken in Notre Dame Stadium).

TCU 247 article Freebie
https://247sports.com/college/tcu/Article/TCU-is-among-the-favorites-for-Aledo-TX-defensive-end-Colt-Ellison-117455702

Aledo (TX) is regarded as one of the top football programs not only in Texas, but the entire nation. The Bearcats have won six state championships since 2009 and reached the title game again in 2017.

Winning is a tradition in the tiny town just west of Ft. Worth.

In addition to the high number of wins, Aledo has also become a stomping ground for college recruiters over the years. The Bearcats have produced a high number of college players and the 2018 team is carrying on the tradition with several prospects from the 2019 and 2020 classes.

Among the top names is defensive end Colt Ellison.

The 6-foot-4, 235-pounder currently holds 22 offers on the table including Penn State, Notre Dame, Baylor, Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Washington and TCU among others. Ellison recently took an official visit to Notre Dame.

“It was pretty good; it’s a long way away,” he said of the visit up to South Bend.

Just over a week ago Ellison was on TCU’s campus for the Frogs’ annual spring scrimmage. Despite the cold weather, Ellison enjoyed his time on campus and had a chance to talk to some Frog commitments.

“It was pretty good and I got to meet a couple of the commits; Brannon Brown and Dee Winters,” he said. “I talked with Brannon for most of the game.”

The recent visit to TCU was just the latest in several visits he’s made to the Ft. Worth campus. Ellison has visited multiple times in recent months from a junior day to spring practices. In that time he’s built great relationships with the coaching staff including Jarrett Anderson, Sonny Cumbie and ‘his guy’, Tony Savino.

“It’s been great; I’ve built a great relationship with all of the coaches; it’s just like a big family,” he said. “It’s been great so far.”

Playing time could help TCU when it comes to landing Ellison. In fact, that’s one of the big factors they’re telling him with Ben Banogu, L.J. Collier and Michael Epley all graduating after this upcoming season.

“They’re telling me that they’re low on defensive end so they need three this class and I think they want me pretty good,” said. “They said I could play early because three people graduate early and I would be a great fit.”

Living just down the road from TCU, it was always a dream for Ellison to get recruited by the Frogs. Now, he’s hearing plenty about where he should continue his career from friends and family.

“It’s pretty great; all the people in Aledo want me to go there, all the parents want to come to the games and watch me,” he said. “My grandma is a big TCU fan and she really wants me to go there.”

Proximity could play a big role in his decision. Ellison is very close to his family and although he knows he would get the support from his family wherever he goes near or far, playing closer to home is something he’s taking into serious consideration.

“It’s very important,” Ellison said on how important distance will play a factor. “My Mom wouldn’t miss a game no matter where I go but it would be a lot easier for her to just drive fifteen minutes up the road.”

In addition to the pitches he hears from TCU, family and friends, he gets a double-dose when one of his close friends, Wyatt Harris, is already committed to the Frogs. Ellison says he hears plenty not only from Wyatt, but also from Wes and Hunter Harris, who are already on campus.

“Every day,” Ellison said laughing. “It’s pretty funny. He’s always messing around about it. They always talk with me about going to TCU.”

With several programs to choose from, Ellison says he doesn’t plan to draw out the process for a long time. In fact, he hopes to have a decision very soon.

“I kind of want to make a commit in the next couple of weeks or right after spring ball,” Ellison said.

When asked what schools currently stand out, Ellison lists TCU, Notre Dame and Penn State as schools that interest him. Additionally, he would like to take a visit to Washington, who offered last week.

Ellison is rated as the No. 34 weakside defensive end in the nation according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Seems like a great kid and great family but very confused about the process. He tells different things to different writers on a weekly basis. Sounds like he's getting a little overwhelmed with the process and the default will be staying home and going to TCU.

Funny thing about that response is, he was planning to visit UW and PSU just last week, lol. Either his geography skills are terrible or he's having a difficult time with the process. In these situations I would usually stress that the prospect take a step back and maybe just explain to all parties that he's not going to focus on recruiting until he's comfortable. However, it sounds like he thinks the best way to handle that is committing to the school down the street.

This is exactly right. So either the TCU reporter asked the question in a way to get that type of response, or Colt wants to visit Washington and Penn State for a free trip.

It would make zero logical sense to eliminate ND (if distance is an issue) and then go to Washington and Penn State which are even further away. If distance is really an issue as the TCU reporter is implying, why are all of this top schools far away except for TCU.

Having read the article, nowhere does Colt dismiss Notre Dame as an option.

In fact, he has said nothing but positives. If ND still wants him, this battle is not over.

Or maybe he's just a nice kid that is telling the reporters what they want to hear. Not everything you read is fact. Whether it's coming from the horses mouth or not.

I feel pretty comfortable taking someone at their word. It's not like I'm putting words in his mouth or reading tea leaves. Probably the single best approach we could take to recruiting is taking them at their word. That way, they get to dictate the information we discuss. You know, the point of the board and all. And it's fine if he is confused, was just stating that it's pretty obvious he is.

Haven't heard much from him lately. Are they still pursuing him? Still see CBs to TCU

Multiple analysts have mentioned that Colt Ellison wants to stay close to home and, while ND is still recruiting him, all signs point to TCU being the choice sooner rather than later.

From what I’ve read. We’re still recruiting him. And he’s still visiting schools. Was at Ole Miss last weekend after they offered. But it sounds like not much has changed. Won’t go far from home.

Deciding in the next couple of weeks. Just got back from his visit to Washington.

https://247sports.com/college/washington/Article/Decision-Coming-Very-Soon-For-UW-Pass-Rushing-Target-119381080/

One of the top BUCK linebacker targets on Washington's list visited over the weekend and Aledo (Tx.) LB/DE Colt Ellison told Dawgman.com he plans to make a decision in the next few weeks.

"It was a great visit," Ellison said of his trip to Seattle over the weekend. "My dad came with me and we both had a great time.

"The 'Built For Life' message they have really impressed me a lot. That really stood out to me. Also the campus and the school. The area is beautiful up there and the academics there are really impressive and they really sold me on the Foster Business School and how good that is."

Unfortunately, Ellison's mother was unable to make the trip, but she isn't going to stand in the way of him choosing the Huskies if they are the school that he chooses.

"She was in Detroit with my sisters watching volleyball," Ellison said. "She's fine with me going far away from home if that's my choice, so it won't be something that holds me back (from committing)."

Ellison's host on his trip was Tevis Bartlett and he said sitting down with Chris Petersen and Pete Kwiatkowski was also eye-opening.

"(Bartlett) was a good guy, I liked him a lot," Ellison noted. "I also got the chance to meet Julius (Irvin) who had just enrolled there and he was a really cool guy.

"Coach Petersen is a great coach and you can tell he really cares about his players not just because they play football, but he also wants them to have success in their life after football.

"Coach Kwiatkowski and I sat down and watched film and he showed me clips of how they use their pass-rushers and where he saw me fitting in if I went there.

"I could definitely see myself fitting in well there and fitting into their defense. Washington is definitely one of my favorites."

Also in consideration are TCU and Notre Dame, schools he's already visited.

"I'm planning to decide here in the next week or two, so pretty soon," Ellison said. "I'm looking at the academics and also the fit and the coaching staff. It's all pretty important to me, so I'm looking for the overall fit and if I can see myself living there for the next four years."

Ellison is one of the top pass-rushers in Texas and that is what has drawn the interest of so many schools. As a junior this past season, he totaled 13.5 sacks to go along with 92 tackles and 18 tackles-for-loss while helping to lead his team to a 15-1 record and a berth in the 5A State Finals.

We'll have more on Ellison after he announces his decision.

Just noticed Colt Ellison's new ratings. I could be wrong but I believe his original scores were something like

247: 87
Rivals: 5.7
ESPN: NR

Now looks like...

247: 87
Rivals: 5.8
ESPN: 80

When 247 wakes up (now that he's committed to TCU doubtful they do) he should be a 4 star across the board which means an excellent get for TCU. I would say hopefully ND can get him on a visit in the fall to a game, but the kid has already been to ND for a game and again for a spring OV so I think the flipping looks extremely doubtful.
