Pretty sure they don't get to eat for free at campus restaurants. Even after 2014 I'm pretty sure they just had normal flex points for those restaurants just like the rest of the students. I think where the rule change came into effect was them getting food outside of meals. For example the common area for student athletes always had tons of snacks and food. I think before the rule change there were more limits on what athletes could get for free outside of meals.

It sounds like the schools get to determine what's in/out, and it's different at every place. The article I posted mentions Oregon/Wisconsin got to select.

I have never heard of a school giving unlimited access to on campus restaurants that are outside of dining halls. Everything mentioned in that article is either a dining hall, training table, or snack station. That is what athletes can get for free. At ND they will get their meals at training table which has a separate area where they use their ID like normal students do with the regular dining halls. They also have areas in the weight room, JACC, their lounges, and probably their locker rooms where they can get snacks such as granola bars, protein bars and shakes, fruit, mixed nuts, etc. All of this can be controlled by the nutrition staff so they know the athletes are eating good food. They would not want them to have unlimited access to fast food. I believe since they are technically on meal plans because they live on campus they also have access to flex points like normal students and they can use those at restaurants, but its not unlimited.

It could be less because he could receive normal financial aid just like any other student. So it would really depend on how much the family could afford.

I haven't spoken up because my experience was at BYU. But basically we were given a swipe every day for a free meal somewhere ON campus (even the fast food places at our food court), as well as the restaurant by the athlete building called Legends Grill, or the Cafeteria which was basically buffet style.

We also got free breakfast given to us. Nothing special, some fruit, granola bars, protein shake, and thats about it.

The football team got a 2 hour block all to themselves in LEgends Grill and they all ate as much as they could in that time. I was always jealous of that.

But that's it. So basically one free meal for us, and breakfast. Talking with other schools they usually did something similar. But I have no connections to ND and knowing what goes on there.

This was what they had, but in 2014 the NCAA rule trumped it all. It's eat wherever, whenever, as often as you want, and in between semesters. Doesn't have to be at a designated dining hall, doesn't have to be capped at 14 a week, etc.

It's a big difference in benefit.

I'd like to see them try that at Ruth Chris or St. Elmo's.

Waiter...."Here's your bill sir."

Tillery....."I'm a student athlete on scholarship. I get to eat wherever, whenever as often as I like at no charge."

Waiter......"Oh, of course Mr. Tillery. Let me check with my manager.

Waiter......."Mr. Tillery, I spoke to the manager. He said to pay the $115.00 or we will be forced to call the police."

Tillery........"WTF!? Koon said it was okay."

Waiter......."Koon said it was okay? Mr. Tillery, why didn't you say so in the first place? Please disregard the bill, we'll take care of it."

Tillery......"Thanks so much. Koon's always right."

Waiter....."Anything else I can do for you sir?"

Tillery......."Could I get a filet mignon to go?"

Waiter......."As long as Koon says it's okay, then why not?"

I posted this in the DL thread last month I believe.
It's about the DL improving. Included is Elston taking the DL to discount burger night on Thursdays.

This kid deserves his athletic scholarship so if he is willing to give that up for the team on his own doing, then that's awesome. If this is being proposed to him from the University that's a shame.

Congrats Jack

It's not and never has been
From what I've heard he applied for Lilly as a precaution basically. Hearing he will more than likely let the runner- up have it.
Coach Kelly and coach Lea were at his school today.

Maybe their is a kid on the team whose dad sold his business for a billion dollars recently? He could give up his scholarship ...

His scholarship will be done after the last Notre Dame game is played this season.

If he doesn't win Mr Football, it's a shame. But Elliot, Bell and Charlie Spegal had great years too... and go to the media darlings in Indy.

Good to see my lil homie from City make the list. Chase Triplett is way undervalued and I'll bet Nick Holt makes him into an NFL caliber player. Could've/would've been Irish in a different era.

Crus - why didn't Elliot get more interest from bigger schools.

He's maybe 5-7. Nick Hill is the taller of the two coaches in the picture below, he's 6-3.

But he'll end up at a MAC school, they just started offering this month.

I get ya, my boy Tarik Cohen is just 5-6.

I can tell you this, he had so many highlights in his 3000+ yd season that he has 20+ minute 2 part Highlight film(s). Ain't never seen that before.

Kid is a tough tackle. I'm gonna bet some teams like IU and PU are going to regret not going after him.

That is what I was thinking too. Has to be the first Indiana Mr. Football from a 1A school. I can't think of any others...

Apparently he's the first ever.

First of all, congrats to JAck and congrats to the voters. Well deserved!

In regards to 1A winners...

A couple of those Sheridan legends deserved it. I don't know who beat Nick Zachary as a Sr. but they didn't deserve it. Zachary won 3 or 4 1A state championships.

Also, back in the 80's, Sheridan's Brett Law would have won the award but they didn't start giving it out until after he was gone. He probably deserved to win it twice. Those were the days when it was Sheridan vs whoever came out of Michiana, Jimtown or Bremen.

How Mr. Football is selected

Sixty high school coaches vote for Mr. Football and the Mr. Football position award winners at the annual Indiana Football Coaches Association all-state meeting. There is one vote for each sectional and two at-large votes in each class. That comes out to 60 total votes — 10 for each class. Here is a breakdown of how each class voted between Kiser and Bell:

Class A – Kiser 10, Bell 0

Class 2A – Kiser 9, Bell 1

Class 3A – Bell 4, Kiser 1

Class 4A – Kiser 3, Bell 3

Class 5A – Kiser 3, Bell 3

Class 6A – Bell 6, Kiser 4

Kiser cleaned up in the voting at the Class A and 2A levels. Bell did not similarly dominate the voting in the larger classes enough to make up for it. Historically, it does not happen that way. There had never been a Class A Mr. Football before Kiser. Jaylon Smith of Fort Wayne Luers, a 2A school, won Mr. Football in 2012. Otherwise, it has been 4A, 5A and 6A players to win Mr. Football since the turn of the decade

Googled if for you - apparently Daniel Wodicka out of W. Lafayette won that year who I've never heard of? Ended up going to John Hopkins. Zachary won 3 titles btw - '05, '06 and '07.
