It was the right move for the program. Letting ND see what they really have in a guy on roster for Fall 2024 was the right move for the program and for that I applaud Sam for stepping away but still being there to support the team.

Opting out of a bowl to play in an even more meaningless senior bowl will never make sense to me
Have to disagree, the Senior Bowl is a great way to create connections with NFL staffs and help draft prospects especially for QB's

If you look at some of the odd young names that have started this year in the NFL
Jaren Hall, Aiden O'Connell, Easton Stick, Bailey Zappe, Tommy DeVito, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, Tyson Bagent to name a few...
My guess is a few of these guys were at thier respected Senior Bowl games or something similar, and showed something that impressed the team they played for this season.

Of course, they could have just taken them because of thier college tape, but the chance to see someone practice for almost an entire week and interview, etc... is a valuable tool for any NFL staff.
I can see why players (especially QB's) find it more beneficial to them then a bowl game when it comes to improving thier draft stock.

It’s been decades ago but I still remember Craig Erickson (QB at Miami) tearing his ACL in the Senior Bowl (or one of the two games for NFL prospects…I think the other was called the Blue-Gray Bowl).

That said, I do agree it sounds like it’s wise for bubble guys or low draft picks to participate and get valuable insight & exposure.

I am going to always root for Hartman. He made the best out of his 1 year here at ND. I think our QB room going forward is healthy. Angeli got to mentor him, have to give kudos to Hartman for help on getting Leonard, and I can see Carr becoming popular like Hartman was.

If we only had a better OC when he was here....

Thanks Sam!

Irish Illustrated guys were very honest in their disappointment with him yesterday. Said he lacked focus. There was a little questioning about his commitment. They said casual fans will think he did a great job. Most people who follow closely will understand he underachieved. I think that's pretty fair. Wonder what the staff actually thought of him. I hope we are done with transfer QBs for awhile after Leonard

In his defense, he had a woefully barren group of receivers that only got thinner 4 games into the season.

Losing Thomas, Colzie and then having Greathouse hobbled for most of the year, then losing Evans really hurt.

It was basically Tyree, Flores, Faison and Merriweather for much of the year. A converted RB, 2 true freshmen and a struggling sophomore. Not gonna find many QBs succeed with that, plus having a very inexperienced play caller.

I agree that he was in a tough spot, but Tim P also brought up the drive late in the OSU game. He turned the wrong way on the hand off - lack of focus - and then missed the throw on the screen by not getting it over the defender - who had tape of him making that play and Sam should have been aware.

I think both can be true. Sam missed some things - including a good receiving group.

Baton Rouge/LSU morning show "Off The Bench" is live in Mobile, AL for the Senior Bowl. The show is hosted by two former Tigers - Jacob Hester and T-Bob Hebert:
  • Jacob Hester was the former starting running back for the 2007 NC team and played for both the Chargers and Broncos;
  • T-Bob Hebert was the former starting center and was on that great 2011 team that lost in the NC to Alabama (despite previously beating them in Tuscaloosa .... :sneaky:). T-Bob's father is Bobby Hebert, the "Cajun Cannon" and former QB for the Saints and Atlanta Falcons.
Anyways, they had a 10-minute interview with Sam Hartman this morning. Nothing earth-shattering, but Hartman discusses both WF, the slow mesh, and his time at ND. I thought y'all would want to have a listen:

Kiper put out a top 10 list of QBs in for the upcoming draft. Sam not on it, but Joe Milton is. gotta be kidding me.

It is a really deep top end of the QB list. Penix 5th and Bo Nix sixth.

Penix's game against Michigan certainly didn't help his draft stock, but to have McCarthy over him is laughable.

Regarding Joe Milton, you've got to think that he's only in the top 10 due to his sheer athletic abilities. "But he can throw it a country mile!" Yeah, so could Jamarcus Russell while on one knee...Russell was infinitely better than Milton in college, had greater athletic abilities, and we all saw how he turned out at the Raiders.

Sadly, for Hartman, in my novice opinion, he's a day 3 or undrafted free agent guy. NFL teams obviously questioned his abilities at WF due to their unique "slow mesh offense" and the fact that he was turnover prone. Hartman's time at ND and in Parker's offense didn't help improve his draft stock. You could make an argument that it had an adverse impact. That said, I never thought my Saints would draft Ian Book in the 4th rd...I would have said he's at best a day 3 guy as well. So, maybe someone will take a chance? I'd take Hartman 10/10 times over Book.

Seems to be the consensus when it comes to most lists. PFF, for example, has Joe Milton 10th and Hartman 11th among QBs.

I have consistently seen lists of QBs where Hartman isn't in the Top 10 and has Milton, Travis and Rattler ahead of him. Doesn't mean much of anything as it's punditry. All NFL front offices are different. Someone sees value in Hartman, they could snag him later on like how Book was.

It's also to his advantage to perhaps not be drafted so he can sign as a URFA and have the ability to choose where he has a better chance to make a roster.

Wow thank goodness he skipped the bowl game. I hope he has that job resume squared away.
That's a good point. Why skip the bowl only to play in the Senior? Is it to prove you can play with a new roster that you have no chemistry with? Are you that much less likely to take an injury? Seems like a big risk to hurt your stock as a QB, it's probably hard to get a rhythm with new WRs.

Some people say it’s a good time to develop relationships with NFL teams, and that’s probably true.

But going 7/25 with a pick probably ruined all of that.

It's like a mini-combine and guys get drafted based on Senior Bowl practice and preformance. Lots of GMs and scouts present who put stock in that week, good for networking of all kinds. Some guys with NFL aspirations may feel, for better or worse, that Senior Bowl > Team's Bowl. These are just new paradigms that could also change.

Sam Hartman’s gonna be fine in life, lol. Some of y’all acting like he’s gonna be downgraded to Mickey Ds. Besides, these all star games usually suck anyway.
No Mickey Ds but late round draft pick to undrafted. Could be this years Mr. Irrelevant which worked out for one Super Bowl QB😉

He was already leaning in that direction as far as draft stock. However, I don’t think he’s done completely yet. If he doesn’t land on a team as a late round sleeper pick, he can parlay his personality into something sports related.
Hire him to replace Garrett
