Let's also give credit to coaching/game plan in this highlight. First play of the game no one knew Shrader was that banged up but Smith stays in his gap and doesn't over pursue leading to a potential big scramble up the middle. That was obviously built into the game plan because there's no way a big man would stay there and not chase the QB when left unblocked.

To be fair, it wasn't like he played that year and it counted against him.

Essentially the Ivy League opted out of football and that was effectively his redshirt year, because he played more than 4 games in '18, '19 and '21.
