It doesn’t seem right to me that a family can go into large amounts of debt as someone they love and cherish fights off a life or death disease.

Not trying to make this political, but it just baffles me.

I hope they get the financial assistance they need and that she recovers.

Not true as a rule. MANY good companies (not necessarily big companies) still provide great health insurance. I paid @ $20k cash for some cancer procedures in 2021. I've had 5x the procedures done since my new company's health insurance kicked-in last December and paid $2000. And that's going to Mayo.

Ok, but is the monthly cost of the insurance worth it? Do some of the lower paying positions have trouble paying that cost?

Actually no. The crazy cost of healthcare is due to the physicians and the greedy corporations that own the health care industry. Why do you think Pharm reps dish millions of dollars to wine and dine the head physicians of the hospitals? To buy their extremely overpriced pharmas and prescribe these high priced medications over lower, more reasonable ones. Also, the cost of the healthcare, non pharma, is insane. My best friend is a PA and he says time and time again how unnecessary tests and procedures are done all the time to pad the coffers of the clinics and hospitals.

You can state nearly the same about the cost of education in America but that is for another story.

No doubt about it……and the fact that much of healthcare is now throwing medication at a symptom rather than properly teach people to be proactive with their own health. Walk in with a problem, walk out with pills. Obesity, being sedentary and eating a poor diet are greatly influencing healthcare costs that we are all having to bear. I wonder what would happen if health insurance rates were set just like all other insurance rates?

This is painfully short-sighted and incorrect.

The cost of healthcare is due to the physicians? How so? Are you saying they are setting prices and insurance just pays it? How do you think prices are set? How much have you worked in healthcare?

Like most difficult problems, there is no single cause.

There is massive litigation in the healthcare world. So if the providers don't cover their asses and order enough tests, they are left on an island when it comes time to step into the court. Most providers begrudgingly order the required tests when 80+% of the time it's unnecessary. Most of the physicians I know are not money hungry although they all make good livings. One friend is 3 years out as a trauma surgeon and he's still over $100K in debt.

One is a highly-trained ENT (specialized enough to be the center destination for certain procedures). He makes good money but he's the most conscientious person I know.

I've worked in healthcare for 12+ years, been a part of many meetings looking for ways to cut costs, improve the experience, etc. There are negotiations at every level of healthcare, from purchasing, to hiring, to which process needs the most improvement, to how much payment will be received from various insurances.
