it has been talked about....he thought his role was going to be bigger and then when the emergence of mayer happened....he was going to be back to what, block again and see his stock drop

He's a very good blocker, but has A LOT of work to do as a pass receiver. He is a perfect example of a player who would genuinely improve his draft stock by staying another year.

FULL DISCLOSURE: The only x-factor here that I'm unaware of is this year vs. next year's TE draft class.

Very inconsistent as a receiver early on in the season especially. Still think he has a lot of potential and would be happy to have him back

His stock can’t be high enough to leave early can it? The issue is he may not be able to increase his stock much next year with Mayer on board, but it isn’t going to get worse. IMO he is deciding between possibly improving his draft stock by staying another year and having a productive year catching the ball, or having a similar year with the same draft grade. Seems boneheaded to not give yourself a chance for improvement.

There's also the risk of injury lowering his stock. Hopefully ND can insure him against that to make the decision easier, but we don't hear much about that outside of potential first rounders.

Unless he gets picked by a handful of teams that would use him well (Ravens), I would have same pass catching concerns

I'd actually think he's very likely to leave regardless and transfer to be put in a situation where he's used for more than blocking. Idk if going pro is his best option, but leaving to play in an offense where he can be featured in the pass game more is a possibility imo.

There is an injury risk, but unless catastrophic, it may not do much to his stock depending on where his grade is. If he’s a late round grade he can’t drop/slide too far back. IMO there is definitely more to gain, then there is to lose from returning another year.

He could make a lot more money if he came back next year and improved his pass-catching. He double-clutches too many passes to be considered a finished product for the NFL IMO. I think that would require Rees & BK convincing him he’ll be a focal point of the offense in regards to pass catching vs what he was involved in this season.

talk about catch 22. hes screwed if they transfer because he doesnt play them, then loses upper classman to early entry if he does.

Guess he should in fact play those who give us the best opportunity to win - what a thought!

I can't envision the world where TT is a high (1-4 round) draft choice. Guys who can block are just not that hard to find. Typically players don't leave after 3 years for the draft if they're going in the 3rd day or lower unless they are unhappy with the program.

Waiting and wondering on this one. Seems hard to understand that our Junior class which has gone 30-2 in the regular season could be comprised of a bunch of unhappy guys but if they keep leaving for dubious reasons something is up. But what?

Agree 100%. Cannot imagine this guy being a drafted pro if he hasnt proven to be a great pass catcher, which I havent seen yet. Not saying he cant be but from my understanding, his main value to ND has been his blocking.

He is a very big asset to this team in the run game. Unfortunately he had some dropped passes and again unfortunately he had a QB that probably missed him some. If he thinks he is going to get draft probably before the 5th round he fell down and bumped his head because he probably doesn’t get drafted at all. It’s a shame he sees this as a short term gain.

I wish Tommy the best of luck. It was fun watching him block the past two years. If Smyth was a 4th round pick then I think Tommy could be picked in the 4th round.

Wow. 2021 should absolutely be a rebuilding year to prep for another run at 2022 and 2023.

Put all the young pups in and let them take their lumps.

From my perspective, Tremble is ideal for that catch passing fullback role that Kyle Juszczyk played so well in San Francisco 49ers. I just don't know how many NFL teams properly use the role.

4th round....but has had a decent NFL career. Tremble would be lucky to have a similar one. Tommy started to use him more in the FB slot in goal line situations, but that is where he excels not in the downfield pass catching role . He won't make it in the NFL as a stereotypical TE role. I hope it works for him, but think it is far from a sure thing.

It really miffs me that we can't seem to hold onto guys who had a lot to gain by returning.

Tremble was a guy who could improve his draft stock by a huge amount if he improved his pass catching. Same with Banks, but at least I understand that since he's older than the typical senior.

Meanwhile, other programs are holding onto guys who were assured early rounders. PSU managed to retain Jahan Dotson, despite their dumpster fire of a season.

It's probably hard to sell Tremble on that role in the offense when you Mayer's getting larger and larger as the season went on.

The downside to playing freshmen, LOL.
