Welcome aboard George. Extremely excited to have ya!

Get the guys in here that want to be.

This is where I'm at. We know that pressing to keep a kid that isn't 100% usually doesn't turn out well.

I give the kid a ton of credit. It takes stones to come in the year after our 2017 TE haul. He believes in himself.

As a sophomore (after being redshirted his freshman year), he will be at worst a high ankle sprain away from being in the 2 TE packages. Those nagging injuries are a 99% probability. Some think Kmet is going to be a Flex, if that happens Takacs is really sitting in good shape. My guess is he'll have the opportunity to be the #1 or #2 TE at TE U for his last two season in South Bend as long as:

A.) he stays ahead of the younger TE's

B.) he doesn't leave for the NFL with time on his clock or

C.) BK isn't replaced by CK who'd ask Balis why there are all these skinny OT on the roster.

Not to take anything away from him, but I don't think it's quite as hard as you might think. On a team that is going to be running a lot of 2 TE sets, he could be the 3rd TE as soon as his freshman year, and at worst case scenario, his sophomore year. We'll probably be, regularly, playing 3-4 different TE's each game.

Luatua and Smythe gone. Weishar and Alize could be. My guess is that if Alize leaves, Weishar is asked back, but that's not a guarantee, and either way he's gone by George's sophomore year. The TE depth will thin out real quick. With that said, Brock, Kmet, and Takacs will be an insane TE depth chart.

At this point, I am very confident that Weishar will be asked back, one way or another, but I agree with your take.

Inside info you care to share? Because, as of today, what we have seen from him, if Alize comes back, I don't see why you would. If he improves, then maybe.

Haven't you seen his film, he's a prolific receiving threat. You don't just let that walk!

The reason is veteran depth and a roster constantly hovering below 85. He is not an issue, has some talent, and will have 4 years experience. If is motivated and wants to come back, I don't see them pushing him out.

But I also don't see any chance that Alize comes back unless he is injured.

Depth is important if we really plan on going to 2 TE sets. If someone gets banged up and needs to sit out a half or two, an experienced 5th year is a good option.

IF Alize comes back, I see very little chance you are bringing back a 5th year TE with virtually no production, to take reps from the other 3. In this scenario, Alize is probably never coming off the field, and you don't need 4 guys behind him. Also, the staff is being much more aggressive in recruiting numbers and transfers (in and out) I'd bet that continues. Use it someplace else.

I agree with the bolded.

If Kmet and Wright are as good as people think they are, (from what we've seen from Weishar so far) you are not giving him reps over them. Wright will be in the system long enough to surpass him, IMO.

This could change with this upcoming season, I won't deny that, but as of today, he's a non-productive depth player, in front of some really promising talent.

That's my point. In 2018, we'll have Brock Wright, Cole Kmet, probably Tackas, and maybe Mack. If we are committed to 2 TE sets, that's not good enough IMO.

If the Mack returns, we'll have a 3 man rotation of 2 sophomores and a Senior. If one of them gets injured, especially early in the season, I'd rather have a 5th year than a true freshman pick up the slack.

If there is no return of the Mack, we'll have a 3 man rotation of 2 sophomores and a freshman without Weishar. That's not good.

Precisely why I said, if Alize doesn't come back, then Weishar will be asked back without a doubt.

The rest we just disagree on.

Hey guys, greatly appreciate the updates. I think we should have these updates, for now, going into the Opening thread. That way we get all the action in one spot. From there we can move it if it spurs more specific conversation about the prospect.

Believe mods have said he's not the fastest or most explosive TE so seeing him running in shorts and a tank top won't change those things. But it's not like he is slow and when you are 6'7 and can even run a little bit you don't need those attributes to be effective.

Also Long loves to use two TE sets so I think we will see him lined up more as an in line blocker more then we will see him detached. I think that's what makes Wright so awesome is he can do both at potentially a very high level. Don't think we will see Kmet in line blocking to much. I think he is the perfect detached TE and will be used very similar to how Eifert was used. But like Eifert, Kmet will get his hands dirty and become more of a blocker as he progresses in this offense. Remember Eifert became a very effective blocker when it mattered as his career at ND progressed. I think many people just thought he was a WR in a TE's body but he was the perfect TE for today's offense and the offense ND wanted to run.

what's the deal with that? it's not like the slate is overflowing with live sport this time of year

Wiz is taking advantage of his Magic Kingdom discounts so much that Disney mandated cuts to ESPN in order to find that money.
