Is it that implausible that the staff just isn't all that high on Henry? Coach on Power Hour for example doesn't seem very high on him and in fact likes Wimbush better.

While certainly Henry is a great prospect, maybe the staff doesn't think he is on the level the services seem to think he is. This early in the cycle, and with the way Golson and the offense look they might just think they can find a prospect they like better later. The inherent risk of taking a highly touted California quarterback this early - only to watch him flip later - can't help either.

Just sucks that he could have been a linchpin in this class. Having Winbush is great, but having him 1/2 year earlier would have been even better. I was excited to have Henry more for his potential effect of recruiting than his potential impact on the field. I think Wiltfong wasn't far off by saying ND could potentially have the #1 class for 2016, but I don't see it happening without one of the 2016 QB studs. Who knows, maybe Pass or Patterson can be that guy. I just don't see Pass leaving the south. Hopefully Patterson's Midwest routes pay dividends for the Irish.

When I first saw the announcement date, I thought for sure he was ND. I was bragging to a coworker about the QB situation, and then I paused because I wondered why he would commit with so much depth. My coworker even questioned the commitment. So, yeah, in retrospect, even without his commitment, I think ND is good for the next 4-5 years.

FSU 2015 - Francois & Locksley
2014 - Cosentino
2013 - Franklin (IMO, the same as Kizer)

Pretty comparable IMO.

This is the other part that makes me wonder about the situation. If Henry is worried about our QB roster, it's not like it is that much different at FSU.

I guess we just wait and see.

On Henry, he was a little disappointed that ND decided to take Wimbush and that he cooled on ND a little at that time. The staff seemed to as well. Though both sides have stayed in communication it doesn't seem as though the ND staff is wanting to lock down a QB commit at this time for 2016 and a commitment from Henry would come as a surprise to those inside the Gug.

"In Kelley We Trust."

We really don't know what the staff is thinking or what their plans are, but if what Lucky passed along is true, then I'm thinking the staff doesn't see him as a huge must get. If they have indeed cooled on him and he surprises everyone and picks ND, does BK still take him? "Inquiring minds want to know!" (old National Enquirer commercial reference) for you youngsters.

Depending on a few things, such as Golson not leaving early, or Malik not transrerring, I cannot remember the last time ND had 4 QB's the roster on scholarship. Anyone have an idea???

We already have 4 QB's on scholarship. Next year we could have 5 if VanGorder retains his scholarship.

This could work out well for us still, if we land Pass or Patterson will we really be that upset. I know many of us including myself prefer Pass over them all

I not saying we wont land either of them but i highly doubt it. I wouldn't leave out that another prospect that isn't in the bright lights that get attention later on will problem land here.

I'm not too concerned about missing on Henry. I watched a game of his that was streamed online and came away unimpressed. From what I remember he over-threw a lot of his receivers and did more with his legs than with his arm that probably wouldn't translate quite as well to the next level. And to be clear, I'm not saying Henry isn't good or that he couldn't be good in our system...but to me, he didn't look like a top ranked QB at all. And I believe his competition wasn't very good in that game either. To his credit though, he put the team on his back and marched them down the field for the game winning drive at the end of the fourth...and did so mostly with his legs.

And before anyone says I'm just downplaying Henry because he likely isn't coming here, I posted all these thoughts as I was watching that game in this thread a couple months back.

It would definitely be nice to have him in the class because he could have just had a bad game when I watched but I'm not devastated if we don't land him. And even though he maybe just played a bad game you could still see he had a lot of good tools to work with that I'm sure Kellly and Lafleur could have worked out. He was just very inaccurate and inconsistent. Good arm strength though and surprising athletic ability with his legs that honestly reminded me a lot of Everett.

I'm also with Koon (and probably a few others) on this one, in that I like Wimbush better than Henry.

I haven't watched a full game of Jawan Pass of Patterson's yet but hopefully one of those guys is a little more impressive than Henry and we have a legit shot with them.

Again...I'm not saying Henry is not good. Just that the one full game I saw him play (against low level competition) was unimpressive and not what I expected to see from a top ranked QB. Could've just been a bad game.

Hopefully we can snag another top QB of the ones mentioned or maybe one we haven't even heard of yet. Just remember that we have almost a year and a half to go til 2016 signing day still. I'm confident in the staff's ability to find a future QB with so much time still to go.

FWIW, I know some here as well as on the BGI board are skeptical that we'd cool on Henry. However, Loy confidently stated in the TV thread that indeed the ND staff cooled on Henry and likes other prospects more.

-It seems as though Pass, while he may be a tough pull, is being rated higher.

The worst part of losing out on Henry is his name on the marquee of the #TheGoldenHaul'16 recruiting class. That is a very important aspect of recruiting no doubt but this is much like the Tillery situation in that you can't expect him to play much until he's an upperclassman. There are positions in the class of '16 where a 5 star recruit can come in and play valuable minutes over their first 2 years, (positions like SS, CB and RB) but QB and OT aren't two of them. I am not saying you don't need them for the long term health of the program. You're not at the top rung until you have 4 and 5 star recruits leaving your program because they can't get on the field. That's one of those good problems to have. Stack that talent and stack it deep.

I've seen a number of excellent QB's this season here in LA/OC/IE... Malik Henry ranks near the bottom of the pack when it comes to the All American talent this season. Josh Rosen, KJ Costello, Sam Darnold and Blake Barnett all have looked better for sure. He's definitely looked better than Travis Waller, who I am THRILLED didn't pick the Irish, Henry is probably closest to Ricky Town, though I'd take Town right now.

What I don't get is how he's rated the #1 Pro QB and Costello is #4 per 247 Composite. KJ Costello looks like the next Andrew Luck. It's not even close between these two.

If I could have any of these guys on ND, I'd take Darnold. Watch him pass up everybody at SC by the end of his 2nd year.

In the end, I hope Henry still picks ND just to help stack talent over the next year but if he never makes it to South Bend, it won't be the end of the world. ND will be in the playoffs next year and have a great chance to win it all, they will have pick of the litter during signing day and will be set up perfect to get the best QB in the class of '17... who btw is from the Indianapolis area and has already visited ND.

Costello is my #1 QB want for '16. After that it would be Pass>Henry>Patterson.

Sorry, I wasn't counting Monty as a scholly QB. Nothing against him, but if the shit hits the fan, he'd hardly ever see PT. As for Massa being on scholly, I didn't think he was playing QB at the time of Rees, Hendrix, Kiel and Golson, which, Kiel transferred after he wasn't going to be the starter.

If the staff cooled on Henry I can't imagine it has anything to do with Wimbush. I assume they were recruiting Henry when they had Barnett committed. Maybe Henry hasn't progressed as much as they thought he would from his sophmore year to his junior year.

FWIW, Loy did an interview with the Observer where he said that ND's focus at recruiting the QB position is on Wimbush and being patient with the 2016 class.

That was from Loy, his sources are telling him that.

if Loy said that, ND is REALLY in trouble.

the guy always has ND as the leader, and didn't he even predict Malik would commit over his official weekend?

We're not in trouble because for whatever reason, ND backed off of Malik. If we were putting in a ton of work to land him, then we'd be in trouble.
