Irish linebackers coach Mike Elston made a big impact down the stretch in Kelly’s recruitment. Their time together on campus during his December official visit and their talks leading up to Signing Day made this a close race.

“I think he’s really cool,” said Kelly. “I only knew him for the last few months, but we really developed a strong bond. I could really see myself playing for him. Honestly, if I went out there and visited a lot earlier than my official visit, we probably would have connected even more and who knows what would have happened. I just didn’t think it worked out right now and this wasn’t the right time for me to be there.”

I used to believe it is worth the effort to go after all top 5-star kids but I'm on this train now. So tired of seeing all of these recruits talk about how important education is and then NEVER pick ND. No one will ever convince me that Oklahoma will provide as strong of a degree and network as Notre Dame. Have we ever landed a Fresno kid? Let's put the time into recruiting someone that we actually have a chance to land.
