“Notre Dame just offered, so I’ll take an official visit there,” said Stovall. “I talked to Coach Denbrock when I first got offered. He said that he liked the way I move around. He said I’m a special player. He said I can be used as a running back, or in the slot or in the return game.

“It’s a huge offer. I like their tradition with the school. I’ve been watching them since I was young. I have plenty of research to do with them still, but it’s a part of keeping my options open.”

“It’s a very strong commitment,” said Stovall of his commitment to USC. “I just want to keep my options open just in case anything happens or changes.”

“I’m taking classes this summer, so I won’t be able to take any unofficial visits this summer,” said Stovall. “My plan is to get ahead, so I can graduate early and enroll in January. Doing that gives me an extra six months on any other freshman. It gives me a chance to get in the playbook and get acclimated to the school and campus. I’ll take all of my official visits though.”

My buddy is a Dean at his school. I would say that I will tell him to get in his ear about ND, but he is a USC fan.

First time I heard about this kid. Interesting prospect that I would love to steal from USC. Obviously he's not completely solid if he's talking about a trip to South Bend this fall.

His sister was a student of mine last year for geometry (different high school less than 5 miles away)...Paraclete is the only catholic private school in the area, so I think he'd really like the feel of campus if he were to visit. I'll try to find out just how solid he is in his commitment, but most of the kids out here are definitely USC fans...

Per Ryan Bartow, he's in the process of scheduling an OV to ND. His sources make it sound that USC and Melquise will part ways at some point in the process. Mainly due to his desired position. Melquise and his camp prefer he play more of a Slot WR role and USC wants him at APB. Utah, Washington State, Colorado and Oregon State are others schools that could receive OV's. He's been in contact the most with ND regarding potential OV's so it sounds like if decommitting is inevitable then we are in good shape.

Wiltfong and Loy both chimed in saying that Alloway is the preferred target here and don't have an answer to the question, would we take two?

ND is bordering on having too many WR's as it is lol.

If Fuller leaves after this year (to join Brown and Carlisle who will exhaust their eligibility), ND will still have 8 WR's heading into next season.

If you include Stepherson, Claypool and Alloway, that's 11 scholarship receivers playing for a team that we think will be run-oriented. AND there is a chance that other, elite guys could be added to the mix.

Every time I hear of a new receiver with interest, I get paranoid about future/potential transfers.

CRACKPOT CONSPIRACY THEORY: Brian Kelly is ready to throw the ultimate curveball and go to a true air raid offense. All of the receivers.

In general, I agree that from a scholarship allotment standpoint, we are going to need these other places. However, a couple of points I'd make.

I really don't think Claypool stays at WR.

Probably a bigger point, is this is the type of recruiting we need on defense. The reason we seem to have good depth at WR and on offense in general is because we continue to keep contact with players throughout the process. This is the type of recruiting we should have had throughout last cycle with S's. If we did, we wouldn't be in the current predicament we are if we lose some guys after this season.

Even if Claypool moves, there's still at logjam at WR.

And I agree that defensive "athlete" recruiting needs to match the offensive recruiting. It would be nice to see an over-abundance of offers out to safeties that have legit interest, and to worry about taking too many guys at one spot... but that doesn't change the fact that having so many receivers on a run-first team is bad news waiting to happen in terms of attrition.

You left out Robinson leaving. After all he is a 1st round projection next year

Ha, if the "experts" are correct, and Robinson leaves early, in addition to Fuller, and Claypool switches positions, I'd feel decent about 9 scholarship WR's. But that's about the limit of what I would feel comfortable with considering the offensive style of the team.

BUT I'm just a bro on the internet. I don't know how these kids feel about a crowded depth chart, and I don't know how the coaching staff feels about actually adding these guys that are in question. AND I'm a shell-shocked ND fan with football-induced PTSD.

So I get nervous when a position gets crowded.

I was just reading a recent story on Stovall and was thinking, I hope ND doesn't get drawn into recruiting both at the same time, for the same position. Alloway is the one ND needs. He's got a shifty wiggle that is elite. Stovall's problem is he's a tweener and this proves to me he and his camp know it. He's a better running back than anything else (a very very good one a rung below elite), he's put together at 180 but doesn't look like he can carry 200-210. Sounds like his camp knows this and carrying out of the backfield every down will be hard on his body and a move to the slot is his best bet.

Plus, his cousin is the #2 RB in the '17 class, Stephen Carr who's already committed to SC, he's 6-0, 200+ right now and will get the majority of the carries at Summit HS this year where he plays with Alloway. So that's SC's future workhorse.

SC isn't the right place for him if they want him splitting time in the backfield. He's smart to want to play the slot, especially with the NFL more open to spread weapons but if this comes down to an either/or... I'll take Alloway.

But make no mistake, if ND can make room for both (a completely different discussion) I'd stack it double deep and sort it out later.

I agree we should be a run-first team this year with Folston returning and the OL being what it is, but there is one guy (and he happens to be the one in charge) that likes to fling the ball around a whole lot. It will be a big adjustment for BK to call more running plays. I'll believe it when I see it.

BK has the ability to call plays perfectly for the way this team sets up, and he's done it before. This situation is pretty similar to when he had Zach Collaros at the top of the depth chart at UC for 5+ games in 2009. An extremely talented, natural running threat at QB that is also good enough as a passer to capitalize with play action. He let Collaros and the RB's carry the offense, and then when defenses were reeling from trying to stop the run and play-action games, he'd call for the up-tempo air-raid for a series and really beat the defense down.

This ND offense could be even more lethal than that... but like you, I'm also hesitant to go all-in at the moment. There have been some head-scratching instances of BK abandoning the run during his time at ND.

According to Pete. USC actually wanted to put him at cornerback, which was sort of the issue. Stovall wants to play offense.

One visit he wants is to ND.
