My current "dogmatic opinions":

1). our current class is absolutely great, and if we can hold, we will be fine; further optimization, however, is possible;
2). Kona and Tony are good players who are nowhere near the great asset of Big Lou, who IS, as stated by me ad nauseum, the key to our whole defense;
3). only Sheldon looks as if he could do somewhat of a Big Lou imitation, which is why they picked him quickly over Schutt, and only he can reasonably give us hope under current roster conditions of maintaining defensive dominance two seasons from now;
4). whereas Tony and Jarron and even Romeo and the rookies look like good prospects, none of them projects comfortably as an elite jumbo DT who can if needed wreak havoc at the nose;
5). DE is in great shape, especially with the highly desirable addition of AMuhammed sooner or later. We have all sorts of guys who look like potential line-disruptors and pass-rushers there;
6). everyone knows that Vanderdoes is a longshot --- no one is counting any chickens there. There IS however a legitimate desire and hope for a superior candidate for a jumbo D-Lineman;
7). IF Vanderdoes wanted to come, GRAB and hold on tight. Add AMuhammed. Then, if required [and given the fluctuating elements currently about concerning medical issues with some players and flip possibilities of one or two verbals, this might not be necessary], thank Carlo for his fine service, especially this season, and let him go. KEEP FOX;
8). concerns over leadership at LB are misplaced. Fox, Spond, and Shembo are returning veterans of VERY high quality. Grace will do well at MIKE, where no one can replace the MAN. Spond and Shembo are backed already with two guys who'd start nearly anywhere else. Both Rabasa and Moore can fill at MIKE and WILL if needed. Plus this gives players like Anzalone and Deeb closer smells of the field;
9). with the "Carlo spot" or another due to the factors above, add Redfield. with a flip, add Bryant. with a medical, add Treadwell ... or whatever ones fantasy is. Yes, Eddie Vanderdoes is a longshot --- but REALLY worth trying for.

Dogmas will change anytime this week.

Do you think we can keep Fox and get rid of Carlo?

[Glass half full guy].

I don't have the numbers in front of me, but this season I bet we've ran 4-3 over 3-4 about 2-1 ratio. Staff would make that very clear I'm sure. He agreed to meet with Denbrock. He's obviously interested to see what ND offers and what ND offers right now is unbeatable (granted, it depends on your priorities). Plus, his former, future teammate, Max Redfield (also a local boy) has jumped shipped and it looks like he's headed to ND. Plus, he's visiting ND (isn't he?). Cali boys don't visit ND, mid-winter, when there's not even a game to attend.

He'll use an official visit to ND IF LSU is filled up, and he's still waiting to see what their numbers are. That was his quote yesterday...not exactly reassuring.

He didn't state why he'd swap ND for LSU, at least it wasn't posted here. Maybe you know something I don't. Is the only reason he'd visit ND instead of LSU is if LSU is full?

What exactly does it mean for LSU to fill up? I'll go back and check my own thread from last year but IIRC they have brought in roughly 110 kids in the last 4 classes. They don't quite stick to the 25/85 rule.

Edit: Apparently LSU isnt quite as bad as I had thought, but they are still over the 85 limit.

School 2012 2011 2010 2009 Total
Alabama 27 27 29 27 110
Auburn 15 25 32 27 99
LSU 23 23 28 20 94

SCar 25 32 24 27 110
Non $EC
O$U 23 23 19 25 90
Texas 27 22 25 20 94

With Eddie Vanderdoes keep an eye out on EO. If EO leaves USC Eddie Vanderdoes probably will as well.

Yeah, Vanderdoes basically told Justin Hopkins as much. Is Orgeron going anywhere though? I haven't heard that a move is imminent.

This just makes me sick. I wish ESPN would show this stat during the NCG.

lol, took me a second too ... at first I thought Ebenezer Ogundeko, then I was like, what does he have to do with USC?

He's SC DL coach and recruiting coordinator ... like ALLGATOR I've heard that if he takes a job elsewhere, Vanderdoes is gone. Not sure if he is at all likely to leave though.

USC will be changing DC's and that could have an impact on what EO wants to do. If EO doesn't get the job or doesn't like the new DC he could decide to leave.

Somebody with a lot of responsibilty is getting fired this year. I like most would assume a coodinator or coach on the defense side of the ball. No way they dont make some shake ups. Also, we are really going to make a push for vanderdoes. This isnt me saying we get him just that we are going to definitely put in an effort.

Yeah, I've been assuming that Monte Kiffin is gone. Didn't at first occur to me that that would affect Orgeron, but of course that makes sense.

I suppose that commentary on whether places like LSU are ever "full" is laughable, but in any rational world they would be "full" as far as D-Line is concerned, already. They have three DE verbals, and three DT verbals in hand.

The DTs are Christian LaCouture 6'5", 267/ Greg Gilmore 6'4", 285/ and Tevin Lawson 6'4", 275.

They appear to still be recruiting FIVE others: Rod Crayton 6'1", 290/ Deadrin Senat 6'1", 311/ Marquedius Bain 6'3", 308/ Jaynard Bostick 6'4", 291/ and Justin Manning 6'2", 275.

Who knows how many DEs they are still recruiting, but one, Tim Williams, is elite.

With three DTs already verbaled and three more DEs to make six out of 25 total verbals aimed at the D-Line, one wonders what the heck Miles is doing? I supposer that I shouldn't sweat it much, as Miles has no real rules to play by.

Wow, that makes me feel much better about our chances of getting a visit. Thanks for looking that up, OMM!

Look at that list of D-lineman OMM pointed out for LSU. That's what I want ND to do. They go hard after the D-line.

Between graduation and Jr's going pro LSU is losing like 6 Dlinemen. LSU is not favored for most of the Dlinemen they are still recruiting on Old man's list.

So, USC has

2 OL for 2013
3 OL for 2012
6 OL in 2011 (including three 3* and a 2*)

versus

7 DL in 2011 (3 of them DTs)
3 DE in 2012
4 DL in 2013 (2 of them DT)

I suspect the 2011/2012 classes of DL might want to worry about being switched over to OL out of pure necessity.

Even money says 2 of the 6 probably won't ever suit up for LSU..........I don't know these guys at all but I'd be willing to bet they chase so many b/c a few each year don't make the grades.
