Why are all ND grads immune from criticism?
Why are recruits immune from criticism?
I love the PC BS with the whole Golson situation. The family member died before December 18. FSU plays their game on January 1.
My grandparents are dead and my parents are dead. It happens to everyone. I took the time off to mourn them, remember them, and bury them, before honoring them by going back to work. Brett Favre played the game of his life the day after his Dad died. How many athletes have you heard about who play within a week of a loved one's death because that's what the deceased would've wanted? All of them? And this will be TWO weeks after the death.
There is no doubt that EG has a personal issue right now. He just quit on his second group of teammates in eight months. Is it more classy to do that than it is to expect more from a former ND representative and state as much on a message board? Give me a break. If you believe he is still grieving for his grandmother and THAT is the sole reason for him missing the game, I have a bridge over the Pacific Ocean in South Bend to sell you."
A buddy of mine who I met in L.A. when his son played for Loyola HS with Anthony Barr said it best (keep in mind he walked on at ND and played on the '77 championship team with Joe Montana):
Amen Paul.
Good on him getting the degree, but always struck me as mentally weak, so I agree with LA.
What we are dealing with, is a "me" mentality.
Had he put aside the "me" mentality and let Kelly coach him, I think he could have been Tony Rice v. 2.0.
Instead, this is what we have.
After bailing out, as aforementioned, on his 2nd team.
"me."
I wish him good luck as well. I don't think he quit on the Irish, he had dreams of playing at the next level, and splitting snaps with a qb in his last year wasn't going to help his draft stock, yeah it didn't work out for him at fsu either, but I don't fault him for making that decision.
also do we know for sure it was the death in the family that is the reason? or is that speculation?
And if he had "me" mentality why would he work his tail off to comeback to ND after the first suspension?
I hope everything is alright with him and I hope he finds his way. Good luck EG.
"Me" is why he was suspended in the first place. It's also why his team had to play without the guy that got all the QB1 reps. It's why the team didn't have the QB that went 12-1 the year prior. And that time off due to "me," I think is when "me" developed. Documented ESPN pieces about Notre Dame's suspended savior working with QB whisperers so he could go back to ND even when other programs reached out to him. (Like FSU for example.)
He is a ND grad. He's gonna make great money because of it.
But that doesn't exclude him from criticism in my mind.
Manti also played a hell of a game against Michigan in 2012, the week after his grandmother died.

Didn't Robert Hughes play right after his brother was murdered? Can't remember the year, but it was under Weis.
Eighty percent of success is showing up.

Smith representing Donovan McNabb back in the day
McDonald's application.
What is the purpose in this statement? Do you believe it contains comedic value? Is it making fun of our former player? Or the value of his ND degree?
Wish him the best of luck. No reason to take shots at a KID.
I actually know someone that started at McDonald's when they were young. They still work there. It's been a very financially rewarding choice.McDonald's application.
Tough crowd.
While I don't know the mental mindset of EG or the personal things he is dealing with, I wish him well and hope that he - and ND fans - will remember his time in SB and his contributions to the program. He was a huge reason for 2012. Sadly it didn't go as planned after that point. Hoping he gets back on track and becomes successful in life... football or no football.
edit: I am not stating that I think his time spent at ND shouldn't be discussed or debated. Just that I try to remember more of the good in players than the bad.
You think everyone is emotional now, wait till the off season shit happens. It's not even officially the off season and everyone is wearing their emotions on their sleeves all ready. Come on people stay tough and laugh a little we have a long way to go before next season.
