To be fair, you guys could be correct in that he is worried about the end around/reverse.

Usually though, you are gonna close down w/ that down block and read react from there. If that means keeping outside contain on the reverse then that is not a very sound defensive scheme, and easily to expose....which it obviously was. Your D-End reading a power coming at him should take priority over an end around.

Could be coaching, but either way it's wrong.

(I played DE for part of my time in College, and Coached in College, not trying to sound cool...just some background.)

I was a team player there, but at the same time, I was really all about me in a way. "When it came to football, I wanted to make plays. Now, sitting out a year, being around the players, I've become more of a team player, and it's made me want to do more for my teammates and not just for myself.

A growth moment.

On that td run he did exactly the wrong thing. When your man down blocks as a defensive end you are supposed to crash down and squeeze. The pulling offensive lineman was coming to kick him out and didn't even have to block him. If he was playing team defense he would have crashed down, blown that block up with a wrong arm and made a pile. Then the rb has to either bounce it outside where the scrapping lb should be there to make the tackle or reverse his field where the backside pursuit would get him. Again, that play is a perfect example of what not to do. Hoping Aaron gets it together and still makes something of his career. Glad to see his eyes are opening!

And as the poster above stated when your man down blocks your eyes go inside, and you look first for a pulling guard and then to the fullback for an oncoming lockout block. The outside backer has contain in that situation. (I played college football and was a four year starter at de, albeit it at a DIII school)

I would rather lose to Alabama all day, as opposed to McNeese St. At least he seems to be maturing.

At 1:09 they drop him into coverage and the play dropped off in front of him. You can tell he doesn't look comfortable in space. Bad angle to the ball carrier and backs off when he could have wrapped him up.
The play at 2:34 the play after the fumble it looked to me like he only had eyes for the QB. You can see his head whip around right after the score.
At 5:10 he diagnoses the play correctly and trips up the RB so the defense can make the stop.
At 6:06 he had the play blown up and just didn't wrap up. Interestingly enough that's the only play I saw really run to his side every thing else seemed to be more up the middle or a jail break screen to negate his speed.
A year off not getting reps and he's probably the best player on that defense right now. Not exactly a recipe for success.
Vs that level of competition I would expect him to more dominant if he hadn't sat out a year so we'll see how he progresses as the season goes along.
Still would love to see him in ND's uniform though.

sure coulda used him tonight... smh

Yes, his 5 tackles for the season including his 2 assists against MSU and the 3 against Div 1aa McNeese St would have really been a difference maker.

His disciplined style of play and complete lack of overpursuit would undoubtedly have held Gardner to minus yardage.

Thank you. I really have no idea how people are seeing the DL as the problem.

You're welcome.

The DL misses KLM and I didn't see a single post mentioning him tonight.

Boom, you have got it. We aren't the same team/defense we were a year ago.

Just enough pieces missing this year to be what we saw on the field last night. Diaco has his hands full and I hope we can get guys like Redfield and Luke meaningful minutes this season b/c they are our future.

This guy knows what he is talking about. Nothing against Day, he will get their.

As far as Lynch, I'm one of the few that still has a thing for him. But he would've made this D worse. No discipline. Our D line is the only solid part of our D.

He was not a sure first rounder after 2011. He was a projected first rounder coming into 2013. At this rate he just may play his way into having to stay for his senior, but he'll get drafted regardless. Too talented not to, and NFL guys love a talented project they can fix.

Every draft prediction I saw before the season had him first round... One had him second overall before Tuitt and Nix... Seriously... He will be fine.

Seriously, his performance thus far is not first round quality. Every draft prediction assumed a monster year this year. Not saying he won't have one, but thus far, less than special. 3 tackles in the first game, 2 assists in the second. He's lost muscle and strength, and looks chubby. At USF, he should be the absolute monster of the team. And he's not.

IMO, this kid is out of shape, chubby, doesn't really care, and is listening to all the knuckleheads saying he's great and not to worry. Very sad to me. I'm thinking 3rd round or doesn't go pro this year.

What talent? I saw it in 2011, but its gone bro. It is gone.

Yes, based on his performance in the 2011 season, he was a sure 1st rounder, which is why every draft prediction had him in the 1st round coming into this season. Not sure how it doesnt add up for some.
