No one's saying anything to Joe. We're just a bunch of overly-obsessed dudes flapping our gums about what we see on TV. That's part of the fun of sports as entertainment ("armchair quarterbacking ") and there's nothing wrong with it. Now, if someone were berating the student athlete to his face, that'd be different and crossing a line. We're not doing that. We're just bitching about a player in the abstract on a football board because from our limited perspective, he's playing poorly. While it's true that the coaches get paid to make those decisions, our opinion matters precisely dick all to those decisions, so our criticism exists entirely in its own masturbatory echo chamber, as harmless as any other meaningless sports banter. Nor does this mean we don't support Joe or the team. I think everyone would be jazzed to see Joe channel Manti. We all want the team to play their best and criticizing poor play in a harmless forum is both a valid and trivial means of expressing that.

You certainly make a good case, and have presented your point well!

Are you certain that the players don't check their threads here? Because I think at least two do on a semi-regular basis. Even if they don't -

And while we are at it for a little clarification, it is okay to put a player down, as long as you do it behind his back? And not to his face?

And I agree with you about the gum-flapping part in principle, and in most instances as well; but, could some cases really be an issue of a more serious behavioral pathology?

I mean this sport has no shortage among its fandom of frustrated washed up failures, that throw everything into creating a persona who is actually not a failure at that which they love so much. We see it all the time, everyone is appalled every time a story surfaces about a parent that takes it too far with their own child. We all love to hate the obsessed, win at all cost coaches, that bend or break rules to their own liking. Everybody still loves to hate Bobby De Niro, and that was what (?), over twenty years ago?

I like Joe Schmidt. We all saw what happened to the defense last year when he got hurt. But I've also seen Nyles Morgan and Tevon Coney play a little football and they do not appear to suck. We could at least mix them in there more.

The bashing, at least to me, seems to be all over the board and it gets old. I understand as fans we are allowed to gripe and moan. In this instance, I feel this horse has been beaten to a bloody pulp. Much like everyone gets to say something, I get the opportunity too. I am serious.

Thank you, both! (What do you think the over/under is on for days after the season ends before it is announced that Joe will become a member of the Irish staff?)

I was actually in this boat earlier in the season, but after the last few weeks I find myself watching him closely and yelling at my tv about how slow and rotten he is.

Edit: with the speed USC has, I am literally terrified having Schmidt at mlb this week. They will run circles around him. If you think he looked slow vs Navy....

BTW, I just realized it was Morgan who forced that 2nd half kickoff fumble against Navy. Dude is hungry ;)

Earlier a the conversation included a number of posts related to JS's ability to "run" the defense and line the players up.

I got to thinking and did a little digging. I think what Joe does for the defense is a lot more than line it up. I think the coach, may have been Kelly, may have been BVG, that stated having Schmidt in the game is like having a coach on the field.

It didn't occur to me that this was a literal statement. Seriously. I think the staff almost holds him as an equal. And it just so happens this week gives an example of why. Listen to Jack Swarbrick's story of halftime at the Navy game : (sorry but it is a little ways in.)

I really believe Joe is going to move right from playing for the Irish to coaching the Irish!

We saw the same thing in the latest Showtime episode. Joe was on the phone with the coaches in the booth trying to clarify who messed up a certain play and he said on the phone "okay so who do I need to go coach?"

I haven't kept up on the episodes, maybe I will get a chance this weekend, but it is exactly consistent with what I surmise. BVG lays it out. Massive flow. Some don't get it. They observe from high. If Joe already isn't aware, they point him to where he needs to 'splain next.

Parse out any hyperbole, but I think Joe thinks just like the coaches, sees what they see, just about as fast, and can cut it up and explain it to anyone in the game effectively, on the fly. You just don't see that. I am beginning to believe he is the football equivalent of a Mozart.

funny thing is if I was a top player on this ND team and Joe was trying to "coach" me on the sideline I feel like I'd be kinda salty considering Joe needs to look after his own game first..

Joe is the first to admit that he doesn't have the physical tools that the other players have. I think that creates respect between him and the other guys on defense. I think the only players who might be salty are the ones behind him on the depth chart. The guys out on the field with him should (and do, I hope) embrace it.

All this is well and good but his actually play is at the MAC level.
The theory is that he makes everyone else better. A less-than-elite Joe make Jaylon more elite, helps Tillery develop, allows Sheldon Day to make plays without worrying about being a field general, etc.

Not sure how Jaylon having to be superman on every play to cover Joe's lack of speed is a bonus for this defense though. I was all for Joe last year when he was healthy and making plays buts it obvious he lost a step after he got hurt and isn't the same player this year.

Believe me, I'm never the guy to say "we can't criticize the coaches because they know better than us," but in this case I think it might be legit. We just assume that Morgan or whoever else would be better than Joe but Morgan could be total garbage and we have no idea. We also have no measure of how Joe influences the rest of the defense's play.

we have seen though how much players can get better provided they have on-field reps. Is Kizer the same player now that he was in August? Most definitely not, the thing about Nyles and Coney is that its not a question of how are they now, it's how they could be if given genuine opportunities

this is why i brought up the point earlier. Is the reason Joe is still playing every snap because he is only one mentally preparing to play every snap? While maybe the coaching staff can get equal play from Morgan, are they going to get equal mental snaps from Morgan?

funny thing is if I was a top player on this ND team and Joe was trying to "coach" me on the sideline I feel like I'd be kinda salty considering Joe needs to look after his own game first..

Then there is also this factor. It may or may not be the popular opinion here about Joe but doesn't come off as the easiest to get along with. Now, I am not saying he isn't respected and liked.

I have been around my fair share of football players and I have never heard someone ask the coach if they were "not wrong" on a play. Came of as an odd way of asking what happened on a play, but maybe it just came off weird to me.

Anyways, not trying to jump on Joe and beat a dead horse. Ultimately, I think Joe deserves to play for whatever the reason is or else he wouldn't be in there, and I hope he and the D give us a game for the ages similar to below:

If Joe is the only one mental prepared to play every snap, and we really need a 'coach on the field' every play, our entire staff should be fired. That's simply unacceptable and inexcusable. This isn't year 1.

Do anyone know if ND D runs a 1 or 2 gap scheme?

Joe Schmidt isn't the only player to be on the field for his leadership and ability to make people around him better. Think late-career Ray Lewis. He was a step or two slower than he was in his prime but he was still the leader of a dominant Ravens defense.

That has nothing to do with my post. There is a massive gap between having someone on the field that makes others better, and needing someone on the field to coach the defense every play and that person being the only one mentally prepped for every play.

Did anyone catch the presser last night when BK was asked his thoughts on Grace and how well he was playing? BK responded with he knew how good Grace was/could be, but finally BVG is seeing it as he hasn't seen it in a game yet. Leads me to believe we'll be seeing much more Grace now, but it blows my mind that BVG is relying so heavy in his comfort with certain players instead of going with the possibly more talented one. That was my take, anyway, and probably pretty similar to what is going on with Schmidt.

I have to believe that if Morgan had a form grasp on the defense, ability to recognize and make adjustments, then he would be on the field now and not Joe. We saw some pretty good play out of Morgan last year, but for every good one, he had a stinker. My guess is the staff feels having Joe with his knowledge and his limited athleticism is less of a risk then having Morgan's athleticism and lack of knowledge on the field.

The counter-argument being that if the defense is too complicated for anyone other than your smartest player to understand, then it's too complicated, period.

BVG has to allow Grace/Martini/Morgan a chance to play and it's as simple as that. Joe's gotten every opportunity and not showed that he deserves it. IF he's the best we've got, so be it, but after week in and week out of getting beaten, the other players deserve a shot to prove they can/cannot do better.

Joe's ability to dissect and react to plays quickly does him no good if his limited athletic ability (further hampered by injury) doesn't allow him to make the play. He doesn't have the athleticism to make up for what he's lost from his nagging injuries.

I did and most interesting part was that they graded him out at 17 of 18 progression points. I'd be interested to know what all goes into that but it sounds like they were very impressed.

So it's a 50/50 shot with Morgan last year. Who now has a full calendar year more in the system than he did at that point. It's the coaching staff's job to have him ready. They should've.
The counter-argument being that if the defense is too complicated for anyone other than your smartest player to understand, then it's too complicated, period.
Or that if Morgan was 50/50 a year ago, how is that worse than Joe at well below that. It doesn't matter how smart you are if you jut can't get here you need to be when you need to be there.
For me in guess it boils down to if you'd rather have a guy who gets where he needs to be and makes the play half the time, but is learning as he goes, or a guy who knows what's going on but watches it happen as he's trying, but more than often failing, to get where he needs to be and make the play.

Schmidt was a radio guest on Jim Rome today. Not Jaylon Smith, Fuller, Kizer, Shumate, or Prosise. Joe Schmidt.
