I’d love to hear from the Xs & Os guys on here as I’m no QB expert. Is Carr taking all the “pre-snap reads” stuff too far and it’s becoming more of a hindrance? in 4th quarter, Denbrock called for “hurry up offense” and they had BYU out of position. Unfortunately, Carr slowed everything down w/ changes at the LOS giving BYU plenty of time to get set. Did I misinterpret that in real time or could Carr have had a big gainer had he got something off quick while BYU was trying to set their D?
I think CJ is making the right checks based on what he’s seeing presnap, but he’s not checking into the right plays and/or what he’s checking into isn’t ideal based on the personnel grouping on the field.

Reports during the QB battle seemed to indicate CJ would preform worse when the pressure was on, his career as a starter has shown the same.

Guy is supposed to he a Heisman candidate top 10 contender, missed 2 open receivers in the end zone, fumbled in the red zone, couldn’t capitalize off of back to back miffed punt/turnover on downs in deep BYU territory, made bad decisions all night and lost his coaches trust when the game was on the line.

Ian Book, Jack Coan and Riley Leonard all win that game

The staff didn’t do
CJ any favors not going out and getting a stud WR. They whiffed big time. Zero excuses that is priority one. Faison and Greathouse probally both gone after this year

This... for a team that had no playoff or bowl game distractions, we appeared very unprepared for how the NIL process and bidding works. The stuff assumed they had stars (like Marsh) locked up but when the horse gates opened and the horses started running, we quickly lost the race. Cignetti and staff--with a number of big playoff games ahead of him--executed much better and had the math and strategy in place ready to go when the gates opened... Because they needed to with no time to fuck around. Cignetti was like "shit or get off the pot, we're not fucking around. We patted ourselves on the back that we had to go to with talented but more unproven players (like Graham and Porter) but that we had gotten some diamonds in the rough (at least on O) but they haven't panned out.

This isn’t trying to give CJ an excuse. But do deep balls have their ball flight/distance change at all, at high altitude ? Anybody with experience throwing at altitude? He was just a tad off on a couple important throws.

While I think this was the worst game Carr has played... Leonard lost to Northern Illinois, and looked dreadful while doing so.

You really gotta accept that college players are not machines.

Agree... but at least when RL has an off day throwing he still has an attribute to save the day.

Carr is more than capable of helping us when needed with his feet. Him and/or the coaching staff need to remove the bubble wrap and let him be a football player.

Carr needs to street ball some. Johnny manziel style. No one can convince me it's not Freeman overruling Denbrock and Carr. Let the handcuffs off

Good, ask him about it after the Navy game too. Keep him pissed

He could have blamed the BYU lineman that mimicked his cadence and caused the fumble, but he didn't. I hope he uses this game as fuel for the rest of the season. We didn't play well enough to leave no doubt, and as a result it opened up the opportunity for the refs to fuck us in some pretty pivotal moments.

Jamie U from ISD had made the point at the end of last year that one of the overlooked drawbacks of no playoffs (aside from obvious, of course) is that CJ didn't get more opportunities to learn how to play under bright lights and pressure. He cited the USC game as prime example of him not playing well - as well know.

This was the first big game since then and he hasn't learned how to be better in real pressure situations. That thought had been gnawing away at me for months and I was hoping he was wrong but CJ definitely has some growing to do between now and November 7 if the team is going to achieve what it wants this year.

I'm no QB expert but I'm not so sure. I still maintain that CJ does not strike me to be a QB type like Arch, Buchner, or yes, I would even say Ian Book, where they collapse and run a lot with the pressure.

CJ is composed back there and eludes fairly well while keeping the eyes down, BUT, like RL, but in a different way, seems to have confidence issue where he's just not throwing a nice, accurate pass and connecting cleanly with his receivers, or even throwing the right 50/50 pass (again, when you look at a good 4-5 missed throws - at least - last night slowed down, you can see the ball hitting the receivers hands but they're not catching it).

Hopefully, just like RL, as the season wore on in '24, and he developed a lot more confidence, CJ will too. Maybe that's one of the issues, other than his first two games, CJ hasn't had enough challenging games with good secondary coverages by the opposing Ds.

And yes, I say draw up more QB keeper runs for CJ.

No. I live at 5518 feet above sea level: things with high velocity that go high in the air (e.g. baseballs struck by a bat, golf balls, kicked footballs) carry further. Footballs and baseballs that are thrown don’t magically go further or float like there’s no gravity;
basketball players come here and make the same percentage of shots that they do at home or anywhere else.

Top 5 QB wins that game by two TDs. Seven possessions in the second half totaling 10 points, 3 of which came on a 3 yard three and out "drive". Four of seven possessions had 4 or fewer plays. 6-9 plays on the 68 yard TD drive were runs. 7 of 15 on the final drive that required two 4th down conversions and a 3rd and 10 conversion. Had about 20 plays available for a Heisman moment when the rest of CFB is opening the door and couldn't check into a play to steal the day for the good guys.

Obviously not his best day, but it was way better than his worst days last year.

A big difference this year is that since he bulked up he seems way more capable of escaping tacklers. Last year if anyone got a hand on him you could chalk it up as a sack.

Overall I'd give his grade a C-, which is only even that high with some clutch throws towards the end but it just wasn't enough.

I think the uproar around Carr is probably too much, I would still absolutely take him over Minchey and think he's one of the 5ish best QBs in the country. But he sure as hell does not look like a guy who's ready to be the 1st overall pick QB. At least not for another year.
Minchey is at best a game manager with a great D and running game. Minchey has less yards rushing this year than Carr and accounted for around 100 yards of offense in their loss to Bama. Would prefer an art return than get Minchey back.

What the hell is an "art return"?

One correction. We had 14 points in the second half.

I agree with everything you are saying though. 7 Drives and NO TURNOVERS, 14 points is absolutely terrible. If you tell me we have 7 drives in the second half and no turnovers, I think we win by 7-10. We're averaging almost 4 points a drive this season. A game like this you wouldn't be shocked if it dropped down to 3. So 11 possessions, 33 points, we scored 24. Both end of half drives, despite not playing well killed ND. That's the 10 points we needed there to be an an ok 3 points per possession.

ND went up 10-7, our next 4 offensive possessions resulted in zero points. You come out of half time needing a spark from the offense and it goes 4 and out, then 3 and out.

Bottom line, Carr didn't get a single rushing or passing TD in a big game where he threw it 49 times. That's absolutely insane, never saw that coming. If you tell me he's throwing it 49 times before the game, I actually would think BYU loaded the box, and denbrock finally lets Carr eat, and he has 400yds passing, 4 tds, and is squarely in the Heisman race.

FML... open your eyes Carr

Carr has no intention of giving any other receiver a chance. Left side goal line our guy breaks wide open. Faison is also open in the flat. All night Carr would lock onto someone who was not open and often throwing right into double coverage. Hope he learns from this because he was a stupid QB this game when he is supposed to be a field general à la Tommy Rees but with all the tools. He just flat out blew it. He has time to get his head out of his ass and look good against Navy. He will need to be on against Miami to keep up with Miami.
