Now, I say that and went back and looked, and they were averaging 3 OL yds/carry.

Something is wrong with some of the usual stats feeds, tho. Can't get good advanced stats on AW.

1. Still not sold on either RB being number 1.
2. Will Black had a rough night he better get it together before BYU.
3. They need to tailor the offense to about 65-35 let CJ throw it more.
4. Why didn’t we bring pressure in the begging of the game?
5. The absence of Greathouse is concerning, is it more Greathouse or more CJ trying to force it to 1-2 guys? I saw multiple tweets that Greathouse was open on plays.
6. They better not sleep on Purdue their QB can sling it take the over next week

If we are truly going to compete for a title this year we need to roll with our best skill position players. A few thoughts below:

1) Start James asap. Much better rusher than Aneyas. Aneyas would be better in passing downs for blocking, short yardage, and receiving.
More Walton/Young also.
2) Alarming that Greathouse had 0 catches and was not targeted. Honestly think he has separation issues. Roll with Faison, Gilbert, and Graham. Need to look at some of the younger wrs now: Frazier, Fitz, Burress, etc. We need guys that consistently get open.
3) 0 catches for tight ends. Unbelievable and unacceptable. Flanagan/Flanigan aren't getting separation either. Premer needs a real look in passing downs.

These changes ND Nation would enhance the offense. Going to and winning the title could literally come down to 1 play. Need our best guys in there. This team is loaded.

His high school tape is some of the best I've ever seen. Just don't think Flanigan/Flanagan have enough juice. Premer needs a real chance. 3 games is enough of a sample to start looking at other dudes and makes the tough choices. BYU/Miami are looming.

Williams TD celebration: I think he was going to act like he was cutting down the linemen with a chainsaw. They would have all fallen down like felled trees. Freeman was probably pissed knowing that if Jagusah was out there and the celebration was completed, he probably would have torn his ACL.

Is it fair to wonder if teams are thinking of the recent history of Notre Dame and therefore focusing on shutting down the running game and dogging the TEs because they are not going to respect the receivers until they prove something?

I have no idea why we aren't just going 4 wide and chucking it all over the yard as the "standard." We finished the game with 36 RB runs to 24 pass attempts and I just don't know why that's the offense. Probably could create more explosive runs by going throw-throw-throw-RUN into a light box and maybe you make one guy miss.

I think Freeman has a say in this. He demands a run first team.

Look at Denbrook's history, he's fine never running the ball.

This may've been mentioned after you posted like my previous reply, but I'm too lazy to read the entire thread.

One problem I've noticed with the running game is it's too congested. Even the receivers are bunched up most of the time. That's great when Love and Price can beat everyone to the edge and gash them, but these plodders we have running the ball now need better spacing to get the straight ahead gains of 5-7 yards.

In general, they just do not throw to the middle of the field. Thats why TE/slot are so underutilized. If you look at a pass chart, ND very rarely targets that area except for RB checkdowns.

Somewhat yes. Carr isn't super mobile but has solid pocket movement. Bringing up a lot of defenders helps stop our rushing game (which isn't good so far this year- truth hurts) and can add more pressure to Carr. Starting James will help more with this as he's quicker than Aneyas and has a more sudden initial step.

Some people need to realize

Carr can skin a cat multiple ways with this offense. He's a surgeon. He's going to take what the defense is going to give him and he's not going to be getting every WR and TE an equal 4 catches each or some shit.

The hyper analyzing of passing targets is going to get old. He clearly established an exciting "new target" with Gilbert and people are still going to bring up Greathouse and Graham lol

Thinking about Carr last year how in the first 2 games too often he checked out of runs into screens to take what the defense was giving them, rather than dictate the game plan and give the ball to the best player on the field in Jeremiyah Love.

I think he needs to do the opposite this year. I’m not saying he should stop checking into runs, not even frequently, but he’s the best player this year. Stop taking it out of his hands.

Exactly. Look at that LSU offense with Jayden Daniels when Denbrock was the OC. Now, half of the plays they ran that season were running plays, but only 50% of the running plays called were to their RBs. Denbrock was not afraid to pass. He'd let Daniels rip it.

Compare that to when Riley Leonard was our QB. In the entire season alone, we passed 43% of the time. Now, obviously Leonard was no where near close to as good a passer as Daniels, but the point is that Denbrock can let his QB sling it and not just call RB plays.

My biggest takeaway is that it was the first MSU game in a decade, on the 20th anniversary of the 2006 game (except we are the home team with a lead in the pouring rain), against Pat Fitzgerald looking for an early signature win, with Freeman needing a double digit victory to break a record held by Rockne, and with the local beat discussing what backup QB reps we'll see.

Sure MSU sucks but I've watched cfb long enough to know that juju matters and that was a shit ton of juju begging for an upset. We won by 17 and my pulse didn't raise above the norm in the entire second half.

I also do wonder if we're running the ball more just to try and fix it, al la practice reps (like it was mentioned earlier) against these "weaker opponents" before we face tougher ones like BYU, and especially Miami. I think then the offense will be opened up more and Carr will have the leash taken off.

This will forever be known as the Micah Gilbert game. That was an elite, breakout performance and that second long catch was the best of the night.

I think I’m ready to put Aneyas on the shelf. He just looks slow. I thought Nolan James had a nice game. Get Walton ready for RB2.

The defense played great pretty much the entire night. But whatever they were doing in the second half, more of that please.

Give it up for Pat Fitzgerald. The guy can coach and bring gravitas to the locker room, kind of like Freeman. MSU is going to be tough in the future.

Wasn’t to excited about the open receivers, but the defense was the nasty defense we love. AW is going to get regulated to RB2.
