Freeman basically told us in that interview that the three guys we return at RB have already shown him and the staff that they are really good football players. ... and that particularly applies to Aneyas.

Also, briefly on his OLine remarks: I saw no indication of any nervousness about what he/we have. He talked about lots of returning production. Other than leaving Craig at center, he talked about the versatility of all the guys to shift around. He didn't mention Jagusah, and shouldn't yet -- he was talking about experimentations during the spring. He mentioned Knapp and Lambert, AND he mentioned Abshur -- we should not write Sullivan off as a potential starter. As I watched his face during the OLine remarks, I saw the face of a relaxed man. (Even though he laughed with McElroy about him focussing about the OLine "just like they do in meetings", he told us WHAT they talk about then : NOT whether we have the horses, but only who the best five are, and where exactly to place them in the mighty Fist.)

Let's see how this hot take lands...gulp....

I know I shouldn't be, but I'm really high on Aneyas this year. Everyone talking about Freeman, Carr, the defense and these young WR from OSU. And I think the story at the end of the year could be how AW is a bad dude with the rock.

I love how AW runs. No one is gonna be J Love and Price, but Aneyas has never shown anything that’d make me assume he can’t be really good.

Would we be that surprised if Aneyas had more scrimmage yards this year than Love in 2025 (1652)? Thats a lot of yards but Aneyas will catch a lot of balls. I don't think its unreasonable to think he could get around 1500 yards, maybe 1000 rushing and 500 receiving.

I could see 1200ish. I think he will be under 1k rushing because of the other backs earning carries. 500 receiving may be a bit lofty because of the other weapons. Then again, my brain can't quite compute how long the season *could* be an I tent to look at stats as a 12 game thing

Is there reason to believe we’ll see a departure from Seider’s preferred 2 back system this year?

My whole thing with Seider is that at ND and Penn State he had clear top 2 studs at RB. Rotating a third would just be silly. I like our RB room but none are Love or Price. So it does open up the chance of having a deeper rotation.

I hear you, just curious if this is something that came up in any interviews

He has just spoken highly of Williams, James and Walton. Some on the beat have said good things about Young (especially IB-they must have him/family as a source). I think Osborne will get time to heal up and this may be a year we don't see much from him on the field

Williams and James are his obvious favorites, but I can’t see a world where Young isn’t at least the short yardage back.

He can then make the freshman his second “pairing” when we’re blowing teams out late.

Another way to put it is it shouldn’t be that hard for Young to get some touches with the ones.

We should be in enough blowouts for the freshman to see time in the fourth quarter.

I think he's an almost 1-for-1 comp to Kyren Williams

Yes. And someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Kyren essentially the consensus comp when Aneyas committed to ND by ISD and other recruitniks? I remember being pumped when they landed him for that very reason.

ND’s RB room is stacked, and there’s no reason to think that losing a generational talent in Love will suddenly justify everyone saying the RB room is the weak link on the team. That is asinine, imo.

With that said, I am on record casting some doubt on the offense’s overall efficiency due to the loss of Love and Price, as there were countless times when a hero-esque play by one of them bailed out what otherwise would have been a stalled drive. But that’s more a concern about offensive execution/efficiency as a whole rather than any one particular room. There's no reason to think that Carr, or a WR, or RB can't rise their level of play and provide that chain-mover mentality when their back is against a wall.

Kyren Willams was, for my money, our best RB of the last 20 years after Love. He came in talented and then played above his recruiting level and natural talent, because he was just such a dawg.

Aneyas looks to have comparable natural talent. If he's even close to Kyren level of dawg, we will be just fine. And then we've got James (former NJ high school player of the year so I'm going to bet high dawg quotient), Young and two talented freshmen, with world-class coaching.

I'm not worried about our RB room at all.

Reason why I believe they’ll play more than 2 is you want your best guys fresh all season don’t want them banged up and limping by the end of the year.

I think you meant to say "can't rise their level of play"?

Will there be a drop off from Love & Price? Sure, but it shouldn't be great and there is every expectation that Carr makes a significant step up after getting a year of game experience under his belt which should offset any drop in production. Thinking about this a little more, teams stacked the line because they feared L&P more than Carr. They know Carr is a Heisman candidate, so I would expect to see D's playing the pass more heavily.

I think the RBs are more efficient than 2026. They’re not better, but Price and Love always tried to hit home runs (appropriately).

I think we’re going to see more 5 yard gains in 2026 due to having more “normal”, low gravity RBs with a hopefully improved OL.

A former college quarterback at West Virginia, Seider coaches his position like a coordinator, asking the running backs to get closer to a quarterback’s understanding of scheme.

Now, when Williams questions Seider on a play, Seider knows where Williams is coming from. And when Seider asks Williams to correct a technique, the running back doesn’t need a translator.
Sampson article in The Athletic.
