If a country with 380 million people and our financial resources decide soccer is a top 4 sport, the entire landscape of the sport changes internationally. It already is with African teams starting to come on. If some of those players start staying home, FIFA will look very different in 10 years.

The infrastructure of our youth soccer system needs serious overhauling. There's not going to be any world domination or sharks with laser beams on their heads until that happens. Some of you with kids who play probably understand exactly what I'm saying here. @PolishDomer

Our system is expensive, results driven, pay to play chaos that's being gobbled up by private equity as their next frontier to bend something over and gently fuck it up the backside. It needs to be less expensive, focus on technical skill instead of winning and align structurally. You can't do this by hiring someone from Europe or South America who can't possibly grasp a population and structure of our size. Tim Howard, Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, etc. agree with this. They've seen it themselves and all have kids of their own now.

Let's pump the breaks a bit. All they can do is win tonight.

Capitalism drives youth sports in all sports. Programs are out to make a buck as much as they are to develop kids. Until you fix that, nothing changes…and I’m not sure how you go about that.

For sure. And to clarify I’m not saying what will happen,… in fact with or without Flo I expect a loss today, just being honest.

I’m speaking to why euro fans are crying bloody murder. They know a spark could awake a sleeping giant here, fix issues like you laid out and be very bad for them long term,… that’s why they are being so visceral and selective in their reactions. If US soccer was the complete non threat they claim it is they would shrug all this off

All true (says this dad of an high school/club soccer player). It’s a mess. And soccer will never in our lifetime overtake football or basketball in American hearts and minds.

But a deep US run in this World Cup probably is the sort of thing that could accelerate the process of the US finding/developing the 20 world-class soccer players they need to jump into the ranks of the superpowers. And so yeah of course Belgium (and all the other smaller, aging, European countries especially) is scared of that.

They'll win today. With or without Balogun.

I don't have social media so I can't see what randos from Europe are saying. I don' think the federations in Europe are worried about us. Italy, Germany, etc. have their own issues. If they're seriously afraid of us because we're winning games at home against Bosnia and Paraguay, that's actually funny.

Right. Soccer is likely at the top of the list, though.

You can't hire someone from a European country the size of Oregon to try and run this. It won't work. You can't do here what they do in England or Germany. You also can't price out talent an that's exactly what's happening.

Really isn't.. We need to build out our academies and make soccer a sport that is beyond a hobby. In the next 15-20 years I believe we will see a much improved USA soccer.
And compare today to 20 years ago,… it is doubtless we are making serious strides here

On a side note, my daughter has a softball game right during the match tonight. What’s the best way to watch the game in my phone??

All of our sports are like this and we are pretty dominant in most of them. Expensive or inexpensive, a few million more kids seriously engaged in the sport will drastically change things. Even if our system isn't as good as Europe, if our pool is millions of kids more, it will drastically effect things. God forbid soccer becomes a "cool" sport US kids what to play because they can get rich and famous. Imagine if we grabbed a few of the millions of kids desperately dreaming of the NFL or NBA that have ZERO shot because of their size or unfathomable competition for so few spots.

Yeah we don’t need soccer to be our A1A and overtake baseball, basketball, football etc to compete at the highest level, we are a big enough and diverse enough nation where all we need is for soccer to be included in those conversations. At least that’s my view.

I’m at the airport, waiting for my flight to Germany and wearing my Pulisic shirt. If we win I plan on asking every German I talk to, ā€œwhen is your next World Cup game?ā€ And acting ignorant when they tell me they’ve been eliminated. ā€œReally? I thought Germany was good at soccer?ā€

Acting ignorant with the Pulisic jersey on would be a stretch. They would know they are being trolled before the question is even out of your mouth.

The better play is to put on a different shirt and ask those two questions. Would be a thing of beauty.

My wife is German so we go over fairly frequently. I find it makes Europeans happy when you act kinda dumb as an American. I’m all for making people feel good.
