You are exactly Right. I don't think it is any easier. If anything, being a college coach right now is more difficult. It might be different for ND because you have some genuine 40 year decision type of guys, but in the NFL these guys actually have contracts. Right now on college rosters virtually everyone is year to year because of NIL and The Portal. Not to mention, the NFL works a lot like college: you're going to get another bite at the apple. John Harbaugh and Kevin Stefanski were both fired. They both landed new jobs. It's not like you get fired somewhere and your career is over. These guys always land on their feet. Matt Eberflus is probably going to coach linebackers somewhere in the NFL, if not get another DC job again.NFL pressure is better than kissing booster and university higher-up ass just to shake enough money out of the tree so you can turn around and negotiate with teenagers, their parents, handlers, and agents.
The college to NFL thing doesn't work. I like Marcus and want him to stay, but if I'm a fan of an NFL team and they hire Marcus Freeman or any other college coach, I don't know how happy I'd be about that as a fan. Buffalo is the tenth job to open, which I believe is an NFL coaching carousel record for one season. These NFL jobs are like gold to the guys who are coaching in the League and have the ambition. Even dysfunctional poverty franchises like the Browns, Raiders, Jets, Bears, etc. There are guys waiting for their shot that WANT these jobs and don't care about the history and or failings.
Everyone needs to take a deep breath every time an NFL coaching job opens. It's seriously annoying and silly. Marcus Freeman is going to fucking Buffalo or anywhere else.
