I agree with you for the most part, but if we are just being honest and playing make believe (Money and admissions no issue) we could 100% have upgraded a few places at least for one year to make a real push for a Natty. Def the whole WR room, I'd say that Hawkins (kid was a dog last year) could be better than Williams...And Damon Wilson would be an upgrade to the DL as would Mandrell Desir.

Again, just using the Brand with money and admissions being whatever.
I still think they're trying to do that. They've had misses and I'm not defending that, but it's not like ND isn't trying to upgrade some positions. They're clearly trying to land 2 Portal DTs that can start and / or play heavy rotational minutes. They're trying to add a quality DE for a 3 man rotation with Traore and Young. They're trying to add a NB if they find another one they like as much as Jontez Williams. They're trying to find a Kicker to fix the issues they had last year. They're trying to find a backup QB with experience to replace Minchey and provide some insurance for Carr...

It's not like Notre Dame isn't hosting kids, making offers and trying to upgrade their roster. They're just getting beat right now and a lot of that has to do with them losing bidding wars, or kids going elsewhere that have a guaranteed starting spot, rather than ND where they had to battle.

Josh Burnham is the perfect example. He left ND for more playing time in his final year in college in order to audition for the NFL and because Indiana could afford to pay him starting miney because They're losing their starters. Meanwhile, ND told him that he was going to be the #3 DE and be the first guy off the bench and that they couldn't pay him starter money. Had they guaranteed him the starting spot and paid him as a starter, they would have lost Bryce Young or Boubacar Traore. Take your pick of who you'd rather lose? All three guys are auditioning for the NFL and done of them were going to accept less than starter snaps.

Maybe he can commit on the spot and use all of Tennessee's NIL portal $ so they won't have enough to pay for Williams and Brewu

Kinda feels like you’re mistaking ND’s philosophy of using money with the philosophy of EVERYONE else

Tennessee has money. They weren't good this year and had some key players transfer out, opening additional funds. They're another team that unlike Notre Dame, doesn't have the benefit of returning 15 (possibly 16 starters), the majority of which will be NFL Draft picks when they leave South Bend.

Ignoring BYU, this is 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 in the 2026 team rankings

That's because most of the really, really good players (ignore the rankings) are still on the board and those schools dominate high school recruiting so they can be much more stingy in the Portal and selective in who they target. Most of those schools are looking for particular pieces to augment their rosters, other than in years where they're facing high grad / attrition rates.

Per 247Sports...

Ohio State - 22
Georgia - 10
Oregon - 14
Notre Dame - 14
BYU - 10
Miami - 8 (still in playoffs)
Oregon has lost as many players as we have, and they could still win the national championship.

More to the point, of our 14, one (Burnham), maybe two (KK Smith?), played meaningful minutes this season. Most were unlikely to ever play much for us. That's why they're leaving. To go somewhere they can. This is fine. Get worried only if/when the good players start jumping for bigger paydays. That's what happens to most teams.

Mostly players that won't play at each school, with 1-3 losses that will likely sting.

Contrary to popular belief, those programs know how to retain most of their top talent and "force out" their lesser talent.

ND is likely balancing portal needs v what they have on the roster and who they believe will elevate their game. At least that's what I'm hoping for.

Yep. That's it. And aside from DTs and a kicker, the bar is pretty high for portal guys who will elevate the roster beyond what we have in-house.

We need those too
We do, but less inclined to add another Micah Gilbert / Cam Williams level talent into that position. I'd take a clear upgrade over those guys, where that player takes a 60/40 type share of the reps, but adding another player at what I think is essentially the same talent level basically just clogs it up in my mind.

If I can't get a clear upgrade, I'd be more inclined to try and grab a Mylan Graham and 3-for-2 split the boundary / field position with Greathouse and Faison and get Greathouse 15 snaps per game in the boundary to supplement Gilbert and Williams.

I was not aware KK Smith went into the portal. That sucks.
I actually think Elijah Burress was going to pass him up pretty quickly. Doesn't have the same speed as KK, but projects to be a more complete receiver overall. If you can add a guy like Mylan Graham, he probably overtakes KK pretty quickly as well.

My thoughts exactly. Getting a talent like Mylan Graham would make Denbrock/ Brown rethink their depth chart and where guys in the room already play.

Greathouse would get snaps at boundary and Faison may slide into the slot. Denbrock's offense, for as good a it was last year, really cooks when he has a dynamic player stretching the defense at the field position.
