Is it so fucking hard for Fortuna to do his job and not constantly try to make ND look bad? On3 and FootballScoop reporting as Co-DC. Fortuna makes it seem like he left for a lateral move. Unless he’s saying the other reports are wrong, it’s just stupidity

Going to your alma mater is always respectable. I'm sure they'll be grooming him to be the next DC.

Funny he's leaving before we play MSU.

Mo Crum could be a good one. SMU LBs force a lot of turnovers.

He is a legit name compared to most of these other ones, but he also holds a Co-Dc title.

Seems like a lot of LB coaches are DC or Co-DC.

I like Manalac at Pitt. Played LB at UC, so there's that Bearcat connection again.

No. But Crum and Stockton for example are potentially overqualified for a role as just LBs coach. So getting them by using the connection could be a way to land the best possible candidate, as MSU just did.
Stockton seems like a solid choice. 4x Broyles nominee and has coached multiple positions on all three levels of defense.

Might cause some friction in that if he is successful you’d think he’d want to move up pretty quickly given he’s already held the titles of DC, Co-DC and Assistant Head Coach.

Just looking back at some guys Ash worked with to keep in mind. No idea whether these are realistic.
  • Andy Buh has followed Ash around. He was Ash's LB coach at Wisconsin and his DC at Rutgers, and he's currently on ND's staff as a senior analyst.
  • Coleman Hutzler was Ash's LB coach and co-DC in Texas in 2020. Currently a DL coach at Auburn.
  • Dave Huxtable worked with Ash at Wisconsin in 2011 when Huxtable was the LB coach. He’s now an assistant with the Atlanta Falcons working with their OLB. He looks pretty fun, and there might be some turnover in Atlanta this offseason.
  • Jay Niemann worked with Ash at Rutgers for a few years as DC/LB coach. He’s now an DL coach and recruiting coordinator at Iowa.

Stockton could be a choice if he was Co-DC at Ball State. Instead he's Co-DC at Boise State. The only logical next move is up. He's not going backwards to be a linebackers coach at ND.

I don’t believe he’s a play caller so Co-DC is mainly a monetary title. ND would likely exceed that for an established coach regardless. LBs Coach at ND is more likely to become DC at a P4 school than Boise State Co-DC

I thought the same but did a little digging and it looks like he's "only" making $285K/year. I think ND would probably triple his salary.

I do not care if it’s your Alma mater and you’re a school legend,… imagine leaving current Notre Dame for current Michigan State,… absolutely a potential career killer

I agree it's a completely misleading headline. Even if it was a "lateral" move (it's not), why would it shock anyone that he wanted to return to his alma mater? But he had to add "for the same position," anyway.

Just a disingenuous POS. Idk who hurt him when he worked here a decade-plus ago, but man, he's insufferable. Also don't know why Pete or others give him the time of day.

Isn't Boise one of worst tackling teams over the last two years? I thought I remembered that being talked about when we played them and it being a problem in the playoff last year.

When it comes to Fortuna I don’t think it’s malicious. He’s just dumb and doesn’t understand what he’s talking about.

Correct. Their style is very aggressive, blitz, stunts etc but they also get out of place a bunch because of it and whiff on stuff. Benefield the safety is considered one of their best players the last two years.

Even if that were true and he's just unknowledgeable, still don't know why Sampson or anybody else would partner up with him to discuss a topic he's clueless on.

Does coming to ND to be LB coach benefit Crum or Stockton's career trajectory is the question. Are their ambitions more than just coming back to ND to coach?

It all seems like win win for ND and for us as fans, but I'm curious to see what kind of reach Freeman has here. Does it extend further than Buh and a couple of former ND players.
